This was part of the many attractions we visited on our trip to Cork City on 18 April.

From the outside walls when one stops & parks outside(free parking) it does not look like much but certainly worth the 10 euros , self guided tour - paper self guide which is very easy to use by following the number sequence which is also quite clearly marked at each station within the jail. As you enter there is also someone to assist you should you not be sure of what to do.

The self guide pamphlet gives you details of each station & insight into some of the reasons why people went to jail including a 9 yr old which was quite sad.

Towards the end there is an interactive quiz which gives you further insight into prison life.

Once you leave the building you then have an opportunity to walk around the outside . There are bathrooms on site but I did not see a cafe/coffee shop. The jail opens at 10am & it was better than we expected

I really enjoyed the self-guided tour of Cork Gaol today. It is a tenner admission but it is also definitely worth paying the mere €2 extra for the handset to listen to the guide and the various inmates telling you their stories!
The West Wing is beautifully restored, such an elegant building full of history and character. Many of the cells are open to step into and the audio guide tells you the story of its inhabitant, the most famous one being Countess Markiewicz.
You also get to visit the governors office and the punishment room. It's well worth doing the Gaoler's quiz in the punishment room by the way!
Afterwards you can walk around the outside and see the old hospital, debtors jail and exercise yard.
Really interesting tour. It has a one way system at the moment due to social distancing and only one person can enter a cell at a time. But the cells are small and people move freely so you will not be waiting long if at all. The landings are quite wide though, it wasnt crowded at all to be fair.
Definitely worth a visit. Plenty for the kids to enjoy as well as history or sociology buffs.

Old prison which is nice to visit, well preserved and very nicely decorated with the cells still present. With an audio guide to follow at your own pace with a story illustrated with lifelike puppets for each cell, very nicely done. This is at the top of the city so best to get there via the hop on hop off.

Cork city Gaol is a good place to spend an hour. It has a lot of history and the dolls were cool. I enjoyed that the staff lets you fully explore the place on your own without interruptIng and ruining experience. The only part that I disliked was that they put some lame polls in middle of cells to prevent you from taking good pictures and getting close to manekens. That also ruins the immersion since it wasn't there in real life scenario in Gaol.

A trip I’ve wanted to take for many years & it was worth it. A fascinating place steeped in history. The exhibits throughout are great & touch on many periods of history. I recommend the audio guide which you can start & stop as you go. The visit will take about 2hrs & is suitable for kids.

We were a family of 4, two teenagers. Admission price was extremely reasonable at €30 for family ticket. We didn’t opt for the audio tour. There is lots to see so we took our time and followed our guide map which had the attractions numbered and a brief description and history of what you were looking at. You could go into a lot of the cells and get the history and reason why the prisoners were in there. It’s a big site so it takes about 2 hours to take it all in. There is a small gift shop on the way out and you can buy tea/coffee and some small cakes or chocolate bars and then sit outside. In the whole it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it.

We visited the Gaol and really enjoyed the experience. It is very well done with wax works depicting the characters and the information leaflet is very good. Definitely worth a visit while in Cork ( not far from the city Centre )

I paid a euro or two extra and did the audio tour, well worth that little bit extra.
The staff here are extremely helpful and explain how to get the most out of the museum without being pushy.
The Gaol itself has been restored but I was delighted to see that there are still some bits that haven’t and you get a better sense of the original atmosphere of the place. I’m told there is a resident ghost but unfortunately I didn’t get to confirm that for myself.
There is a radio museum on the upper floors and it’s well worth a venture up the original stone stairs for.
It’s also possible to walk around the exterior and I’d recommend it, not only is there plenty to see but it’s a nice spot to look out over the city.

My husband and I did the self-guided audio tour and really enjoyed it. It's well thought out, interesting and educational. The way the tour tells the stories of multiple people really brings the history to life, even though it is very bleak. The condition of the Gaol is great. We were able to walk to the Gaol from our hotel in the city center, but it's a little over a mile and a decent amount uphill, so if you have mobility issues, Taxi there is the way to go. Also, the tour has a few flights of stairs, I didn't notice an elevator but we weren't traveling with anyone that needed it, so if you do, you may want to inquire ahead of time

The Gaol is an amazing attraction! An old prison turned museum, it has been preserved well over the last two centuries and has a lot of content to see and hear. It's very interactive too, as it has games all over and a set of friendly and helpful staff that really help make the experience a lot more pleasant. This place works well for coming in alone or with friends and family. There's a quaint gift shop too with a lot of good stuff in there, I personally chose to go with the local chocolates and wall hangings.
