We went to Achill island, Co Mayo in late November 2010 for a weekend trip. It turned out to be the weekend with the most snow on the Irish soil! But we had the best time ever on Achill Island and really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in the Richview Hostel in Keel, a hostel with rustic charm. Dependent on the weather we were unable to cruise along the famous Atlantic Drive, as Achill, as the rest of the 'mainland' has no real winter services. We mainly stayed in Keel, Doogort and Dooagh and enjoyed the winterwonderland along the scenic beaches and the mountains. Achill is such a beautiful island and I am really looking forward seeing it in spring again. If you are looking for a remote place, pure nature, stunning views, Achill is the place for you! And there is so much to do hill walking, swimming, painting, horse back riding, cycling, fishing, traditional Irish music sessions, archaeological monuments... countless...the only minus is that you really need a car to explore the island or at least a bike.
