Brilliant daytime tour for locals and tourists alike
Dorian's tour is the perfect blend of horrifying history and hilarity. I booked the tour when searching for something touristy to do with friends from further afield. We all had such a brilliant time, and I learnt loads of grisly new stories about my home city. The tour is inclusive, with headphones allowing you to set your own pace and to hear and focus on what the guide is saying (even in the busiest parts of York on a Saturday afternoon). Would highly recommend!

    Spooky walk during a dark
It was a good way to get to know York differently. Dr. Dorian Deathly was a very entertaining, friendly and knowledgable guide with many great, funny historical tales. We bought a tickets online for £12. Our 90 minutes tour started at 6pm. It was a group over 20 people. We really enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend it!

    10/10, entertaining, inclusive
Incredibly interesting, was great to learn about the true grimy and grisly past of York and incredibly inclusive, with wireless headphones it allowed my hard of hearing partner be able to listen in the hustle and bustle of york. The music between locations made it feel like we were on and adventure.

    Interesting and funny tour.
A great walking tour. I really enjoyed this walking tour with Dorian. He's very knowledgeable about York and he told us many stories both funny and grotesque that I guarantee you will not hear on a standard walking tour. Definitely worth doing if you want an entertaining alternative tour of York.

    Great tour experience
Great tour with Dorian. Professional as always with great sense of humour. Highly recommended. A history lesson on the dark side. Just as good as the ghostly tours which I would also highly recommend

    Excellent experience
Amazing experience, well paced and always entertaining. Funny and informative and it was brilliant overall. Recommend for anyone in York, for a few days or residents. Takes you to places both in and out of the hustle and bustle, but the headphone experience is clear and keeps the entertainment going even in the busiest portions. All around excellent. A mother, teenage daughter and adult son had a blast and the hour or so flew by!

    Great tour!
What a great tour! The headset angle made it simultaneously more casual and more intimate, and it was much easier navigating the busy streets when you don’t have to worry about being able to hear the tour guide! The tour itself was fascinating, with the right balance of humour with the darker aspects. 10/10 would recommend!

    Very awesome day out! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I went on this tour with my friend (both 16) as we’d been on the other ghost tour that you run previously, we had a great time!! The stories were so interesting and covered all sorts of topics like robberies, witchcraft, murders and fraud. The way you delivered the stories was so captivating and was so easy to enjoy. The tour itself was great, using headsets was very useful as usually in the summer holidays, a tour would be very hard to hear… The medieval rendition of pop music in between stories was an awesome addition to the tour. If i could, I would go on this tour again and again and again. Very highly recommend!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Obsessed!
Absolutely loved this tour, I've never done one with headphones before and I now think they should always be like that, it makes hearing the guide easy and I was less distracted by things around me. I am obsessed with true crime and this fed my obsession, I am now obsessed with historical Yorkshire True Crime and also medieval remixes of pop songs (IYKYK) Dorian is a legend, we saw him on a ghost tour before and definitely didn't stalk him online forever! Got a discount code so might go again with family.

    Time very well spent
We had a very enjoyable time the guide who took us around the city was very entertaining and extremely knowledgeable regarding past events on York. The headphones were an added bonus as you could hear everything that was being said and you didn’t miss anything.

    True Crime Fun Times
Another brilliant tour from the Deathly Dark team. We join them for a ghost tour every time we're in York, so when they announced this new tour we booked right away. York is a very busy place in the day, so the use of the headphones is a great idea. The sound quality was amazing, like listening to a podcast! The music between the stops really made the walks between stops fun. The tour is true crime based, very factual and engaging. The guide has clearly gone above and beyond on the research. Get this booked, you won't be disappointed!

This was a great tour. It involved the use of headphones to clearly hear what the guide said and also this was good as it made the tour very atmospheric. Some great stories and learnt so much more about York. The guide was excellent good and so knowledgeable. Would recommend this tour to anybody visiting York or already live there.

    Grimly fascinating and utterly entertaining.
Do you fancy something different to a ghost tour? Do you find the streets of York after dark just too creepy? Are you interested in a different take on York's gruesome past? Then this is the tour for you. Our enigmatic guide met us on a very hot and sunny day and handed out headsets, through which he told us lots of gruesome and grisly tales of murders and evil deeds from the past, whilst guiding us around the bustling streets with ease. We learnt new tales, saw unseen sights and were thoroughly entertained. The tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and involves a fair bit of walking (all flat though York's streets are notoriously bumpy), although with plenty of rest stops. Our horror-loving 13 yo enjoyed it very much, I would say it is suitable for ages 12 upwards. The experience of wearing the headsets really makes it very atmospheric as you feel slightly removed from the tourist bustle of York's streets, and the "bard-core" music played in between tales is most entertaining. Another fantastic experience from the Deathly Dark family, if you enjoy this then give their evening ghost tour a try also-it's the best in York!

My husband and I joined Mr Deathly’s ghost tour around York tonight and had a brilliant time. I’ve lived in York for 18 years and yet found myself on streets I’ve never seen before, with a great range of tales of disease, death, murder, tragic accidents and ghostly goings on. He is super knowledgeable as a tour guide, and entertaining and funny as he presents all of the stories to the group. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting York, or local residents who want to see the city from a different perspective.

We had a great time on Dorian Deathly's tour this evening! I moved to York a few months ago and had been meaning to do a walking tour, and this one was everything I could have hoped for and more. We saw lots of locations without it feeling like too much of a trek, and I learned a lot about my new home. There was a good mix of spooky, historic and humorous content and I appreciated Dorian's sense of humour. He's a really engaging performer and I felt like the tour was a great value for money socially distanced activity. We didn't encounter any ghosts but I did get a slight fright when I spotted a Danny DeVito cut-out in a window near the Golden Fleece pub...

What an absolute joy this tour is! Dorian is clearly passionate about York and the stories that he tells about the city.

We've done half a dozen ghost walks in the city, and they all have something to offer. Dorian's dry delivery as he tells tales of tragedy works wonderfully.

Some ghost tours can be a little light on information, maybe just stopping outside a building to say "there's a ghost in here".

Dorian has dug up the history of what happened, the awful accidents that took place, and how that resulted in the spirit. It all flows wonderfully, and he is one of the best storytellers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Is it scary? That's on you. There aren't any gimmicks, nobody wearing a mask waiting to jump out the shadows. Just good storytelling. For my wife and I, we were both genuinely unsettled by a story told outside an old church in deathly pitch darkness. Five minutes later we were howling as we were told how to kill a man with a chocolate orange.

Book this tour, you won't regret it.

As a final note, it must be incredibly stressful to operate a walking tour in the covid world. The group was large, but within guidelines and the instructions were clearly and easy to follow with the occasional humorous reminder to "never rub your bubble against a strangers bubble."

This was our first tour of this type in York. My daughter booked this as part of my wife’s 50th Birthday weekend celebrations. She did a lot of research on line & this tour came up top…for good reasons! Our young guide, Danty Deathly, was brilliant, very theatrical & he really created the mood from the outset, but his humour throughout made the entire tour even more enjoyable. The route is very cleverly chosen. Our tour was on a Saturday evening on the first weekend of the Christmas Market, so the city centre was heaving. However, the locations were all quiet & allowed Danty to ‘perform’ without distraction to him or the group, which was quite large. The stories were interesting & delivered faultlessly & with flare. The tour lasted around an hour & fifteen minutes & covered an area in the city centre, Shambles, The Minster & Clifford’s Tower. Overall, now knowing the cost, this was massively value for money & I would recommend to all who are thinking of doing a York ghost tour.

Having watched Dorian Deathly's online exploits throughout lockdown, we decided Halloween week was the right time to go on one of his IRL walking tours, taking our 9yo with us. From the offset the whole tour felt safe with all the group sticking in their bubbles. The streets of York were busy with other tours, people hunting for mini ghosts and a protest near the minster, Dorian took all of this in his long stride, guiding us to quieter spots without a hitch. As a long time York resident, and veteran of several ghost tours over the years, I was very pleasantly surprised to hear some tales that were new to me. The tour was absolutely suitable for younger audience members, with a good mix of spooks, history, humour and grossness (which my son found particularly funny.) I would absolutely recommend this for families, my son was rather taken with the little badge and mini tea light all the children were given to make them feel safe, a very nice touch.

Picture it: a cold, dark, wet & windy late January evening; 40 or 50 intrepid souls gather in a quiet side street of York's labyrinthine old quarter, combined only by their communal inquisitive spirits (yes its a pun) and a love of the macabre. Dorian shepherded the throng with a whimsical, witty, well rehearsed welcome, then lead the seething throng onwards, for a further 90 minutes (or so) of history & mystery.

Two adults, and two 17 year olds, thoroughly enjoyed the tour, but would recommend layering up for the evening, especially around the minster, as the wind was whipping through us all!

This was a fantastic way to get to know some areas of this beautiful city that you might not find in the usual guide books.

10/10 on content and delivery. Only 9/10 for the weather though ;)

Oof what a review! Thank you very much, hopefully one day I will master the power of weather control, but for now I will just embrace mother nature's cold, northern love.

We have visited York many times but as a Covid birthday meant no party we decided to take on a ghost tour. Dorian’s tour was the right amount of gore and ghost to sustain the audience for 1 1/2 hours - even our kids at 16,12 and 7. They kept up with the history and humour and it was good to see someone with a passion for the history as well as keeping the crowd enthralled. We knew bits and pieces of specialist history but feel much more informed now. Well worth the money and a superb ‘back door history’ to some of the lesser known areas of York. He won’t disappoint. We loved our tour tonight. (Despite kids being embarrassed at my loud scream!!!! And laughter) Many thanks.

It must be said that the evenings spent in front of my computer listening to Dorian and Mrs D telling Tales from the Fireplace during the looooong Spring and Summer of 2020, actually helped me survive the lockdowns. (I've had to choose one month when I engaged with the Deathly Dark Tours, in 2020, but in reality it was from February through to Christmas.)

I live alone and was keeping myself [and others] safe, by self-isolating as much as possible. It was quite depressing. I missed my friends and being a part of get-togethers, so much. In virtually joining Mr and Mrs D, I felt connected to the rest of the world in a weird but very nice way, especially when Dorian read out two of my own ghost stories, on two different occasions. You wouldn't believe the boost it gave me. It made me feel like I was still a part of the world.

I also loved the virtual ghost walks, and am intrigued enough to want to come to York and take the tour in person... Love his sense of humour!

Whether you are a York resident or a visitor, Dorian Deathly’s tour is for you. We were treated to 90 minutes of interesting facts and dark snap shots of history from all over the city centre. Well blended with gallows humour (no pun intended) and a wonderful flowing interaction with the wide ranging audience made this a treat. We enjoyed every minute.

It is no wonder this tour has won awards, it's by far the best tour I've been on. Dorian Deathly clearly knows his material and has a passion for the subject that comes through with every spooky tale he tells.

Starting in a dimly lit, cobbled Grape Lane, the tour party is led through York's streets, past the Minster (or the ‘Metropolitical Church and Cathedral of Saint Peter in York’ as we were told is the correct name), along the famous Shambles, and through some of the alleys (or ‘snickleways’) stopping along the route for ghostly stories, gruesome histories and humorous anecdotes.
Mr Deathly’s captivated audience is taken from laughing out loud to cringing at tales of pigeon poultices and plague-ridden buboes, each element building on the tale being woven. It is difficult to go into any more detail without giving away spoilers and this really is a tour to be experienced in person.
With a route that is adapted to avoid construction (such as the current restoration work on Clifford’s Tower) or hot-spots for ‘trouble banter’, this is a tour that can be returned to on subsequent visits to York, and I am sure there will be new tales added, or others included that were omitted (we were even given a choice of story in one location), so that each tour will be different.

The round of applause at the end of the tour was very well deserved, if you’re heading to York add this tour to your itinerary, you won’t be disappointed.
