- fionabB4193TK0 contributionsHistory rather witch storiesLess history and more ghosts and witch stories. But the two story telling guides were very informative and loved the changing characters throughout the tour.Written 6 October 2024
- AliceInTheVoid0 contributionsHighly recommendedSuch a lovely tour! Mony Python style humour, passionate and knowledgeable guides. Great communication with the office via email and phoneWritten 4 October 2024
- saz0n0vaa0 contributionsHighly enjoyable and entertaining experienceHighly enjoyable and entertaining experience! And we learned a lot! Both Alexander and the spooky Monk were fully “in character”, and both deserve an Oscar :) This tour was one of the main highlights of our trip, and we will keep great memories of this evening. Totally recommend to anyone who likes spooky stories and yet wants to learn more of the history of Edinburgh. The tour is mostly held in the area of the Royal Mile, so there was not a lot of walking (but make sure you take an extra layer for the evening, as it gets chilly quickly). It was fun to discover all the tiny hidden courtyards in the city centre we won’t find by ourselves.Written 30 September 2024
- Discover571607926820 contributionsFunny, interesting and a brilliant way to introduce EdinburghHighly recommend this enjoyable evening! We felt welcomed from the first moment and laughed, oohed and aahed throughout the evening. We heard interesting details, and would recommend this to anyone wanting a great experience. Thank you Mr Claperton and the Mad Monk!!Written 29 September 2024
- tristanmZ5260QY0 contributionsBest Ghost Tour in Edinburgh! This was my second time on the Ghosts and Gore Walking Tour, and it did not disappoint! My first experience was over New Year's last year with friends, and I enjoyed it so much that I brought my dad along in September. This tour is hands down one of the best I've ever been on—it's incredibly well-produced, hilariously entertaining, and an all-around fantastic experience. I can't recommend it enough, and I'll definitely be returning for another round next time I am in Scotland!Written 24 September 2024
- Voyage5891400 contributionsGhosts and Ghore tour - to die for !!!!Extremely enjoyable experience. First class knowledge of the comperes with great attention to detail and engaging interaction with the group. The costume character played the role really well together with Mr Clapperton whose knowledge supplemented the act. FRIGHT factor was great !!! worked really well and would certainly recommend 😀Written 15 September 2024
- SChetwynd0 contributionsGreat Ghosts & Gore TourGreat tour, super guides, both very informative, lots of laughs and good fun. There were about 20 on the tour, which was a good number, we could all ‘coorie in’ and get close enough to listen. The main guide really looked the part in his costume, however, the wee jumper-ooter guy could do with a new skeleton mask. I struggled to make out part of what he was saying when he was dressed as the witch (Agnes Finnie) as he had a face covering on, so quite muffled (especially if you’re a tourist on the tour, I’m ok as I’m from Edinburgh). I still managed to learn lots of new stories, great tour, and will defo bring the kids when they are a bit older. The tour was meant to be 90 minutes, but we were informed at the start that this may run over as they have lots to tell us and checked if that was ok with everyone for trains, buses, pick-ups. We walked down from the Witchery and into James Close, where we stood for some time, then a very short walk to Makars Court, into Parliament Square (I was the chosen witch) into the car park at the back of St Giles Cathedral, interesting to be shown John Knox Grave (Number 23) Stopped at the Heart of Midlothian and headed back up towards the Witchery. It would have been quite nice though to maybe see a few more closes, quirky building or parts of the Royal Mile? But a great tour. ThanksWritten 10 September 2024

We had two teenagers who said it was hilarious and loved meeting all the quirky characters along the way. Our guide Mr Clapperton (Deceased) was charming and knowledgeable, we completely forgot how tired our legs were and got swept along in the fun! 100% recommend this tour. - 474nidhia0 contributionsITS A HISTORY LESSONIt was a great tour for knowing the history of Edinburgh but IT IS NOT AT ALL SCARY. I went in thinking it would be a walking tour around Edinburgh's "haunted" areas but it was more of a history field trip. Good if you are going with kids.Written 25 August 2024
- terrilT6939OE0 contributionsExcellent!Fabulous! Went on the non-spooky Greyfriars small grpup tour. Robin had so much wonderful knowledge about history and so many details, I feel like I need to take the tour again to truly absorb it all. It was lighthearted and fun to learn so much! Expecting a tour of the Greyfriars Kirkyard graveyard to be boring? Thinking this is a site you can view on your own? Well, I am here to tell you that if this is what you expect- you will be disappointed! Our tour guide, Robin was an absolute legend! He was not only extremely knowledgeable, but also affable, and downright hilarious. His witty humor, paired with fascinating historical backstories, and visual examples helped make this tour a 5 STAR marvel.
And because this tour left me inspired... here is a bit of creative expression that will hopefully intrigue you to find out more...
As a gravestone remembers,
Those who long be gone
So will my memories cherish
This day long after I've withdrawn
From this mighty fortified city of Edinburgh
With its castle and sworn protectors
Standing guard over Flodden Wall
Ensuring the mighty city will never fall
So to you reader I say
Book this tour so that you may
Learn, laugh and forever remember
That even in death, one can find splendor.
I bet William McGonagall woul approve of this poem ;)
INTRIGUED? Book this tour NOW!

Greyfriars Kirkyard houses many graves and tombs, each with their own fascinating tale that simply cannot be expressed by just the epitaph alone.
With this tour, you'll hear the incredible stories of those who lie within the Kirkyard, from a WWI fighter ace to an unsung D-Day hero. From the possible origin of turnips in the UK to one of the first caricaturists.
The tour contents was written during last year's lockdown by the guide himself, Robin.
As a result, the tour is a truly unique experience!
Not only that, but Robin's passion for the subject matter was evident in his enthusiasm throughout the tour and his willingness and capability to deal with any questions that we threw his way.
With the smaller group size, this tour feels a lot more personal and allows for questions and discussions throughout.
From my experience, the tour felt well paced and thorough as we travelled around the Kirkyard hearing the different stories.
I believe with such comprehensive content, the tour is tailorable to suit the group 's interests whether it's the historical aspects or the graves that inspired JK Rowling.
Priced at £15 per person (at the time of writing), I feel that the price is fair given the time and effort put in by Robin to bring a truly new experience. There are many tours in Edinburgh and often the contents of them overlap so it is very refreshing to see so much effort put in to creating a new tour.
The next time my Fiancée and I pass through Greyfriars Kirkyard, we'll be able to fondly recall the many tales that Robin told on this tour.
Thanks Robin for a fantastic, memorable experience! My fiancée and I really enjoyed it and will definitely be back.

Very enjoyable, interesting, and informative. Particularly liked the use of old photographs to bring the stories alive. Robin skilfully combined history with fun anecdotes and the occasional JK Rowling reference for the kids - who loved spotting all the names from the Harry Potter books on gravestones. The hour and a half flew by thank you so much!

We are Edinburgh residents and decided to book the tour as a way to explore more about somewhere familiar. From the very start the company are brilliant and had no issues with our little dog joining the adventure. In the end myself and my partner were the only ones on our tour with the absolutely fantastic Robin as our guide.
He was incredibly knowledgeable and offered real depth of information for many of the amazingly detailed graves. He peppered the tour with nuggets of additional information and great humour. We very much appreciated how enthusiastic he was about the history of so many of the “names on stones”. As lovers of history, Robin was the perfect guide and we could have quite easily spent a week there exploring with him! A particular highlight was when he decided to challenge Scotland’s worst poet though we did feel that Robin outperformed him in the best of ways.
If you are looking for a a ghosts and ghoulies style tour with the scare factor then this is not for you. But if you are genuinely curious about the people who chose Greyfriar’s as their final resting place then this is absolutely the tour you want! Highly recommend!

We booked this tour last minute and when we arrived we found it was just me, my partner and Robin, this was definitely one our highlights of our trip, Robin was so informative and knowledgeable, very easy going was a real delight to walk around a cemetery with. We often went off track talking about other tombs in the graveyard and he even knew about this, so although he had an itinerary to work through he clearly knows about the rest of the graveyard.
The booking was in my partner's name and he went out of his way to find people with the same surname that were buried there, which was a lovely touch.
This is a must if your visiting. It was a real easier. Thank you so much, Robin.

I had a wonderful time on this tour! Robin was our tour guide, and he was super fun and knowledgeable about the cemetery and the town. I like that he made the tour fun and light-hearted while still highlighting the complex history of Edinburgh and its inhabitants.
I really think cemetery tours are one of the best ways to get to know a city, because you hear about so many different people's lives--I guess the great equalizer is death!

Excellent information, friendly and enthusiastic tour guide. Freezing weather and snow but he carried on like it was just a slight drizzle with barely a coat and a brolly against the harsh December Scottish elements.
Would come back (in summer next time hahaha) again as I'm sure there is much more still to know from your human fountain of knowledge x

Hands down the BEST tour we’ve taken while in Edinburgh. Our tour guide, Robin, was full of historical knowledge of the cemetery and those that lay there. His knowledge and understanding of the cemetery was proficient enough to cater to his audience. He was funny, winsome and even had a book to share images and poems relevant to the graves. He even left us with a poem he wrote himself- VERY impressed! This tour was a 10 out of 10, we just wish it had been longer or we could book other tours with the same guide! It’d be like a personal Rick Steves teaching us! Our only regret? We didn’t have any cash on had to tip him at the end.

Our guide, Robin, was absolutely brilliant - super knowledgeable and passionate about the history behind the graveyard and Edinburgh city generally (and can point out the Harry Potter sites too)! My mum and I both had plenty of questions (being the literary and history nerds we are), and he was very happy to talk about them with us. The tour itself was really interesting, lots of brilliant stops, stories and laughs and I would really recommend going on this tour as I think its perfect mix of information and story-telling! Thank you again for the amazing afternoon :)

What a fantastic tour of Greyfriars Kirkyard. Robin was enormously entertaining and extremely knowledgeable. We are Edinburgh locals and we learnt so much! Really interesting to hear about the lives and stories of those who are buried there. Big shout out to Cousin David who provides such fantastic detail and background to some of the lesser known graves. What a wealth of information has been built up....there must be a book in there?!?
