Mike took us out on the boat to see Innisfallen island. Even though the day was cloudy and rainy, it was still a wonderful experience thanks to Mike's great sense of humour and warm personality. On the way over to the island he entertained us with stories and interesting information about the lake and the history of the monastery. He was more prepared for the rain than we were and gave us some waterproof covering. The island itself is beautiful, especially in the misty rain. Mike gave us plenty of time to wander around and explore the island before we hopped on the boat and came back.
No trip to Killarney is complete without a boat tour!

Great tour to do in Killarney! The guides are all locals and have a passion for showing people the wonders and beauty of Killarneys lakes. Inisfallon is an incredibly interesting place too, with centuries of history behind the ruins. A great value trip for Irish holidaying at home, and for tourists from all parts of the world.

We had a wonderful ride with Mike to the island. It was drizzling but he made sure we stayed dry. He told us about the history and gave us tips in our travels in Killarney. The island was peaceful and quiet, and we saw a herd of dear. We could have spent an entire day there.

We visited the island for an hour but could have stayed the whole day.
We took a boat from Ross Castle with Charlie our “captain”. He gave us a fairly detailed history of the island. From the earliest monks who arrived in the 5th century to the movement to the mainland in the 15th century, it’s a fascinating story. The island was one of the earliest centers of learning in Europe. Nobles from the continent as well as local lords sent their eldest sons to learn to read and write. One of their most famous pupils was to become the High King of all Ireland.
The remaining structures give a good idea how the school functioned. This is where the second most important book in Ireland was written, the Annals of Innisfallen. It’s a history of the daily activities of the monks covering a thousand years. Unfortunately you have to go to the Oxford library in the UK to see it.
If you can make the time for the short visit it’s worth it.
