Guide was weak, unintentionally hilarious
Jan 2020 • Friends
Guide spoke in spanish, catalan and english but didnt seem to know any of them. It seemed like she was trying to translate as she went. Sounded like william shatner. Used the word “peculiar” to describe everything. Bus broke down near the destination. We had to walk the rest of the way.

Dear valeriebN4421TP, Thank you for taking the time to review our tour to Montserrat. I am concerned to know the tour did not live up to your expectations. I would like you to know our guides are officially accredited in the language they conduct the tour, reason why I am surprise to read your comments. Regarding the bus situation, unfortunately, although our fleet of vehicles is checked frequently, breakdowns may occasionally occur. I regret you experience that situation. I hope you had a nice time in Barcelona! Sincerely, Alex B.

Great guided tour!
I had signed up for a half day tour to Montserrat in the afternoon. Overall experience was good. Check in was easy. I took the voucher to their office and they handed me an audio guide and ticket. Our guide Aaron picked us up exactly on time and took us to the coach. As we started the ride, he shared some fantastic information of the different neighbourhoods along the way. We took the zipper train(or cog wheel) to the Monastery. After we got there, Aaron took us on an orientation tour for about 30 mins sharing the background & history. We then had approximately an hour 15 mins of free time and Aaron shared several ideas on how to best spend it. I was lucky to see the Black Madonna up and close (took 40 mins in queue though), quickly hiked half way upto to St. Miguel for some breathtaking views and then tried local liquors brewed by the monks. The ride back was easy and again Aaron shared some tips on things to do after the tour. I definitely recommend this option if you have just a morning / afternoon free. If you have more time, perhaps go for the full day tour. I certainly wish we had a little more free time to complete my hike or check out the other hike route. There is certainly a lot more to check out, explore and soak it all in.

Gemma our tour guide was brilliant
Dec 2019
We took the half day tour which began at 3pm. The 1 hour coach journey up was very comfortable and we got a good view as we went further up the mountain.

This place is definitely not one to miss. It has breathtaking views, calm and enjoyable. We visited at a time where there was absolutely no queues due to the time of year and the day (December ...Thursday).

We were told that Sunday it gets very busty with the locals who travel up to pray in the church where the black madonna is.

Gemma our tour guide was unbelievably knowledgeable and was ever so helpful in physically guiding a disabled couple who were part of our group.

Everything was on time and we also got the chance to take pictures and explore on our own before heading back home.

Charge more than advertised rate, and just barely meet expectations
Nov 2019
I was in Barcelona with friends for the week of Thanksgiving. During this week, we went on three tours, one of them was a morning trip to Montserrat with Julia travel on Wednesday, Nov 25, 2019. We booked this trip through a hotel concierge, who advised us that Julia Travel runs a promo with a price of 39 euros instead of the regular 55. My friend Mark paid for all six of us. Next day, when we arrived for the tour, we discovered two things: first, even though Mark signed credit card slip for 39 euros per person, Julia Travel (who got his credit card information through the hotel concierge booking system) charged us 55 euros per person. Secondly, we found that the rate for that day advertised by Julia Travel through their web site was 50% discounted to 27.50 euros per person. When Mark showed the charge on the screen on his phone to the Julia Travel employee, he stated that "the price is 55 euros!" - which was a lie which could be proven on the spot, by showing them their own web site. We did not have time to argue and went through the concierge after the tour - who eventually was able to get Julia Travel to refund the fraudulent overcharge, but was unable to make them match their own advertised rate of 27.50. Clearly, Julia travel lacks customer service and business ethics and acts at the boundary of fraud. Just because of this, I cannot recommend them to anyone.

Finding their office is easy, it is within 2-3 minutes of walk from Pl. Catalunya where they have a large office. Buses depart from an adjacent street. Bus was clean, departure was on time, trip was uneventful. The tour guide was a little difficult to understand because of the accent, but within the acceptable limits. She talked a lot about the area which we were passing on the way there, about the river which we were following and why it is red, about football training facilities, and a little bit about the monastery itself. I must say, though, that I did not learn from her presentation anything beyond what I already knew from 8 to 10 pages in Rick Steves' "Barcelona" book. Upon arrival, we got radio receivers with headphones and walked from the parking lot to the monastery. The tour guide gave us a brief introduction to the monastery, handed over the tickets to audio-visual presentation, gave us maps, made some suggestions, told us when to be at the parking lot, and left us to do what we liked to do. The time available was a little short, and, as we learned through our experience, the guidance of the tour guide was misleading. First, she recommended that we go to the audio-visual presentation (to which we got tickets). The presentation was so useless and disappointing that walked out before it ended - after wasting up to half an hour of our precious time (which was mostly waiting for English version of the presentation). Technically, nicely done, but almost zero information. Then, she suggested that we should be in the cathedral half an hour before 1 pm, when boys chorus sings. Well, maybe she has not been inside since summer, when perhaps one had to be there half an hour early, but on a mid-week November day, it was sufficient to show up 5 minutes before the concert. Because of this combined waste of time, we did not have time to go into the museum which reportedly has great collection of paintings.

In retrospective, we would be better off taking a train from Barcelona. This would cost less and would enable us to spend as much time in Montserrat as we wanted. Montserrat is surprisingly commercialized to the point that first impression is more associated with Disneyland than with a monastery, but once one finds the way into the cathedral, it is beautiful and inspiring. The views on a sunny day are gorgeous, and there are many opportunities for hikes (which we did not have time for). With a good guide, one can reportedly learn about the history of this area and significance of the monastery, but we were not blessed with a guide of this level.

The chorus sings only a couple of songs (12 mins according to Rick Steves). We were told to be at the bus stop at 1:20 pm, so we left at 1:10 pm. We do not know how much we missed, hopefully only the last song. They sing like angels, it was unforgettable memory, but leaving before it ends was a disappointment. If bus would leave 10 mins later, we would have time to enjoy the whole performance. If they let us hear part of the choir's performance, why not stay there for a little longer to let customers hear the whole thing????

We were told to be at the parking lot by 1:20 pm, the bus was supposed to leave at 1:30 pm, and left at 1:32 pm. In theory, we could come a few minutes later than 1:20, but we did not know exactly how long the walk is and did not want to take any chances of missing the bus (they did not appear to count the people on the bus, and I am not sure if they would wait for anyone). We were back to Barcelona on time. The tour was entirely in English. I do not think anyone was particularly impressed with the tour quality, as I did not see anyone giving tips to the guide or saying anything other than formal and cold "thank you" [which means nothing else than a polite "good bye, thank you for the ride"].

We took two more tours that week with a different travel agency, and it was a night and day difference.

While Julia Travel delivers the minimum that it promises, it does not go a step beyond that. Basically, it is primarily transportation with a fixed schedule and not much beyond that. And with their overcharge which is at the boundary of fraud, I cannot recommend them to anyone. Stay away as far was you can.

Dear AIPDX, Thank you for dedicating your time to write this review. Kindly take note the special Black Friday offer published on Julia Travel website was only applicable for purchases done directly at the web. The staff at Julia Travel office was not allowed to offer this price for bookings made through your hotel. It saddens me the fact that you felt misinformed since we strive to provide an outstanding service to every customer. I regret to hear the Montserrat morning tour did not live up to your expectations. Please bear in mind it is designed to provide a general view of the area major features in a half day tour. I appreciate your comments and suggestions and do not hesitate they will be taken in count for future tour options. Sincerely, Alex B

Poor communications with the city!
Nov 2019
Booked travel and arrived at 9 AM in time to depart at 9:15. Got on the bus and then they discovered that there was a marathon being run that morning around the entire city center. Bottom line: we traveled around the city center for two hours looking for a way out, didn't discover one, so finally had to cancel the tour. Hard to imagine that there is no communications between event planners of that scale and tour companies that could be impacted? Will rebook but just discouraging that we missed a day in our travel.

Just Enought Time to See the Black Madonna & Hear the Choir
Nov 2019
Montserrat is a beautiful location. Be sure to take a jacket (even if the weather in Barcelona is mild). It's about 1 hour travel each way. After an introduction by the guide, we had just enough time to see the Black Madonna and then get a seat for the boys' choir. We had to leave before the choir was finished to get back to the bus on time for its departure. Basically a quick trip to see the essentials. We'd like to return and spend more time. We had difficulty understanding the Julia tour guide... but managed well enough. We have taken Julia tours elsewhere and enjoyed them a lot.

Montserrat beautiful
Nov 2019 • Couples
Every thing was wonderful except they do not allow you enough time to listen to choir- the choir starts at 1 pm and is super crowded even in November and they want you back at Tour bus at 1:15 pm impossible to do!
Wish they allowed enough time to listen to choir
Tour supposed to leave at 9:15 but left at 10 am perhaps have it leave on time at 9 am and this problem will be solved!
Our tour guide hard to keep track of in crowds- wearing bright neon hat or jacket would make do much easier!

This tour was interesting.
Don't miss the children's choir from 1pm
If you want to reach the black Madona statue you have to stand in line - 20 - 25 minutes.
Unfortunately, it is very crowded at Monserrat.
The tour is well organized by Julia Travel.
The guide, Mrs. Cristina was extraordinary.
I hope you get on it when you take this tour.

Beautiful even with rain and fog
Oct 2019
Unfortunately, it was raining and foggy the morning we went but it was still beautiful and a great experience. If you want to see everything that Montserrat has to offer, then definitely do a full day tour. There's a lot to see and hiking involved that takes up a lot of time. With this half day tour, you only really get an hour and half to yourself. My tour guide Xavier was really funny and nice. He explained the history of the mountain, the monks and how they found the black virgin mary. At the end of this lecture in front of the basilica, I went directly to wait on line to see the Virgin. It was just a 30 minute wait and best to do right way while the line was small and the doors were closed. Once it gets closer to the viewing time and the doors open, the line gets extremely long.

The basilica is gorgeous. The mountain and views are beautiful. I would've take the train up to the top if the weather had been good but I didn't go up because I knew the fog and clouds would've prevented me from seeing anything. So I didn't waste my time. There are gift shops and tents with vendors along the side. You can get fresh honey, cheese and nuts. Our guide also went through the tables with us. I feel as if this ate up a lot of unnecessary time. We probably could've sped through a lot of this lecture and it would've allowed more free time for us.
