Fall Getaway: Minnesota Apple Orchards

Think that outdoor activities are limited to the warm summer months? Wrong!! Minneapolis is a hotbed for fall activities. The mild temperatures, cerulean skies and flaming leaf-filled backdrop draw the perfect conditions for a getaway or outdoor activity.

One of the most beloved autumn weekend activities is apple picking. Apples are indigenous and abundant in Minnesota. Here, it’s obvious that apples are cherished and celebrated. Not only does the University of Minnesota dedicate a whole department to the propagation and research of these crisp, red delicacies, but the number of orchards match the number of researchers.

In total, there are more than 60 orchards in Minnesota — many of which have something to write home about. Minnesota Harvest 40 miles outside of Minneapolis, in Jordan, Minn. was recently ranked by USA Today within the “Top 10 great places to pick your own apples” offer more than 75 award-winning and salivation-worthy apple varieties. Afton Apples, Aamodt’s Apple Farm, Pine Tree Apple Orchard and Apple Jack Orchards are other prize-winning Twin Cities orchards worth a trip.

Sight, sound, touch and taste are all incorporated into the mix when you stroll an orchard: You can search acres of apple trees, canter horse-bound through trails, get lost in corn mazes, listen to apple-loving experts talk about varieties and history of the apple industry and taste delicious apples and other apple-medlied foods. And— the best part— these activities appeal to every age from 1-100.
