The stately capital of the Yucatan is a classic colonial city with impressive buildings, a beautiful boulevard modelled on the Champs d'Elysées, a seaside retreat (Progreso) and a plethora of small colonial towns, Mayan villages, ruins and renovated haciendas within easy reach. Hire a car or catch a white colectivo van between sites. Visit the Anthropology and History Museum, 17th-century Hacienda Yaxcopoil and the ruins of the Maya city Uxmal, or unwind at the Spa at Hacienda Xcanatun.
