A must for people of all ages is the PortAventura Theme Park. It was formerly part of the Universal Parks & resorts, theme park division of NBCUniversal, but this link was dropped in 2005. It is just a short distance from the centre of Salou (The noddy train will take you there) and is one hour from Barcelona. The theme park is part of a resort which consist of a major theme park, water park, four hotels and a convention centre.

The park is divided into countries - Mediterrania, Polynesia, China, Mexico, and the Far West.

The park's theme until recently has only consisted of different countries, but now includes a children's area called SesamoAventura.

Mediterrania is the main entrance area of the park, it features two rides but there are several restaurants and shops reproducing a typical coastal town in Catalonia. The area is home to the Firework show during the summer called FiestAventura when the park opens until midnight. The area is home to a popular ride called Furius Baco a intamin accelerator roller coaster.

Polynesia is home to a major water ride called tutuki splash and a 4D theatre. The area also includes shows.

China is home to the biggest ride in the park - Dragon Khan, with 8 inversions this is one of the most thrilling rides in Europe. Even out of season the queues can be very long.

Mexico includes popular ride called Hurakan Condor, which is a freefall ride operated by a cable lift and the other popular attraction is the Temple del fuego, which is a walkthrough attraction with a high level of pyrotechnics.

Far West has 9 attractions which makes it the biggest area in the park, these include: water rides; Silver River Flume and Grand Canyon Rapids. The two roller coasters are: Stampida - This dueling Wooden roller coaster is the second largest roller coaster in the park. Tomahawk is a junior version of Stampida.

SesamoAventura is new for 2011, the theming is based on the TV series sesame street and is therefore catered for children.

The admission rates are comparable with most theme parks but there are special offers to be had if you book online.  There are reduced rates if you also want to visit the Water Park (PortAventura Aquatic Park). There are also evening rates from 7pm-midnight during the summer check calender and rates on the website for exact information.
