If you're looking for a noisy, busy holiday with activities going on until all hours, this place isn't for you; however, if you are seeking relaxation, peace and the pleasure of being truly indulged, you must stay at the Plantacion. We found it after several hours of trawling online and put our trust in Thomson (with whom we had stayed at the Sensatori in Crete and had a wonderful holiday) .. and were delighted.
We travelled with our daughters (19 and 17) and had two Junior Suites, which are large, well-equipped, comfortable suites with a huge bathroom, a dressing/boot room, living room, two flat-screen TVs, and a balcony with three chairs and a table. The air-conditioning was perfect and the wifi throughout the hotel was a bonus. It can be a bit flaky in the early evening but hey! It's free!
The pools are delightful and there are lots of sun-loungers available. Of course there are the sad people who feel the need to reserve seats several hours before they actually come down to occupy them, but luckily plenty of seats remain free to accommodate pretty much everyone else. Loos by the pool are clean and there are also showers and lockers.
The beach is about 10-15 minutes' walk down the hill. It doesn't belong to the hotel so you take your chances with renting sun-loungers and umbrellas with everyone else, but we had no problem when we went down....If you're looking for a noisy, busy holiday with activities going on until all hours, this place isn't for you; however, if you are seeking relaxation, peace and the pleasure of being truly indulged, you must stay at the Plantacion. The beach is about 10-15 minutes' walk down the hill. It doesn't belong to the hotel so you take your chances with renting sun-loungers and umbrellas with everyone else, but we had no problem when we went down. There are clean toilet facilities and plenty of cafes and restaurants on the prom, so you can find everything from an ice cream to a three course meal within a few minutes' stroll. There are also the usual water sports like paragliding, banana boats, waterskiing etc. The walk up the hill to the hotel after a beach day is a little tiring, but think how your legs are benefiting from the exercise!
Also at the base of the hill is a terrific shopping centre (the Plaza del Duque) where you can get everything from designer clothes through pharmacy items to bottles of water at the Hiper Dino supermarket on the lower floor. Naturally the hotel charges an arm and a leg for basics such as water so it's as well to stock up on your first day. You will pay no more there than you would at Tesco, and for wine it'll be quite a lot less.
Food and drink at the hotel are outstanding. We went on a half board basis and the breakfast and dinner are just amazing. There's a different them each evening but the favourites are always there. You can order lunch at the pool bar or the poolside restaurant if you find yourself peckish in the middle of the day.
We did Thomson's "Teide by Night" excursion to watch the sun set by the volcano, and I'd suggest you don't miss it .. truly a brilliant experience, even if you do spend rather a long time on the coach on the way there and back.
(KEIRA if you're reading this, Andrew lives in BRENTWOOD!!)
Staff at the hotel are friendly, helpful and efficient. Room service is 99% great although you sometimes have to ask for clean glasses because they escape notice some days. We had a problem with the door on our safe and a technician was despatched quickly to sort it out.
The spa looks glorious but I can't review it because we didn't use it. Ditto the hairdresser.
My husband and elder daughter used the gym and found it well equipped but under air conditioned .. in stark contrast to the rest of the hotel .. and it did spoil their exercise somewhat.
We walked down to the prom a couple of evenings and found several nice bars where you can enjoy a cocktail watching the sun set. It's worth going to Playa de las Americas which has great nightlife (including a Hard Rock Cafe) and good shopping, as well as a pleasant walk along the front. There are nightclubs galore for anyone fancying a more intense night's entertainment.
All in all, I would strongly recommend this hotel - we will certainly be returning sometime soon.
