Step inside with a local guide who’ll reveal tales of hardship and struggle in 18th-century Edinburgh, grisly stories from the city’s dark past, and lead you to a hidden witchcraft temple.

We booked onto the tour less than 24 hours in advance as we had enjoyed our experience at Mary Kings close the day before. This was definitely less touristy and more personal. We were a group of 6 in total making the experience even more enjoyable without the large groups usually gathered at tourist trails. Our guid was Markus ( I think I’ve spelt that right given he was Irish!) me and my partner could of listened to him talk all day! Brilliant knowledge of not just the vaults but areas around the royal mile as we made our way down!

Once inside there was a great eerie atmosphere which is great if that’s what you’re looking for. We were shown multiple vaults, each one with thier own stories and history. If you want to be scared then this one is for you. My partner opted to go inside a stone circle, he even laid down in it!! Let’s just hope nothing malevolent follows us back home.

Such an enjoyable and energetic hour, highly recommend you book this on your trip to the old town

We took our tour with Jorrrrrdan, not Jonathan as we were informed by Jordan ( funny guy ) at the start of the tour. Jordan managed to keep the group ( about 20 people) thoroughly entertained and amused, whilst being very informative as well. For the price, the 1 hr tour is a great insight into parts of the city’s history 10/10.

Thank you Joshua for making this tour very interesting and informative. We definitely learnt a lot about Edinburgh’s past and you made it extremely interesting and unforgettable and you were very enthusiastic, funny and engaging. We would definitely recommend this tour as it is a big part of Edinburgh’s past and you would not see it otherwise. Thanks again Josh and a Happy New Year. Best wishes Yogesh.

We booked this tour expecting a more historical approach to the Edinburgh vaults than some of the other tours which market themselves as ‘ghost’ tours. Unfortunately, this tour fell flat as both a historical and a ghost tour.

On the historical side, the facts given were entirely superficial. The tour guide spent most of the tour telling us that she’d later expand on the history without ever providing any meaningful insight into the goings on in the vault.

As far as it worked as a ghost tour, the guide never delved any deeper than telling us that there have been alleged paranormal occurrences. She explicitly said that the intention of the tour wasn’t to provide any jump scares but the lack of both horror and history left the tour without much content, particularly for its price.

Overall, we were left feeling that we could have had a better experience of the vaults by spending the hour at the underground pub next door.

As a history buff, being able to go in and see the vaults that individuals would live in hundreds of years ago was a fantastic experience. Stewart, our tour guide, was hilarious and made the tour very enjoyable. He informed us about the stories of numerous people that lived above and below the city and the eerie stories that visitors experienced staying in the vaults. I loved it, and I highly recommend the tour to anyone interested in the city's history, but be warned, it is pretty gruesome. I would definitely take it again :)

Very easy to book & meeting location was clear, the guide we had (Josh) was very friendly & enthusiastic, he pointed out a number of interesting & gruesome facts on the way to the vault. Once inside he checked regularly we were ok, it was dark & damp In places, and spoke for literally the whole time which in itself must be hard enough but gave interesting accounts of life in that era. We had been told about the vaults & had some time to kill before leaving Edinburgh that day so it was perfect for what we needed.

My husband & I decided to book the underground walking tour of Edinburgh to learn more about the city's history. Our tour guide, Anja, was great! She was engaging & informative regarding the history of the vaults. She stopped a few times along the tour to make sure everyone had caught up with the group & to provide tid bits of information along the way. I found the tour extremely interesting & enjoyed learning about the city's history and seeing a unique part of the city we otherwise wouldn't have been able to see.

A few recommendations for the tour. It took about 20-30 min to actually get to the vaults between walking and stopping for pieces of information. I felt this was to make the tour longer as the amount of time in the vaults is only about 30 min. With that being said, the vaults are dark and wet, with a musty smell so I think a whole 60 min would be overkill. All in all, if you are looking for a full 60 min tour of just the vaults, this tour is not for you.

Additionally, if you are having any mobility difficulties, this may not be the tour for you. We walked down a steep-ish hill to get to the vaults, had to step up a 24 inch step to get into the vaults, and walked up a flight of narrow steps. One of the vaults you enter had no lighting (I'm sure on purpose for dramatic effect), so if you are afraid in the pitch black, this tour may not be for you. The vaults are very creepy so if you get spooked easily, take caution.

Lastly, the tour departs on the Royal Mile but leaves you at the vaults. So be prepared that you will be stopping the tour in a different spot than when you left.

I would definitely recommend this tour but being mindful of the information listed above.

I brought my American friends on this tour as I had heard great things about it and it did not disappoint or I should say Frazer did not disappoint. He kept everyone gripped on his storytelling and was also able to lighten the mood with his charm and humour. Edinburgh city is full of beauty breathtaking views but it was great to learn of her darker colourings. Would thoroughly recommend if not for the spooky side, Frazers cheekbones and accent are more than worth it 😅

I was actually scared! It was a bit of a thill doing this tour. Our guide, Stewart, was very enthusiastic and seemed to have a wealth of stories to tell as we walked down the Royal Mile and through the vaults. He was a super guide who brought the past to life. My only criticism is that I could have done more as the time just vanished. Highly recommend doing this if you’re visiting Edinburgh for the first time as you learn things you would never know otherwise. Thank you Stewart.
P.S. I have repeated the stories I heard to our 14 year old son and he is now desperate to visit.
