About
The Cotes du Rhone region is renowned for its top-class wines, including its robust reds, but exploring its wineries independently usually means renting a car. This small-group tour from Lyon makes it easy with comfortable transport, tastings in the Hermitage and Cote-Rotie appellations; and a guide’s insight for a more rounded perspective than if you were exploring alone. A lunch stop (own expense) and up to 12 tastings are included.

We visited the Domaine Degache Freres winery located in the Cote-Rote area. Their wines are wonderful. We then ate lunch at La Lanterne in Tain-l'Hermitage. The food is very very tasty. We finished our tasting at Ferraton Père & Fils Caveau in the Hermitage area. Their wines are also wonderful. Julie is awesome and informative. We tasted many wines of the North Rhone region. Superb tour. We would do this again...with Julie. Merci!

This was our first wine tour in the Rhône Valley and it greatly exceeded expectations as both wineries and lunch were great. Mathilde was a very knowledgeable and personable guide. The tour is a great escape from the city to discover Rhône Valley! Merci Mathilde!

A wine tour in Lyon is an absolute must! We booked with Rhone Trip for a morning visit to the vineyards. We were in an intimate group of 4 for our half day trip on Saturday morning starting at 9am. Julie collected us from Place Bellacour (very central) and we embarked on our journey to the Rhône Valley! From the outset, Julie was extremely personable and friendly and even brought us fresh local pastries for breakfast.

The Rhône district is split into the north and south. We visited two vineyards in the north which only make up 3% of the Rhône district! On the way to the vineyards, we stopped off at Côte-rôtie hill Belvedere to take in the amazing views and taste some grapes

By 10am we had arrived at our first vineyard – Les Vins De Vienne. The name comes from a Roman City and the vineyard is only around 20 years old, the owners having planted a vineyard on the site of a Roman vineyard. The company is owned by three wine connoisseurs, Yves, Francois and Pierre. They say that “Our tastes may differ but we share the same philosophy about wine and all agree when it comes to quality. We have this desire to do things well, like a musical trio where each one plays his own score whilst playing for the group”. What a lovely motto to have!

We embarked on a tour to discover how the wine was produced by the vineyard and the different methods for white and red wine! I didn’t realise that the barrels could be oak, concrete or metal. The vineyard produces around 43 different wines and exports to USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Thailand and the UK.

We sampled 6 different wines from the Croze-Hermitage, Saint Joseph, Cote-Rotie and Condrieu appellations, with one red coming from the Roman Vineyard (IGP Des Collines Rhodaniennes). Our favourite white wine was the JeanRaude from the Condrieu appellation made from 100% voignier grape. Red wine wise, we loved the Sotanum made from the Roman vineyard which is 100% syrah (as is all red wine from the Rhone valley) which was silky and smooth. Definitely the earliest I have drunk 6 glasses (small ones of course) of wine!

Around 11.30 we travelled to a smaller family run vineyard which has been operating since 1988 - Vignobles Verzier Chante-Perdrix. Situated up on the hills, it offers amazing views of Lyon! Similarly to Les Vins De Vienne, we discovered this vineyard’s process for making both its red and white wine. Our favourite white wine was the Authentic, another voignier from the Condrieu appellation which was floral and citrus-y and our favourite red wine was the Indiscrete, which was powerful and full of dark fruits.

It if wasn't for the pesky liquid allowances, we certainly would have been bringing back lots of wine from these vineyards!

Here are just a few snippets of what I learnt during my trip:

· The only grape for red wine from Northern Rhône is Syrah (Shiraz) and it is the types of soil that give the different taste to the wines

· The appellation d'origine controlee (AOC) is the French certification granted to certain French geographical indications for wines, cheeses, butters. It is not the easiest to obtain!

· For large wine makers like Guigal and Chapoutier, their names were historical and still are signposted on their land. This is no longer permitted for newer wine makers.

· The grapes are manually harvested for 2-3 weeks. Around 15-30 people assist depending on the size of the winery

· The vineyards are on the slopes to get more sun and the soil is better (granite)

I would thoroughly recommend a wine tour in Lyon with Rhone Trip! Julie was so friendly and knowledgeable, we learnt (and tasted!) a lot and the whole tour was well run and organised. Now where can we find a good voignier in London...

My husband had other plans so I decided to take this day tour and I couldn’t have been more pleased. Our tour guide Julie was lovely — she knew a lot about Cote Du Rhône wines and her English is excellent. We stopped at the top of the hills at our first stop on the Cote Rotie and enjoyed the view and seeing the workers tending the vineyards. Then we went to the Cuilleron winery and enjoyed samples of 9 wines including the only saki made in France in honor of a Japanese couple in our group. Next stop was lunch on our own in Tain-l’Hermitage. Julie was kind enough to invite me to join her at a delightful local restaurant since I was alone. Then we stopped at the Valrhona chocolate store and museum briefly to allow time to make some purchases. Next we drove to the top of the hills to hike up to the chapel that gives L’Hermitage its name. Glorious views of the vineyards and the town below. Finally we visited the Delas winery for a sample of five more excellent wines, and then returned to Lyon. It was a completely delightful day in wonderful company and can’t speak highly enough of the experience!

I took the tour alone while my husband was working. Our group was 7, me being the odd one. Henri. Our guide did a great job of making me feel included. There was one french speaking man and Henri switched back and forth so he was included as well. The stop at the vineyard hill, just to discuss planting/growing was informative. I don't know a lot about wine or the growing of the grapes so I felt I learned a lot. We stopped at two vineyards both with 5 or so tastings. The wines made from Syrah grapes were all good except one table wine. At the second stop we were walked through the vineyard and were told about all the bio efforts that they have taken. Introducing bat and chicodee homes as well as bee hives and different flowers all to help the grapes. The walk was at times diffucult (lots of rocks and steep inclines)frankly unnecessary as we could see it all from the bottom. It would have been nice at have a third vineyard for the length of the day. We stopped in Tain Hermitage for lunch. I have seen other reviews complain that a restaurant was picked. The one that was chosen was a Michelin star restaurant and the menu of the day was only 20€ for 3 courses. You could also go off on your own but hard to find one as good, the food was great.

We booked this tour because the original one we had booked was cancelled. We visited one large winery's cellar door in the morning, as well as some famous vineyards in Hermitage. We were then left with free time for lunch in the village of Tain l'Hermitage, and visited another (small) winery in the afternoon. Our guide Vladimir was friendly and quite knowledgeable. We did feel that the price of 129 Euros was a bit steep for the overall tour experience however, particularly the small winery in the afternoon.

I would highly recommend this tour. Julie was a lovely and highly knowledgeable guide. We were already fans of the Northern Rhone wines and this was a fantastic opportunity to explore the beautiful countryside in which they are made and visit the winemakers. The tastings were excellent and we learned a lot that we didn't know before, not just about wines but about the local area and its food traditions.
