Well worth the trip!
This is a new museum, only opened in 2017, and it is about as far from the traditional dusty museum as you can get.

Would recommend what was an excellent stroll with our guide who was a fount of knowledge about Kilkenny and its history over the last 800 years. Drawing attention to the still visible original architecture and medieval streets he made the past come alive. It was a very professional, enjoyable and entertaining experience.

At the time of our tour it was closer to closing time and it was just my wife, my self, and one other couple. John, our guide was amazing. The amount of knowledge dropped on us and added witty humor made the experience very memorable, which brings myself to recommend doing the guided tour over the self guided because in my opinion you miss you on lots of information only reading the plaques along the wall around the museum.

My Mama and I stumbled upon this museum while exploring Kilkenny before their Saint Patrick’s Day parade.
After venturing into Café Nero and having a delicious pastry we wandered into a mysterious courtyard behind the town hall.
Lo and behold it was an ancient Catholic Church decommissioned and converted into a magnificent little museum.
The displays were phenomenal and meticulously put together. The desk attendants Sherry (I think/hope I remember her name correctly) and John were incredibly kind and knowledgeable. They even helped me figure out why my surname (Clark) frequently has an “e” placed on the back of it in this region of Ireland.
I had a great conversation with John following our self-guided audio tour.
This museum is certainly worth seeing.
My only negative remark is that it is a tad steep on days beyond Saint Patrick’s day. 15 pounds per person for a well kept but small museum is a bit too much in my opinion.
Regardless of the pricing, I’m leaving 5 stars for the overall experience. :)

If you are visiting kilkenny for a holiday or even live there, I can't recommend this tour highly enough. I was visiting from London and with my aunts who are from kilkenny, we learnt so much about this enriched and fascinating history of the city. The tour guide John Halpin is very engaging and knowledgeable, also with a very good sense of humour. Plus really enjoyed the lego hunt in the museum, which will get the younger children interested and even us older children. The mile tour is every weekday at 11am.

What can we say about John, that hasn't already been said by others - who really should have had more respect! No! I'm only joking, John is an awesome, entertaining and very knowledgeable guide. He related well to everyone on the tour and obviously puts effort into keeping his talk up to date and relevant. Best thing I did on my day trip to Killkenny. RECOMMENDED.

My husband and I have been fortunate to travel fairly extensively, and we have been to many museums and engaged many guides. The guide here is absolutely top-shelf. He does what the best can do—engaging and educated, he imparts a wonderful big-picture perspective on what life was like then, and how much has changed (yet how much people have stayed the same). And for the rate of a museum admission it is an absolute bargain. Do yourself a favor, turn on your Google maps and find this place.

Typically, it was lashing rain as it does so often in Ireland. We wandered under what was once Kilkenny's customs House and noticed a sign, "800 years of history this way."

With that, we curiously bolted through the doorway to escape the rain, consequently finding a large church and decided to head on in with no expectations. Upon entry we were greeted by a friendly guide named John, and were subesquently blown away by the vast number of artifacts, sculptures and typographical wonders carved into all Manor of stone slabs.

As we progressed John gave us insight into the fascinating medieval world of anchorites and the "stinking rich", to name but a few topics! It's not often you meet somebody with such an infectious passion for history, I think I learned more from John than any of my history teachers in school. There are even Lego hunts to keep the kids occupied while the adult history nerds get stuck into all the museum has to offer.

Fantastic experience. What a way to spend a rainy day, we were truly grateful to John for sharing his vast knowledge. Thanks again, and we wish you all the best!

My daughter and I visited and had a great experience. It was just my 13 yo daughter and I on the tour. The museum is small but John added so many stories and seemed to pick ones that would especially appeal to a teen to keep my daughter engaged. I could’ve listened to him all day. It was a great introduction to Medieval history at the start of our Ireland trip. We both loved it!

We were lucky enough to get a guided tour with John who is the best guide I've ever been on a tour with. We plugged him with loads of questions and not only did he answer them all but his energy and enthusiasm didn't wane throughout. The building and its artefacts are top notch and give a real feel for layers of history of Kilkenny.
