About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- T6606RBdanielo0 contributionsRomanyicWhilst planning a romantic break with my partner, we decided to go to Derry instead of Paris. Thankfully , we made a great choice. The streets were vibrant from the moment we arrived, full of flower sellers and street performers as we walked hand in hand to the best restaurant we could imagine. We did get confused by the road signs. As the sun went down over the foyle, we wished the day could never end I couldn’t recommend Derry more.Written 13 October 2024

- ellentuffy0 contributionsExcellent experience with tour guide JohnThis tour was everything I wanted and more! The tour guide John has personal ties to Bloody Sunday, which made his retelling of the history of the Troubles in Derry all the more authentic and enhanced the whole experience. He also could answer any questions and was very friendly and funny. 10/10 experience!Written 23 September 2024
- 321jeannes0 contributionsThe best way to learn about The Troubles. A top part of our trip to IrelandJohn was our tour guide and he did a fantastic job. He did a wonderful job describing living through the troubles and providing both an historical and personal perspective. I was also struck by how many people he knew - every few minutes someone shouted out hello or shared a few words. This is his town, his people... and he loves them. I learned so much.Written 22 September 2024
- carolinesQ4816AF0 contributionsAn interesting tourThe talk was from someone who was present when the British Paras entered Derry which was invaluable. However, no headphones and often difficult to hear as busy road. I think £10 would be a better price because we only walked a few yards and I could not hear some of it - see above.Written 22 September 2024

- Resort427215804540 contributionsPleasant and informativeOur tour guide, Mr McKinney, was excellent! I knew the general story, but he made it real and gave details that were new to me. Also, he was just a lovely person.Written 4 September 2024
- MikeW29980 contributionsA thought provoking tour.A different side to a complex and poignant story. Our guide Noel, had participated in the events at the age of 16 and a lot of his friends were killed, beaten and imprisoned & he himself was beaten with a baton and made to run a gauntlet of batons. And yet he told the story calmly and with great knowledge & authority. The area is quite small but filled with memorials and murals telling the story and at the end, a visit to the Free Derry museum is a must.Written 28 August 2024
- D9629UOpetej0 contributionsRiveting Tour of the Bloody Sunday Massacre SiteThis was an outstanding tour led by a man named John, the brother of one of the 14 victims of the Bloody Sunday Massacre. Walking over the same ground where this atrocity occurred while hearing of John's personal account of the events of that day and also while visiting the murals which documented that day made for a memorable event which I will never forget. It was very humbling to be in John's presence. He was more than willing to share his personal experience and was very willing to answer all of our questions.Written 24 August 2024
- marksyt0 contributionsPhenomenal tour about Bloody Sunday and push for civil rightsThe tour by John was a remarkable experience. He has a personal connection to Bloody Sunday and freely shares his experiences, providing a unique insight into what life was like in the Bogside during The Troubles. He is also very much up to date on legal struggles still going on now, in the 2020s. Cannot recommend this tour enough. If you want to learn about the conflict in Northern Ireland, this tour is a must.Written 24 August 2024

A fantastic insight into life living in and the history of the Bogside in Derry was provided by John. He was an extremely nice guy and down to earth. His first hand knowledge of Bloody Sunday and other events that took place in Derry during the Troubles made for a very good day. We would highly recommend John and this walking tour if you want to get a full insight into the Troubles. Thanks again John, also say hi to the painter for us! Hopefully he’ll have the wall painted by sometime next week! 😂

The Bloody Sunday Walking Tour is well worth it. The murals are power enough on their own, but my tour guide, John, gave context and personal anecdotes that you’d never get walking around on your own. I highly recommend it.

A very impactful and moving account of what happened on Bloody Sunday, and wonderful walking tour of Free Derry. Not only did John tell the story of Bloody Sunday, he took the time to explain the history and politics of Northern Ireland, as well as the artwork that can be seen on the various buildings and walls in the area. I will recommend this tour to anyone I know who will be visiting Northern Ireland in the future and will remember it for a very long time. Thank you again, John, for an unforgettable experience.

This was an up close tour of one of the most devastating days in the last 100 years of the country.
John is deeply knowledgeable about the facts surrounding the events and intimately aware of the tragic impacts on families and the decades of work the families had to undertake to achieve any measure of justice.
He was happy to dig into any areas of interest and deliver and forensic analysis of any moment from the day. Hard to think it could be better done.

This was an amazing tour. John was so informative and conveyed the information in a way that was easily understandable. He also made sure to answer all of my questions. It was a surreal experience for me to learn details of Bloody Sunday through someone who was so directly affected by it. Highly recommend this tour.

John McKinney is an inspiration. He and other family members of the Bloody Sunday tragedy have made it their life’s work to hold accountable those who attempted to cover up the atrocities committed that day. Powerful experience to hear him speak in a deeply involved, yet collected tone about this heart-wrenching event.

Our guide, John, took us back to those terrible times and totally immersed us in the heartbreaking events of Bloody Sunday; we were moved to tears. John's personal connection to that day allowed him to impart to us his extensive knowledge of the Troubles in the most engaging way, and his passion for justice shone through. Thank you John, for such an incredible and moving insight into Derry's history.

Finally made this tour today.
John McKinney was our tour guide. He was excellent.
This tour will make you emotional & angry. John takes you through the background of how we arrived at Bloody Sunday & the aftermath, & brings you up to date to current day. He also patiently answered any queries from us
I’m not sure “enjoy” is the correct word to use about the tour , but this is one I would recommend 100% to anyone. It’s excellent. If you are thinking about it, do it.

It was very emotional listening to John's account of the events of Bloody Sunday; what happened to his older brother - William McKinney - and the subsequent fight for justice. The tour lasted 1.5 hours and I only wished it was longer. I would recommend the walk to anyone. It was the highlight of my trip to Derry.
Thanks John.
Thanks John.
