Great day out! Our driver/guide got us to the Newgrange site pretty much before anyone else so we easily got admission. Newgrange was very impressive and the newgrange guide very informative and conversational. We ended up having a group philosophy sesh inside at the end of the official guided tour with the tour guide which was great food for thought. Entertaining and insightful commentary on the road trip by our driver/guide between sites. He went out of his way to ensure we had a fantastic experience. Ticked off all the major Boyne Valley attractions and made some great friends too!

What a great trip! Got outside of Dublin and saw some amazing things that I never would have seen on my own. Johnny (the tour guide/driver) was great and very flexible based on what we wanted to see and how long we wanted to spend at each location. Definitely saw plenty that made the time spent in the bus completely worth it (some day tours you just spend all the time driving, not this one!) So glad I ended up booking this last minute.

We really enjoyed our adventure with HilltopTreks. The driver and tour guide, John, was fabulous. He was able to get us in to see New Grange early and we didn't hit any snags there. I guess it can be a problem sometimes. Along the way towards lunch time we stopped at a little spot that served us delicious soup and sandwiches. This was amazing, as it was cold outside and actually started snowing while we ate.
Not to mention the wonderful places we got to see and enjoy with my family.
Love this company and our driver John. Will be happy to recommend to anyone.

I did two full day tours with Hilltop. The first was a small group tour with Richard to Powerscourt, Wicklow and Glendalough. I loved the itinerary. Richard prepares you for your visit to Powerscourt and Glendalough and then you visit them at your own pace. There was sufficient time to see all the gardens at Powerscourt and have a bite to eat and there was enough time to see the highlights of Glendalough. The scenery is beautiful and Richard keeps you informed and entertained along the way. The second tour was a private tour with John Byrne. Being private, the tour was designed around my interests. Highlights were Bru na Boinne (visitor centre), Newgrange, Knowth, Monasterboice, Slane Castle, Trim Castle and a sheep farm. I had a fascinating time with John and learned a lot. Wonderful tour.

I booked the Celts and Castles tour online using getyourguide.com. The cost for an adult is €35 which is reasonable and the meeting point (AIB O'Connell St) was easily accessible.

The day did not get off to a good start. I arrived and gave the tour guide Darragh my name and he informed me that he had to take payment. I told him that I had paid online and showed my e-ticket. He replied that they hadn't taken it off my card yet (they had) but let me onto the bus.

Another passenger of the same first name arrived and when he asked about payment she said that she had paid a deposit. So clearly she was the passenger on his list who owed payment. However, he let her on to the bus and asked me to step off the bus and again tried to say that I had not paid in full and owed money. I logged on to my banking online to show him the transaction and again he replied that they hadn't taken it off my card yet.

He proceeded to call his Head Office and said "how can I explain this to her because she's saying she doesn't owe money" (which I found extremely condescending) and then passed the phone over to me. The person on the phone proceeded to explain how "I" had booked in Temple Bar and only paid a deposit so owed €28. Immediately I handed the phone back to Darragh and said that's not me, I didn't book in Temple Bar, I booked and paid online, the payment is owed by the other passenger (with the same name). His response after ending the call was to say "Now that that's sorted...". There was no apology for the mix-up (which I felt was pure lack of common sense to be honest).

Surely he would have realised that the passenger owing money was the passenger who said she'd paid a deposit, NOT the customer who said she booked and paid online and showed her ticket?? I was very annoyed about the incident and the lack of apology.

The tour itself is average. The tour is not as advertised. We did not visit Fourknocks passage tomb, Monasterboice Monastery or Knowth. The areas we did visit were Newgrange, Slane Castle (viewed from the entrance gate for a quick 5 minute photo op), Trim Castle, Slane Abbey and The Hill of Tara.

As a Dublin native and a History teacher I was not going on this tour as a typical tourist. I wanted to learn about the history of these places. However, at Trim Castle we were left for 30 minutes to wander the grounds whereas I would have liked to do the tour of the Keep (which is €5 as opposed to grounds only which is €2).

There was a of travelling between places and while the guide Darragh filled much of it with Irish history and theories about the real purpose of Newgrange (hint: energy), there were also unusual biased comments such as referring to Ireland as a satellite state for the EU rather than a Republic.

The highlights of the whole tour were Newgrange and lunch. As the Newgrange visitor centre is closed for renovations there is free entry into the Newgrange tomb which is fantastic. However, this was at the start of the tour so it went pretty downhill from there. Lunch in Hugo's in Slane village was lovely and reasonable (€10 for ful bowl of soup, sandwich and can of diet coke).

Overall, I would not recommend this tour. It would be more enjoyable to visit the locations by yourself by car.

Let me start by saying that the sites are worth visiting, but I would suggest that you find another tour company. The tour started out okay. The bus smelled of cigaret smoke and the guide was easily irritated, especially when some of the guest struggling with the language did not understand his directions, but overall the level was acceptable. The trouble really started when we got to Trim Castle. He booked a guided tour for all of us and we where then asked to pay EUR 4 per person for admission and the tour (we were free not to participate though). When I pointed out that according to the description of the tour, admission at Trim Castle was included he became very angry and furiously denied that this was the case. I then showed him the description from Trustadvisor (booked through their homepage), which just lead to him claiming that as this was not the official brochure from Hiltoptreks he could not be responsible for what was stated on Tripadvisor. Because he became so angry we immediately surrendered the discussion and paid up. A couple of minutes later an Italian lady showed me their tour description where it was also stated that admission was included. The guide overheard it and then he literately exploded. He became so verbally aggressive and threatening in his body language that I was actually scared. For the rest of the tour we kept our distance which was not that difficult as he did not leave the bus for any of the stops for the rest of the tour. We were just send of on our own at each site. Luckily there was still google so we were able to obtain information concerning these sites. Finally, when we got back to Dublin and was let of the bus - relieved that the tour was over - we walked of without saying goodbye. A bit childish I know, but a sort of a silent protest. That resulted in the guide standing outside the bus aggressively screaming goodbye at us 8-10 times. I think this is the most horrible tour that I have ever been on, but again when that is said, the sites are fantastic. So don't miss it, just pick a different provider.

Hi I’m really sorry that you had this experience on one of my tours .... I’m shocked really ... I never heard anyone give me this description of one of our guides. I can only greatly apologize and believe me I will be having words with this guide about this unacceptable behavior. Thank you for letting me know about this and I can also assure you this is not the norm and not what I want for my clients

The tour was led by an incredible Student of Irish History, Matt, who was also a Great driver, calm under pressure and so very personable. You are fortunate to have him on your staff. I'm so very glad he persisted at gaining our entrance into The Newgrange Monument. Thank you again, Matt of Hilltoptreks.

My husband and I went on this tour because we wanted to see some of the ancient places that we have only seen in books. Matt was an amazing driver and tour guide- we got all we wanted and more from our trip! He actually got out and walked with us at the different stops (when other companies just have drivers who sit in the bus while people explore) and told us all about Ireland and why each place was important to Irish heritage. Our favorite day in Ireland was this tour! Thank you for your passion and insight, Matt!

We booked this tour at the last minute and we’re so glad we did. Johnny was our guide who was a very safe driver, well organized and knowledgeable. The small van made it easier to get in and out of places. One of the best lunches we had in Ireland was at the small cafe he took us to.
Newgrange was the highlight. I knew nothing about it and was really amazed at the construction and history. If you’re a large person especially width wise you’re not going to be able to get into the structure. It’s small and narrow.
We saw some large Celtic crosses, beautiful scenery in the Boyne Valley.
