About
The Gap of Dunloe Tour is a must do for visitors to Killarney. The ‘Adventure’ begins daily from our head office at O’Connor’s Pub, 7 High St., Killarney at 10:00am for check in. We can also collect clients from their accommodation in the Killarney area.
Your journey begins with a bus trip to Kate Kearney’s Cottage or Ross Castle (recommended starting point for walkers as it allows more time). From here visitors make the 7 mile walk (please allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the walk). For those who do not wish to walk Jaunting cart’s are also available (at extra cost of €25 per person) to take the clients through the natural unspoilt beauty of the Black Valley, a walker’s paradise.
Upon reaching Lord Brandon’s Cottage, there will be time to enjoy refreshments (not included) at the Cafe, before taking your boat trip through the Lakes of Killarney to Ross Castle where your bus will be waiting to take you back to Killarney. As noted, this tour can also be done in reverse.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- jannA4003VR0 contributionsIt Just Doesn't Get Any Better Than ThisCall it the luck of the Irish, but when Mike and Crazy Tom the Horse offered to take three of my girlfriends and me through the Gap of Dunloe in his jaunting cart, I knew we were in for a great experience. It was better than I could have imagined! Mike entertained us the entire way with stories, tales, insights and observations about the Gap and the area. Our conversation started when I asked how long he'd been doing this. "My first day...my first day on the job. 007 license to kill." I knew then we were in for a treat and I was right. Mike stopped at several prime spots along the way -- including one that offered a beautiful echo -- to allow us to take photos and took several for us, as well as getting in on a few himself. Mike's frequent "Come on, Toooom" and "Come up, come ouuuut" sprinkled throughout our conversation only added to the absolute "Irishness" of the journey. We learned a little about Tom (he likes Guinness, Mike says), who is 7 and will pull the cart until he is about 18, at which time he'll "retire" to giving children rides in a park in a nearby town. Mike also pointed out trail hikes accessible along the Gap path, including one leading to MacGillyCuddy's Reeks and Ireland's tallest mountain. Next time...next time! I'm not sure how the experience could have been any better. Thank you, Mike, for a memorable, entertaining journey through the Gap.Written 8 October 2024
- melaniehL5682MO0 contributionsGreat outingBeautiful boat ride up to the top of the lakes. Our guide was friendly and informative. We rented bikes and rode the gap and back to Killarney and the scenery was breath-taking. Definitely a must-do for anyone in Killarney!Written 5 October 2024
- X8094JOtrishc0 contributionsGreat day and took the bikes too!We had a great trip. Weather was in our favour too! The Guide/Captain was lovely, information and humourous! And Bailey the Ship's Dog kept us all company. Took bikes across with us and cycled back (pedal power not e-bikes). We would highly recommend doing this if you're fit enough.Written 26 September 2024
- FunTimes727030 contributionsBest scenery in Ireland! Don't miss this tour!We toured the Gap of Dunloe 20+ years ago and took this tour again in August 2024. It's one of the best things to do in Ireland. We recommended to our neighbors, and they did it as well while visiting Ireland (around the same time) & were so happy they did. The scenery is stunning. The jaunting cart was fabulous, and I would recommend you pay the extra to have a private ride (2 people).Written 1 September 2024
- H9091WRrobynh0 contributionsBoat ride and drivers were fantastic. Catered for a rainy ride in the boat. Found the Dunhoe story interesting .The actual experience was good but found the booking process confusing. Thought I was booking a boat ride but discovered when I had paid that it involved an 11k walkWritten 30 August 2024
- ColleenP9330 contributionsGet out of your car and into a boat for the best views! We did a bike and boat tour and it was fantastic! We used their recommendation for e-bike rental from Killarney-Rent-a-Bike and were very pleased. We picked the bikes up at 9 am and had time to your Ross Castle before the boat ride started at 11 am. The ride was in an open boat and luckily we were prepared with rain gear as we did have a downpour. I highly recommend!Written 25 August 2024
- Compass7283210 contributionsBeautiful landscape. Ask about a weigh limit! The scenery was the very best. We totally fell in love with the area. My travel buddy and I approached the haunting carts with the rest of the group but we were ignored for 20 mins +. I asked about renting a cart and were told in a little bit. I told them that we had the boat to catch and the jaunting driver told me not to worry they won’t leave us. Then a driver told us that we weee “big people” to be riding the carts and we could ride if we paid the price of 4 people instead of 2 people. Two driver got into a screaming match. Finally the ride started with 4 people??? Near the end it began to rain(not unexpected)the driver pulled a tarp over our laps covered in horse manure. Guess what ended up on our clothing.Written 22 August 2024

- MerseyChris0 contributionsThe Gap of Dunloe by boatThis was a most unusual boat trip to Lord Brandon's Cottage from Ross Castle. Half way through the trip you get to the river which becomes so shallow that the boat has to empty its passengers and you have to walk along the river to deeper water where you get back on the boat. The scenery is beautiful though unfortunately it was quite wet which meant that the white tailed eagle didn't appear. When you get to Lord Brandon's Cottage you can buy snacks and drinks. Some people then walk to pick up a jaunting trap to go along the beautiful Gap of Dunloe whereas others use a bicycle and others walk. We returned by boat. The boat was good value for the length of the tripWritten 10 August 2024
- Odyssey379319340140 contributionsA company to avoid! If I had read all the comments here I would never have chosen this company! Like many customers, we were back on time for the return bus but the driver, who was also very unpleasant and had not made any interesting comments, decided to leave 15 minutes early, leaving us there with children, more than 2.5 hours of walking from the city on a dangerous road, while I am convinced that several members of the group with whom we had talked all day and during the 3 hours of "hiking" on a concrete road where cars and carts speed without worrying about pedestrians, told him that we were at the toilets opposite (which he had a view of). The contact number was wrong, no response on Facebook and by email I was told 1 hour later to take a taxi which of course was never reimbursed. This company is a disgrace and takes advantage of having the same name as another company which is very concerned about its customers. Better to do this tour by yourself.Written 5 August 2024
- progers220 contributionsBeautiful Gap of Dunloe!Walking the Gap of Dunloe was a fantastic way to spend our day. I recommend starting at Kate Kearney!s cottage and walking to Lord Brandon’s cottage…..it’s a prettier walk this way. Pick up the boat there and have a fun ride back to Ross Castle. the walk is steep at times but so lovely. Be aware: I was dreaming of a post-walk pint at Lord Brandon’s before we boarded the boat and there was none to be had. They did have great soup and hot chocolate! Walking the gap took us about 2 hours.Written 5 August 2024

- kmwmanner20180 contributionsGreat way to explore Killarney Lakes and Gap of Dunloe! This was a great way to see the Lakes of Killarney, the Ross Castle and the Gap of Dunloe. Although it was a “tour” and a little more touristy than what we normally like to do, it was a small group and more authentic of a trip. There were only 8 people on the bus and boat with us and we were by ourselves (3) on the jaunting cart.Written 17 July 2024

We had a terrible time with the tour and we were soaked to the skin when we were on the boat part of the tour due to the fact that the boatman took us out on the lakes in the middle of a thunder storm with no way of getting back to land for the full 2 hours. We got a text from the operator to say the boat might be cancelled due to the bad weather forecast and we arrived early and we were told that the tour would be going ahead even though I told him that the weather was very bad and possibly a bit dangerous for such a small boat but he was adamant that it would be OK. After the first lake we were told to leave the boat and walk around the lane to the Old Weir Bridge to get picked up ag from the other side. The weather was getting worse and we were all soaked and finally getting to the landing stage at Lord Brandon cottage where we were due to get the jaun car back over the Gap but we were unable to get the Jaunting Car due to the bad weather conditions and starting the walk over the gap to the meeting point and luckily we were found by the driver who brought us down to the meeting point by his suv car. He said that it was madness to bring people across the lakes in that weather and we are all lucky to have got back. I would definitely steer clear of this company for any further tours and check out the options around killarney for a better company to use instead.

We participated in this trip through the reviews seen on trips to the Killarney area, the boat trip is crazy, you see breathtaking landscapes that only so you can see, if you opt to go back once you arrive with the boat to your destination on foot, we talk about 3.5 hours / 4 and it is really tiring because there are several climbs, another option there are carriages with horses but are expensive as fire, but you can bargain .. the trip itself for 2 adults and 2 children including coach cost 158 €. 128 + 30 bus. Experience beautiful but extremely expensive.

We had great time, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and boat was not crowded at all. Day as nice and sunny and we really enjoyed the ride. It is beautiful to see Killarney from the boat. We took the boat from the castle to Lord Brandon's cottage, from where we hiked to Kate's cottage. Fabulous views. we then took a shuttle bus back to Killarney. Lovely day

The boat tour and walk through the gap were amazing. The boat driver was friendly and helpful. We arrived at Kate Kearneys 45 minutes before our pick up time which we were told twice was 4.30 . We got a drink and waited ,however the bus didn't show up. When we eventually rang we were told to get a lift or a taxi back into town as we had missed the bus. A taxi back to town cost us 40 euro as traffic was heavy. From reviews here I can see this has happened to other people so be careful when booking this tour.

What an experience to view the Gap of Dunloe and the Black Valley from a traditional jaunting car! Much quicker than walking, but you need to be fit enough to walk about a quarter mile of the steepest ascent where the horse finds the going tough. We loved the open boat trip through the 3 lakes with amusing commentary from the boatman. The high-light was shooting the rapids in the long reach!

If you pass through Killarney, you need to plan this day, boat-walk-bus, the site is absolutely splendid, we particularly enjoyed the 1h30 boat ride. Unfortunately, the organization was more than approximate and the information very imprecise, despite the questions asked (and asked) about the "meeting point". Arriving at the Gap, we exchanged with several customers just as undecided as us on the follow-up to be given to the hike. Misinformation -> we met at Brandon's Cottage at 4 p.m., without a bus return solution and the organizer, contacted by phone and very angry, let us down (basically, I can't pick you up, manage...). It was thanks to the assistance of the cottage manager (who contacted a taxi for us because no network) that we joined our car. An extra hour walk + 35 euros taxi back to Killarney, to the O'Connel pub where no one showed up to at least refund us the bus. Obviously, according to the cottage people and the taxi, this mishap is common. I therefore strongly suggest that you go through an organisation other than the one based in pub 7 High Street.

Very worthwhile day. A great package of activities that included: viewing the castle, an interesting group boat trip, hike at your own pace through the stunning scenery of the Gap, a rewarding pub/cafe at the end - all with buses to take you to and from the town of Killarney. If you are fit and energetic with good footwear, don't miss the 2-3 hour hike component through the dramatic mountains of the Dunloe Gap. Highly recommended.

This tour was amazing! The highlight of our stay in Killarney. We walked through the gap of Dunloe and were amazed by the spectacular scenery. The boat trip back to Ross castle was great, we had a nice guide and got the chance to see all three lakes. Had to get off and walk a little stretch because the water was low and that part was amazing as well. Would absolutely recommend doing this when in Killarney, it's better than just being on a bus all day but you don't need to worry about organising getting there and back yourself. Perfect trip!

An excellent way of exploring this beautiful location. We chose to walk from Lord Brandon’s cottage (where the boat dropped us) to Kate Kearney’s Cottage, a distance of 11km. The walk was fairly easy for the most part though the ascent to the Head of the Gap is quite strenuous. It took us nearly 3 hours which meant we only had 10 minutes to spare for the scheduled departure time of the bus back to Killarney. It would have been nice to have had an extra half hour at KK’s cottage to get a drink after the walk. A special mention for the guide on the boat - he was excellent- knowledgeable, amusing with some fascinating anecdotes about the area.

It was a great walk to the top of the gap. Beautiful views and an awesome environment.
Low traffic. The tour in the boat was fantastic, a must. Even if it was raining, we could enjoy very much passing through the 3 lakes.

How much does the jaunting cart cost and how many people can you fit in it?
Written 26 July 2019
The cost is 50 Euros and you can only get two people plus the driver in the cart. Its a great trip up over the gap but be sure you get a very experienced horse and driver as the road is very narrow and its mainly switch backs. There are some areas that are quite dangerous and there was an accident a couple of years ago and two passengers were thrown out and killed when the horse bolted. I am not trying to scare anyone as my husband and I had a great time but I did ask the question before we hired the driver and horse. They had been doing the trip for many years and the horse was older and very used to the route. We had no problems. The carts are only two wheeled so you need a horse that is very stable and calm and of course a very experienced driver that knows the horse well. Hope this helps and you enjoy your trip.
