What to expect
Start your walking tour next to Hackescher Markt train station in East Berlin at 10am. Your guide will begin your tour by setting the scene: how did the U.S. and the USSR fall into a Cold War? How was Berlin caught in the middle of everything? How did military tensions Berlin split into two? Your guide will take you to the Berlin Wall memorial, where you’ll see a section of the Wall preserved in its original state, as well as a birds-eye view of the ‘Death Strip,’ where East Germany’s shoot-to-kill orders were carried out on would-be escapees. Next you’ll travel to the north of Berlin to Bornholmer Strasse, where the Wall came down on November 9, 1989. Here, your guide will explain the unlikely tale of how one East German politician’s mistake brought down the Berlin Wall. Continue deeper into East Berlin. You’ll see the Karl-Marx-Allee, a boulevard built as a monument to Stalin to demonstrate the new socialist utopia of the German Democratic Republic. You’ll also visit the headquarters of East Germany’s terrifying secret police, the Stasi, and learn how the East German state increasingly spied upon its own people, creating a system of complete government control over its citizens. Finish your walking tour at Alexanderplatz, the site of the iconic TV tower in the heart of the former East German capital.

East Berlin walking tour - highly recommended
Every tourist to Berlin should seriously consider doing this tour to gain some understanding of what the people of Berlin have experienced. Kyle was our fabulous guide and she shared so much historical and anecdotal information. It was 4 hours very well spent.

Fantastic tour
Jan 2020 • Couples
Really enjoyed this tour with Lyndsey. Gave us a great insight into life behind the wall and the history of how and why it went up and it’s ultimate demise in 1989. Lyndsey really brought it to life with real life stories and informative history. We visited many sights and locations we would have missed during our time in Berlin without booking on the tour. Excellent value for money - would highly recommend!

Dec 2019
Our guide Sam was excellent . He gave us very informative explanations and opinions about the history of Berlin .He had a great sense of humour as well as a serious side when explaining some of Berlins dark history. We all learned a lot and had a great time.
He stayed late, on his own time, to answer questions and help us tourists with advice on food and entertainment etc.

Berlin Cold War
Berlin Cold War walking tour organised by Cost Saver Tours. Tour director was Tammy Coetzee. This tour company really offers excellent value for money. We were guided by Wouter from Walking Tours of Berlin. He was an absolutely stunningly well versed with the history of Prussian/German evolution and the development through the centuries of Berlin through to current existence. Wouter explained Hitler's Nazi party and it's terrible reign so succinctly as to almost bring it alive in your mind's eye. Wouter was totally amazing.
He was mesmerising. He revelled in the totally amazing narration
Well done to Cost Saver Tours for contracting such a knowledgable guide.
Tammy is equally adept with her service. She will guide us through our Bohemian tour of Eastern Europe. She is very helpful, willing to assist and giving guidance with her knowledge of the Bohemian geographic region.
I am excited to experience the next 14 days.

We had an excellent guide and a very informative tour. It was a touch long for a family tour, I think that the kids are more engaged when the tour length is in the 2-3 hour range.

East Berlin tour
Oct 2019
Sarah was a guide for a small group of us doing the East Berlin tour. She is incredibly knowledgeable, amiable, and her enthusiasm for and interest in the city of Berlin and its history was infectious. The tour took us to parts of the wall that I would not have known to seek out myself, and she pointed out now unseen markers of how the city was once divided - while also giving excellent recommendations of media sources we could check out if we wanted to know more.. I would certainly take another tour with her, and with Original Berlin walks!!

Walk through history in illuminating and thought-provoking tours!
Oct 2019
Due to the very engaging delivery (and extensive knowledge) of our tour guide, Ken, we gained tremendous insight into the key factors and major players in Hitler’s rise to power, Germany’s actions in WWII, and the subsequent divided Germany/Cold War aftermath as we walked (and subway’d) around historic sites in Berlin. Our visit coincided with the 30th anniversary of the reunification of Germany, so we had the good fortunate of encountering an East Berlin gentleman (in town to film a commemorative documentary) who, with coaxing from Ken, provided a fascinating first-person account of growing up “behind the wall”. We highly recommend the “Hitler’s Germany” and “Cold War” tours offered by Original Berlin Walks. (Remember to bring your walking shoes, along with a subway “day ticket”!)

Our guide , Carolina, really knew her stuff. The tour was interesting, 3rd time in Berlin & learned loads I didn’t know. I found the story about the ghost stations fascinating, and the view over the remains of the wall really gave an insight. I thought it was well worth the money & would totally recommend this tour
