Set in limestone that predates the dinosaurs, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is full of archeological treasures, from fossilized prehistoric plant and animal life to Ice Age native artifacts. The 113 caves beneath the surface of the Chihuahuan Desert above feature massive speleothems and chambers accessible by guided tour or self-guided for the seasoned spelunker. Above ground the park is a beautiful setting for backcountry hiking or watching bats migrate in the summer dusk.
