This museum gives an excellent presentation of the history of Macau. The setting itself is impressive, as it is built into the fortress. The displays cover every period, including World War II, during which Macau was not occupied by the Japanese, a commonly unknown fact.

Displays are arranged in chronological order and logically laid out. There are many fine displays that you can walk through, reproduction of Macanese buildings, lots of information, and you can easily spend a few hours here. You might even be given a fun exam at the end of the musuem tour, with a very nice prize for passing it at the end.

The bookstore and musuem shop are also surprisingly impressive. The bookstore carries a wide variety of books, offering plenty of history and different points of view. You can include the museum on a walking tour of the historic center. The bonus is that you get plenty of exercise walking up the steps to the entrance! This was a fine example of the cultural and artistic side of Macau.
