Journey with John Todd: Cork, Blarney Castle, and Cobh Tour
Our tour with John Todd to Cork, Blarney Castle, and Cobh was an absolute delight from start to finish. John’s expertise and passion for the region shone through, enriching every moment of our adventure. From the moment we boarded the comfortable train, John’s warm welcome and engaging commentary set the tone for the day. His deep knowledge of the area’s history, culture, and hidden gems added depth to our experience, making each stop more meaningful. At Cork, we wandered through charming English market. The visit to Blarney Castle was a highlight, where John regaled us with fascinating tales of the castle’s storied past and ensured we didn’t miss the chance to kiss the famous Blarney Stone. Cobh’s picturesque harbor captivated us, and John’s insights into its maritime heritage and poignant history left a lasting impression. We loved the Cobh heritage centre where we discovered more about the Irish famine and the Titanic. Throughout the tour, John’s professionalism, humor, and genuine care for his guests were evident. He went above and beyond to ensure everyone felt welcomed and included, creating a sense of camaraderie among fellow travelers. Overall, our day with John Todd was nothing short of exceptional. His passion for his homeland, coupled with his expertise as a guide, made our journey through Cork, Blarney Castle, and Cobh truly unforgettable. We cannot recommend this tour highly enough – it’s a must-do for anyone looking to explore the beauty and history of Ireland with a knowledgeable and personable guide like John. Earl Carien

    Perfect a day trip
Our guide, John Todd, was perfect in every way. I was worried about my lack of English when I decided to travel alone, but he took care of me attentively from our first meeting. Cork was a great place, but I was deeply moved by John's guidance. I have so much respect and gratitude.

Dan and Kelly Moses in Ireland 2/28 to 3/10 - Dublin with trips to Belfast, Cork/Cobh, Cliffs of Moher and Galway.
My wife Kelly and I had amazing travels on the three rail tours in early March. Dublin to Belfast, Cork/Cobh then to Cliffs of Moher and Galway. The latter two, John Todd was our guide, and he was the best! He spent time with everyone in the group, extremely knowledgeable of all the sites and locations. Very special memories on this vacation, and these tours were a big part of them. Thank you Railtours and John Todd for an unforgettable experience. We will be back!

Great Trip to Blarney Castle, St.Colman's Cathedral and Cobh Heritage Center!
Norman of Railtours did a phenomenal job of leading our group. Our group rode the Irish Rail train to Cork and then we were met by a bus to take us to Blarney Castle and Gardens. After time on this site we visited the cathedral in Cobh as well as the Heritage Center. Norman ensured that the schedule was working to maximize opportunities of seeing the sights, shopping, and having lunch. Norman also gave us Blarney Castle map booklets which were helpful. I would definitely recommend this tour.

    Loved the crystal tour!
We had a great train journey to the Kilkenny Castle and to the Waterford crystal factory. John was an excellent guide who loved sharing his knowledge of Ireland with our group. Beautiful weather added to the views on this scenic train ride. Crystal making was shared in great detail with an up close look at all the steps. Really enjoyed!

    A Wonderful Trip exploring Ireland
I had a great time traveling with our group and guide Brian in southern and western Ireland. We went to so many places, beautiful Cork and Cobh, Blarney Castle, and the Cliffs of Moher, just to name a few. I learned a lot about Irish history and even printed out my ancestry crest from county Tyrone. We stayed for 2 nights in a lovely hotel and had time on our own in the evenings to explore, have dinner, and listen to some traditional music. Our guide was funny, warm, and very knowledgable. There were lots of surprises along the way and I enjoyed every bit of it. I am grateful for my experience with Rail Tours Ireland and for Brian Dutton our guide.

    Gabriel was awesome
Gabriel was an amazing tour guide. He was kind, knowledgable and very funny, and he provided great recommendations to local places to eat and drink. The travel across the country was safe and we knew we were in good hands the entire time.

    John the dream tour guide!
John Todd was a dream tour guide! The day began nice and early with a chipper John who welcomed us to the family for the day. He entertained us on the train ride to Kilkenny with stories of Ireland. He showed us around Kilkenny and provided us with history and fun facts. Next, we went to the beautiful Waterford and learned about the process of making Waterford crystal. It was so cool! The whole trip John provided us with the perfect balance of guidance and freedom to explore. He checked in frequently to make sure we were having a good experience. And let me tell you, we were! I am looking forward to more tours with John in the future!

    A day with John
Wow what a day! John Todd was the most thoughtful and incredible guide. The first train ride to Kilkenny was easy to navigate and extremely beautiful. John shared his knowledge and fun facts about the entire country with us. In Kilkenny we got to learn about the castle as well as journey around the town on our own. Our host was sure to collect us all and make sure everyone was comfortable every step of the way. Next we were off to Waterford to learn about the amazing crystal! John was also able to share with us some wonderful facts about its Viking history and show us Vikings triangle with some extra time. He even gave us a beautiful map of Ireland to keep take with us on the train ride back to Dublin. A keepsake I will cherish forever. I can’t say enough good things about this beautiful tour. Highly recommend, and if you are able ask for John!!

    A great day in Ireland
Im from the US and booked this tour to Cork because it fit in with my timeline.I cannot say enough positive about this wonderful day ,but more importantly John Todd . The day was rainy and cold but John kept us all together and encouraged us to interact with one another and he interacted with each group and person in the group telling us wonderful stories and folklore about Ireland you could tell how much he wanted to educate ,in the best possible way, us about Ireland . He even made sure I got on the right train back to my hotel.I was so impressed with the rail system . It was clean and on time. The food at Blarney castle was better than at my hotel. What a beautiful country.

Incredible tour w the best guide!!!
Wow, I’ve never been more impressed with a tour guide. John Todd was the best!! He gave us a ton of information w the most upbeat attitude ever and he waited extra after the tour was over to make sure we got on the right tram safely back to our hotel. Never have had a guide go above and beyond like that before.

    Great experience
The tour that we had to the ring of Kerry was wonderful. Our tour guide, John Todd, was really helpful. He explained thoroughly and clearly what to expect from the sightseeing, the historical context and gave us information to understand Ireland as a country. The bus part of the tour was a bit rushed some times but it helped that John signalled us throughout the tour where the sites and landmarks were coming up or located so we wouldn’t miss them. Overall, a very pleasant and comfortable experience! Would definitely recommend!

    Paddy's the best!
We saw some beautiful country on this tour, but Paddy (our tour guide) is the reason we give it a 5 out of 5. Meeting and spending time with him was one of the best memories made in Ireland. We are thankful for the time.

We were promised that two tickets would be included for the Dublin n Hop on Hop off bus tour once we got to Dublin, to "show ourselves around" without a guide. Okay. Even though this tour is costing us $4,800 for two, fine, we willl show ourselves around Dublin on that Hop-on bus. But now we are told we have no such tickets included, because we "didn't book directly with" them! We didn't know or imagine there could be a difference in what was included, as stated in writing when we signed up, with Vacations By Rail, who also sells their packages. So now we are left with NOTHING after paying $4,800!! Incidentally this is billed as a 10 day tour, although the 10th day consists of nothing; we just walk away and go get our own transport back to wherever we came from, at our own expense. It would be more accurate to say a 9 day tour.

We were hesitant when we booked this tour but so glad we did. I really like this approach as you are not part of an actual tour group for the full 6 days. This allowed us to have our evenings free to explore the city where we were staying and enjoy the local food at our leisure. The hotels they booked for us were exceptional and close to the sights.

Everything went smoothly and we were always informed by either our packet or the guide for the day on what to expect the next day. We had three guides that were part of Rail Tours which were Brian, Peter and Paddy and the others were brokered out to other tours. All were great and very informative. I think we only had one day that led us to some confusion which was our excursion to the Aran Islands but in the end it worked out. One thing I would recommend is to maybe switch the last two days up somehow as they are both very long days. This company organized everything for you and let's you leave your worries at the door.

80% of the tour was excellent , Bryan, Anthony, Michael were 100%. Sadly on night 5 return to Dublin from Galway was a disaster. We briefly met the guide Brenden , I think was his name, clearly did not have time for our group of 8 that had been together for the 5 days . He was very much involved with a group that he had been travelling with. It was the loudest group I have ever heard on a train, no respect for other guests if fact our tour guide was instigating the rowdiness. We could not hear each other talk, we were tired . We had to move to another car to get some quiet.
At Dublin , I asked if his group was going on next mornings tour to Belfast, and if they were I did not want to go, I was told the it was my problem and he walked away.
I did not go on the Belfast day 6 trip because simply put after 5 amazing days, one quide has left me with no desire to take another RailTours. We came along way and it is very disappointing to leave disappointed after all the lovely things we have done

This was a wonderful tour. Terrence and Mike were two of our guides who provided site info as well as end of the day activities, in particular, Celtic Dance in Killarney, and restaurants for dinner. The majority of the 6 day tour was spent on tour busses, some of which were tight quarters. The hotel accommodations were great. Two nights in a B&B that was clean, good food and the proprietor washed clothes for us. However, the decor was dated.

Our guides were excellent Brian and Paddy. They were very informative. I learned so much about the Irish History.
Pro's: Pro's great way to see most of the country and learn about the history from a professional. Everything was included as far as tickets, hotels and breakfast. I enjoyed being with other travelers and we made lasting friendships.
Cons: We are on a schedule and so could not spend as much time as we wanted at some of the sights and venues. Lunch place was always predetermined so you were stuck going only to their choice. Most places were pretty good by average cost of the meals were 40-50 Euros per couple. It would have been nice to have a day off in the middle to rest a bit.

Overall it was a great way to see the country for the first time.

This is a great way to see all of the major sights in Ireland. The guides are very helpful, even going above and beyond to make dinner reservations for you and make recommendations for things to do on your free evenings. All transportation is covered which was the best part. Price was reasonable and all the hotels were very nice. Highly recommend!

Excellent service, accommodations & superior tour guides. After several (COVID) postponements and a change in the number and names of people touring, Railtours Ireland was so genuinely helpful. From the office staff to Brian our tour guide, The "All Ireland" tour was just that - culture, coffee, pubs & all the top Bucket List attractions. Clear & concise historical information throughout. Number ONE tour company in Ireland? Probably. You won't be disappointed

There is no better way to see Ireland than by rail. Sit back relaxed and enjoyed the views. The tour guides were just great. Shout out to Brian and John on our six day tour. They couldn't make our trip more enjoyable. Food, hotels and music were great. Nothing negative to see at all. 100 % would do it again.

When my wife and I were leaving Canada for our 6 day tour, we were expecting to see the majority countryside of Ireland from a railcar with all the comforts of stretching, access to food, bathroom and wifi service. Fast travel with direct service from Point A to Point B where available; filling in amenities with bus travel where railcar service was not available. I had inquired whether our tour agenda had a hop on-hop off feature but apparently this was not an option. Fees paid were in line with this agenda.

Unfortunately, we spent the of the time driving past Ireland's tour attractions by bus tour without enjoying the comforts listed above. On the tour, Cobh was a huge disappointment. Thought we were going to be able to walk around as we had heard so much about the community, but the tour agenda was in and out quickly. Travel days were long including the best example was leaving Killarney by mini-bus at 7:00 AM, travelled by bus for almost 2 hours to arrive at Limerick train station to only get on a larger tour bus and travel the Westcoast Trail for driving 7 hours to arrive in Galway, Front line staff, drivers and and subcontract operators were great and no disrespect for their service(s), but the design of the tour was both long days and rushed pace day after day for 6 days. After day 3, a few couples stepped out of our scheduled tour agenda and a small group of us gave direct feedback to the owner operator of the company in the hotel lobby of Galway Hotel about our expectations of a "railtour". Hopefully this feedback makes a difference to future guests of the company. With our "free day" we enjoyed walking the streets of Galway and local attractions rather the fast bus tour pace. Final straw of disappointment was on Day 6 early morning departure travelling to Northern Ireland by rail in the mid-morning and driving past the Titanic Museum where so many southern Irish locals had strongly recommended this attraction. I read our tour materials, thought we were visiting the attraction - and still got it wrong.

There were some positive highlights. Reviewing the Ring of Kerry bus tour, loved the set attraction of working dog shepherd demonstration. Individual tourist stops: Cliffs of Moher were great; Giants Causeway and Bushmills Distillery was great.

In brief, we both hate to travel by bus and selected this tour operator format to specifically avoid this. In reality, we spent the most amount of our time on the bus, driving past attractions with a quick pace at designated stops. Simply - frustrated and disappointed.

In August 2022 - Rail travel fans - not the tour for you.

The 9 day Titanic Rail Trail and Wild Atlantic Way grand tour was no more than a combination of separate day trips involving different "hosts" /drivers/coaches and fellow travelers each day. The term rail tour was misleading as there were only 4 trips on rail and the rest of the tour was made using coaches that never picked up and dropped off at the hotels where we stayed, we had to carry our luggage over a long distance from the hotels to the coaches and vice versa everyday! The pre-tour information was sketchy and the itinerary for the first 7 days in the package given to us by the host on commencement of the tour was missing. It took us numerous reminders to the Dublin office to get the complete itinerary at long last half way through our tour. Each host was only responsible for his part in the 9 day "relay" itinerary and some did not have the qualities of "host". On return from Belfast to Dublin, our host left us outside Heuston Station to wait for a pre-booked taxi and took off, but due to his miscommunication with the taxi dispatcher the taxi driver was waiting for us on another side of the Station. We spent almost an hour in panic late at night waiting for the taxi and had to seek the help of the Station Security staff. Luckily the taxi driver eventually found us. In the first place the Railtour host should have made sure that we got into the taxi before he left! The Company also did not have a toll free telephone number outside office hours to provide emergency assistance to travelers like us who are not day trippers. The only saving grace were the hosts responsible for the Clifden sector of the tour, John and his son Barry who were really nice people worthy of the title "host". Forget about rail tour in Ireland, just join a coach tour which would ensure you are travelling with the same guide, same driver and have the coach waiting for you at the hotel's entrance.
