- 123davidw0 contributionsCouples getaway.Marie was fantastic! She was a great guide, very knowledgeable and lovely personality. She was also very mindful of our safety on the entire tour.Written 8 December 2024
- Rhonda S0 contributionsA story telling tourMy daughter and I did the Hidden and Haunted Tour adults only. Be mindful adults only does not mean the stories will be more graphic or frightening, there are simply no children. Our guide, Marc, was a wonderful story teller and we enjoyed listening to him speak. However, the tour itself was fairly mundane. The group met and we stood for 15+ minutes and listened to the first monologue. Then we walked a few more minutes, stopped, and listened to our next monologue. Finally we proceeded to the underground and while interesting we had expected more of the dungeons. The company was very nice and the headsets were fantastic.Written 7 December 2024

- hannahcX9557LT0 contributionsGreat experienceOur tour guide Linda was fantastic, very knowledgeable with a great sense of humour. We were a group of 4 and all agreed this was our favourite tour of our 3 night stay. Well organised with clear meeting instructions. Very interesting to hear all about the history of the vaults. When we return to Edinburgh we would definitely book a tour through them again.Written 6 December 2024
- taram3480 contributionsReally Entertaining ExperienceFantastic storystelling from our guide! A nice peak into dark history, and this was a really good tour if you're into ghost stories. Personally I went into it expecting something different, but that was a fault on my part as we were actually looking for the Real Marys King Close. Either way, this was an enjoyable evening out and I really appreciated our guide.Written 4 December 2024

Our guide, Linda, was exceptional; friendly, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. She brought the fascinating history of the vaults to life with her storytelling. We can't recommend Mercat Tours - and Linda in particular - highly enough. A must-do for anyone visiting the city!Written 2 December 2024
- hoped7350 contributionsMartin is the best ghost guide!Martin was the best guide that we could have ever asked for. Despite the group only being my husband and myself, which honestly we loved! Martin was an amazing guide. He answered all of our questions and told us countless interesting facts along the way. When we got into the cellars, my husband heard a loud noise, come to find out it was one of the ghosts in the cellars. Martin will tell you which one it was and all about that specific ghost. While having our drinks at the end, Martin told us more stories and answered more questions that we had. Both my husband and myself wished that we booked this tour on the first night. We will defiantly be coming back to Edinburgh and booking a few more tours here. We did not know there were certain ones that are more child friendly, which was the one we went on. Needless to say, Martin is the absolute best guide that we could have ever asked for! He made this experience one that we will never forget!Written 2 December 2024

This was as much a history tour as ghost tour and was part overground. Booked this tour last minute and we absolutely loved it! Karis was our tour guide and she was amazing! She really drew us in with her storytelling and made our experience one of a kind. The size of the group was perfect. We will definitely be trying another Mercat Tour on our next trip to Edinburgh!

James Douglas. What a guy. He was our guide when we booked the vaults last week in Edinburgh. The man is an amazing tour guide. Was very interesting to hear the stories he told. Took us on a tour though Greyfriars Kirkyard to tell us the story about George Mackenzie, needs to say i was brickin it. Since there was a small group due to the covid restrictions, it made it easier for him to interact with the other couple on our tour. I would highly recommend James for another tour. Easily the best tour we did while in Edinburgh thanks to James.

We had Jared as our guide and he was fantastic - really enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It started above ground beside St Giles, with a story about a failed coup and subsequent (gruesome) execution of Walter Stewart. Then we proceeded down towards the vault with a couple of wonderful stories along the way,
The vaults were fascinating, and Jared provided a detailed history around what they were used for over the years - legitimately and otherwise! There have been ghost sightings in there, apparently Irish and Australian people seem to bring them out, but there was nothing forced or gimmicky about the tour.
There was a small museum collection at the end of the tour which was very interesting too. We loved it - highly recommended!

I went on the adults-only tour, and it did not disappoint: a short walk from the Mercat Cross to the Mercat Tours building and into their underground vaults giving about 7-10 stories along the way (depending on how you count stories as stops or the ones told at each stop).
Neave was our tour guide, and she did a fantastic job. What was exceptionally funny was when she told a story of someone falling to their death and then she dropped her microphone system and made a joke about how it was a visual representation of what happened to him. Absolutely perfect. She told stories that are not for the squeamish, and she told them with a macabre delight that was quite in character for the affair. Even better, she didn’t all and she only had a cloak for warmth over her period-appropriate clothes. She is great in the role.
The only thing I should mention is that on top of the vaults themselves, they actually pack you into a small room, so if you’re at all claustrophobic, stay away. I stood with my head against the slanted ceiling for about 10 minutes inside what was about the size of a huge brick oven. This is not for anyone with enclosed spaces issues.
Overall, a great tour made mostly by the guide. It is a short walk with stories—not much in the way of visuals other than a close and the vaults. Probably the least amount of walking I’ve ever done on what I thought was going to be a walking tour, so you should expect a series of stories, short walks, and a vault tour. Don’t choose this if you are looking to tour the city and hear stories about the local buildings—there are only a couple of those.

Highly recommend this informative and chilling tour of the underground vaults of Edinburgh. Our group was very lucky to have Michael as our tour leader. He made a point of greeting every attendee before the tour kicked off, and was extremely friendly. And once the tour commenced, wow. He was hilarious, animated, incredibly informative and created a ghostly, creepy atmosphere. The tour was the perfect length and I left having had the best experience and feeling as if I’d been immersed in 16th century Edinburgh. Book this one for sure, you will not be disappointed.

I’ve done quite a few ghost tours in Edinburgh, it’s a bit of a hobby. I thought this company were the top of all the firms offering them when I booked, based purely on what they told me I guess. I certainly expected to get the best ghost tour. Sadly I echo a lot of the lower rating reviews. We start by being told that we’ll be hearing facts. That is soon forgotten as we hear made up stories that start with the words, we imagine. There is far too much time spent on finding words for poo. Bizarre. If you’re going to give the presenter a script that they have to stick so slavishly to make sure they can pronounce the words.
All in all this was the most disappointing tour I’ve done yet and I’ve done the bus tour! I found it sad that the headphones cut us off from speaking to each other or having an immersive experience in the vaults. I found it sad you’re not bothered to speak to any of the guests, find out where they’re from, engage with them. Those are my favourite parts of these tours. This felt like a tour where you don’t care, you just want the money. I’ve been in these vaults before, many years ago, so I must have done your tours before . You seem to have moved far away from where you used to be because it’s whatever tour it was that I went on ten years ago that I hold up as the tour to beat all tours. Yet here we are. We’re on the tour to see the vaults. To hear ghost stories. To try and see a ghost.

Hi there, we're disappointed to hear that you didn't enjoy your tour the second time around, though we always like the chance to learn what we can do better. We can assure you that though they may sound outlandish at times, the stories on our tours are all rooted in the true history of Edinburgh—we are a history tour company at our heart, after all!
Each tour does have set routes and stories to help visitors choose what suits them best, though we encourage our team to use their own personality and flair to make each tour unique—no script here! While most visitors rate us five-stars, we understand that tastes vary and that our tours (especially as they adapt and change over time) may not be for everyone.
If you'd like to provide us with more details on your experience, we'd love to hear from you at info@mercattours.com.
We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your time in Edinburgh, and please don't hesitate the contact us with any further comments.
All the best,
Lindsay

I am so glad I signed up for this tour, it was a great way to end my trip to Scotland. It was spooky, fun and our tour guide “Michael” was fantastic! He told us some gross history of Scotland, some tragic stories of people who once were and of course about some ghosts! The way he delivered each story really allowed you to visualize what he was saying. It was all really well done, and I wish I had more time to do another tour with them!

I would highly recommend going on one of these tours whilst visiting Scotland. We were very impressed and entertained with the ghost tour we went on and would like to come back and do one of their other historic tours. Our tour guide Ross was THE BEST. You can tell that he loves his job because of the passion he has for the storytelling and he did it quite well because I’m still haunted by the woman in black in the corner!!!! Very memorable and informative experience!!
