The best way to visit the Cañada de la Virgen is with an expert guide. Along the way, Albert will share his knowledge of cultures of the Bajio region, including the Otomi people and other Mesoamerican cultures. After visiting the Welcome Center, we will walk a total of approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) together, taking the same path as the ancients. Albert will show you recent discoveries at the archaeological site and you’ll be able to climb to the top of the pyramid. Along the way, you will see the impressive landscapes as your mind goes on a journey. You will leave with a more thorough knowledge of this wonderful, historical site.

Outstanding experience, no visit to San Miguel de Allende is complete without this incredible, educational tour to the archaeological site, Canada de la Virgin. Albert is a trained archeologist who impacts his knowledge with deep insight and a bit of humor.

Mr. Coffee is an outstanding guide with firsthand knowledge of the excavation of this site and this tour was one of the best archeological tours I’ve taken. He crams in a lot of information on this tour and his talks are riveting. He has an exceptional command of the history and archeology of the area. Really whet my appetite to read more about the history and archeology of meso-America, and he graciously provided a reading list by email after the tour.

Cañada de La Virgen archaeologist-led tour.
Albert Coffee Archaeotours is definitely the way to go. We gained and learned so much knowledge we otherwise wouldn’t have known if we just went ourselves. Who better to give a tour than someone who was actually a part of the excavation back in 2004 and is an archeologist. Albert is very friendly, knowledgeable and detailed when it comes to giving the tour. We very much enjoyed his tour and 100% recommend it to anyone and everyone! Thank you so much Al!

Mezoamerican region extended north via this pyramid!
Archaeologist Albert Coffee is passionate, articulate & clearly an expert on this site. He explained how historians thought “mezo-American” pyramids only existed further south in Mexico & Central America until this great pyramid (& now others) was found on private land in 1995. Private tours have been allowed since 2011. Be prepared for lots of walking up & down hill in this lovely (usually arid) natural canyon area. Definitely enjoyed the experience& worthwhile, educational tour!

La Canada de la Virgen tour - don't miss it!
Albert had completed his graduate studies in anthropology when he first came to San Miguel de Allende in 2004 and has lived here ever since. He volunteered with the Mexican government's archeologists during the excavation. He keeps up with the latest theories and science about the original inhabitants of this fascinating area. His presentation is funny and knowledgeable. A must-see in San Miguel if you have any interest in who lived here in the centuries before the Conquest.

      Endearing and knowledgeable
Albert is very personable and sooooo knowledgeable about the site, the history and culture in general. It is definitely worth taking this tour - you get an insight you wouldn’t be able to get by yourself or from any other guide. We also had the pre-Hispanic lunch option afterwards that was delicious and learnt a lot about the astronomy as well from Rosanna. A must do in San Miguel de Allende

Don't Forget Your Coffee at the Pyramid!
I was told that if I went to the pyramids, there was one man to do it with -- Albert Coffee. Excellent and knowledgeable tour guide and the jokes were delivered just how I like a Martini...nice and dry! The site is quiet and we practically had it to ourselves. Uninterrupted views of the countryside abounded. If you can navigate the myriad of uneven stairs and cobblestones of San Miguel, you will be able to handle walking around this pyramid. Afterwards I opted in for the traditional lunch. The menu (that rotates) included a variety of dishes using some of the ingredients we saw in the gardens on the tour and the highlight was a dish of rabbit! Great company, and afterwards Dr. Rossana Ennis described her work studying the lunar and solar patterns around the pyramid. A great complement to Albert's tour. Thanks so much!

This was definitely worthwhile. Nothing better than having a real professional take you around a site like this, and Albert Coffee is a pro. Highly recommend stopping for lunch at the astronomic/gastronomic restaurant as well

This turned out to be the highlight of our trip to SMA. Albert set us up to tour Cañada de la virgin with Dr. Rossana Quiroz, one of the key archeologists that excavated the site. With a gleam in her eye she took us back in time, enthusiastically answered our questions and tickled our curiosity with the mysteries of the site. What happened to the people that built this giant astronomical device? How was it possible for the mummy that was buried at the top to predate the site by a thousand years?

We heard about this experience from a local we happened to start talking to after a barre class (also great and would recommend). She insisted it was a MUST-SEE and we are so glad we listened to her. The history, mythology, and architecture of the site were incredible, and all the information was easily digested and understood thanks to our great guide Albert Coffee (who also was highly recommended).

A follow student arranged this trip on my final full day in San Miguel de Allende. I have to admit after a month of exploring every nook and cranny I was a touch reluctant. That would have been a huge lapse in judgement.

This tour was brilliant. From being picked up by José on the bus to our return it was excellent.

I cannot say enough about our host/guide Albert. This guy knows his stuff, which is understandable. He however, was able to talk for a few hours and keep it interesting and informative, which is a real skill. He did a great justice to the history and culture of the people who called this place home centuries ago.

It was a great hike and the pace was just right throughout the morning.

At this point masks are required on the site, which I was quite comfortable with and hand sanitizer was also in use.

One tip that perhaps was not too clear is bags of any kind are not allowed. Not a big deal if you plan accordingly.

A few people I spoke to, didn’t want to join me on this tour as they had been to other pyramids in Mexico. They missed out! Albert was by far the most knowledgeable guide on the pyramids I have come across. Although he has done this tour over 4,000 times, his presentation was excellent, with well placed humour to break up the density of information he was providing. Recent and remote history was provided, along with local customs and medicinal use of many indigenous plants. I was glad that I went. As an added unexpected bonus, there was a family serving delicious gorditas and tacos at the end, for the low price of 30 pesos each… I recommend this tour without hesitation.

My wife and I joined an archaeological tour led by Albert Coffee of the Canada de La Virgin Pyramid. The trip couldn’t have been better. We were picked up at 11:00 am by an air conditioned van and driven to the museum where we met Albert. We joined him on another van and drove to the site while he explained what we would see. We walked about a mile to the pyramid, toured the site and walked back. Albert finished by taking us to the museum to show us artifacts.

We then went back to town and arrived at 4:00. The day was perfect for us. Albert is extremely knowledgeable and he has photos from the original dig to provide you a really excellent “before and after” context. We highly recommend this trip.

You must experience the site with Albert Coffee. He is not just a guide — but one of the archeologists who has worked this site for many years. Who knew there were pyramids this far north in Mexico? Find out why. Find out how this site lines up with the rest of the country and the skies.

The hike was great fun. Easy. You don’t realize how much you’re learning and retaining because it’s not only interesting and highly informative, but fun and thoroughly enjoyable. Never a lag and never a dull moment with Albert. You will instantly know how much he loves the area and what he does best — entertain and educate.

This was a small, manageable tour of 14 led by Albert Coffee, an archaeologist who had actually worked on some of the excavation. He knows his stuff! It is a good paced tour with a lot of information, so he speaks pretty fast. It is truly mind boggling of what these ancient peoples knew and accomplished. He spices up his tour with humor and keeps it very interesting. You will not be able to bring any sort of purse or bag into the site, and they are pretty strict about that. Highly recommend this tour!

To start with the good, Albert Coffee is extremely knowledgable about this area. Unfortunately he wants to impart all this knowledge. He speaks very reapidly and has a "canned speech" (un discurso enalatada). So much so, that very little can be retained. I have taught many courses and I know that the important facts muct be stressed and the unimportnat can be mentioned briefly. Albert does not seem to know this. If he is interupted for a questions, he will answer it and then repeat the last part of his canned speech (word for word) until he gets to the part where he left off. By the end of it, I no longer could pay attention and was glad to get away from him.

Albert met us at the site. The bus driver who took us to the site was very nice
