Fun activity!!
Sep 2019 • Friends
Had a great time playing Hurling in Kilkenny. What a nice sport! And Andrew make it very fun and interesting! We watched a short and funny movie, walked to the pitch, got the rules and played away!! Definitely recommended!

Amazing experience - could not recommend this more!
Aug 2019
My husband and I signed up for the Hurling Experience knowing very little about what this experience would entail. After watching a short introduction video at the bar, Peter (our guide) walked us to the local GAA to teach our group the Hurling basics. Be warned: the walk is not a short one, but Peter filled the journey with fun facts about Hurling and Kilkenny. Once we got to the GAA we were taught basic Hurling skills and given the chance to participate in drills to practice them. Because our group was large enough, we also did a full scrimmage - which was INTENSE but really fun. I recommend wearing loose, breathable, work-out clothes for this experience. And get ready to sweat a little bit :-) Afterwards, we went back to Lanigans where Peter was tending bar that night and listened to some trad music with a very lively crowd. HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you are looking to do something active and unique to Ireland!

Excellent fun and a great introduction to hurling
Aug 2019
We had a wonderful time with our guide, Peter, who so clearly enjoyed the sport and wanted to share hurling with our whole group. Our session involved a mix of adults and children (mostly families), and it was an absolute blast. Everyone in our group came away a huge fan of hurling (some even wanted to continue practicing when they returned home) and the "competitions" we had as a group during our session were so much fun. It was the highlight of our time in Kilkenny!
The only downside: I wouldn't recommend purchasing the dinner afterwards, as the food wasn't excellent and there were other restaurants I would have preferred to try in Kilkenny.

Definitely 2 more fans of Hurling
We booked this tour with just a few ideas of what hurling might be. Our guide/coach Steven took us to a nearby practice field in very close proximity to Kilkenny’s hurling stadium. He taught us the basics of playing hurling as well as some interesting insights about the game itself. After our practice session we were able to go inside the stadium to get a slight feel of what it would be like on a game day. The food served after the practice at the pub was very delicious. We chose the stew as well as the pie. Definitely a must do when in Kilkenny since you can get an impression why people are being crazy about this game. It’s intense but a lot of fun.

Had a great time learning ‘The Warrior’ game of Hurling from Peter in the heartland of hurling in Kilkenny! Fun, fast, and educational.
Now we’ve picked it up on both sides of the Atlantic! 🇨🇦

A fun, active introduction to Irish sporting heritage
Aug 2019
You check-in for the hurling experience at Lanigan's Bar & Hostel, which is in the heart of Kilkenny and brimming with locals and tourists alike. We were greeted by a gentleman named Peter and shortly after arrival (and a drink!), we walked as a group -- of which there were six total -- roughly 20 minutes to the field in which we'd be learning this historic Irish game.

The Ultimate Hurling Experience is for anyone and everyone with basic motor skills, beyond that, regardless of one's physical nature, they will enjoy themselves as they try to conquer passing, walking, running, and shooting in the sport of hurling.

Peter kept the experience light, fun, but also competitive in an enjoyable way for this who wanted a little bit extra from their foray into the sport. The two hours flew by and we felt as though we got great value for our money spent. We had the option, for an extra €5 to eat at Lanigan's afterward. We had places to be, so we didn't take up the offer, but the rest of the group did and I'd highly recommend it if you have the time because you'll be peckish after an afternoon of running around learning a new sport.

If you've any interest at all in learning about Irish sport, history, or experience a piece of the soul of Kilkenny, don't miss this!

A Trip Highlight for Sure
Aug 2019
A friend had suggested we check out hurling while in Ireland and I stumbled upon this opportunity on the IB4UD website. We didn't know what to expect but our host Peter immediately set the stage by showing us a quick video of the "culture" of the sport which had us laughing and interested. We then took a walk to the pitch with him explaining the history and passion of the sport. At the field he showed us the basics and we had a blast trying to get the hang of it. We were very impressed at the skills required and the athletecism that must be required to compete at a top level. It is by far the toughest sport I have seen. Canadians know lacrosse and I thought that was tough!

Overall, the experience was very fun and Peter's jovial style, patience and friendly nature made the whole experience one of our highlights from our trip.

Great Introduction to a New Favorite Sport
Aug 2019
My husband and I and our 19 and 23 year old sons had a great time today learning from Peter about the game of hurling. The group had 5 in total, so we were able to pair up or do some 2 on 2 teams. We purchased our tickets at Lanigan's bar which sponsors the activity and where the activity begins - we had stopped in the day before to learn the time and let them know we would be joining. We had the option to do so with or without food - it seems like a deal to do the tour with food (just €5 additional for 1 of 4 hearty choices). We watched a short video and walked to the field, with Peter answering questions along the way. Once at the field, we spent our time learning the basics of hurling and then got to try out a few things. My family is from the US and didn't know much about hurling, however, we know baseball, tennis, field/ice hockey and have watched lacrosse. Hurling seemed like a little bit of all of that, plus catching the ball (according to rules!). We had a great afternoon. Peter was great at explaining and a wonderfully patient teacher as we all caught on at different speeds. He was also very personable. We got caught up in the excitement around the All-Ireland Hurling Final between Kilkenny and Tipperary which is tomorrow (and ended up watching the semi-finals for the Women - Hurling for them is called Camogie - which Kilkenny will also be in. I would highly recommend this.
