“the best staff & great spa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2009

I was a delegate representing the US in the United Nation System International Pageant . I stayed at this hotel from July 19-26, 2009. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. I had a garden view room that was very nice and comfortable. There is not much activity at night. Taxi rides or overprice to just go a short distance. However, the hotel provides a free shuttle to a shopping area about 5 minutes from the hotel. This is not a hotel for people who want nightlife and constant activity. It is a relaxing hotel for those who need quiet time. The spa and its services are wonderful. The main reason I would return again is simply because of the staff. I found the staff to be very friendly , attentive and helpful. They were never too busy to help or answer a question.

“The Beach Sucks!”

The hotel was fine although a little out of the way. The beach was terrible. We needed to wear our shoes to get in and out, very small smin area and very rough. We spent just one night after coming from beautiful beaches in Negril and Ocho Rios. Was a disappointment. This hotel has no character and we will not be staying there for our next trip to Jamaica.

“Not as Ritzy as you would expect!”

The hotel is trying to live up the reputation of the name but falls way short. The food was overpriced and not very good. Especially avoid the White Witch at the Rose Hall Country Club - it was lousy! The best was the $32 buffett in the morning. The beach is very rocky and small and only good for sunbathing. They only provide over priced cabs, for example $US 25 each way for the 15 minute ride to downtown Montego Bay and $10 each way to go to Scothies jerk spot if you want to get some reasonable priced food. Our room had ants and spiders and we called every day to report it and never were we offered a room change. We eventually discovered they were spraying with Lysol. Since when did Lysol become a bug spray? That was news to me.

We enjoyed our day trips to Dunn's River and Negril and will likely return to Jamaica again but will surely pick a different hotel!

“Wonderful service, mediocre rooms”

Of the islands I've been too (Aruba, St. Thomas), the service I received at Rose Hall was unparalleled. Though I'd gotten used to and expected the concept of "island time" to be the same for this stay as for others, the staff surprised me greatly with prompt and accurate service. This may have been a function of this being the Ritz-Carlton or the high vacancy rate (25%) but either way, I was very pleased. My boyfriend and I stayed for three nights and purchased an all-inclusive package. The dining options at the hotel were very good, though a longer stay may have been stretching the menus. I would recommend going to the White Witch restaurant for lunch, as the view is more impressive than the food. And I still have dreams about Boo Loos, a banana colada type frozen drink, that we consumed continuously on the beach. The rooms and the decor of most of this hotel were mediocre at best, I thought the bedding was actually below par in comfort. We did get a great deal on the room and the package so we weren't greatly disappointed. Despite all the good points about this hotel, I do think that it is only meant for a quiet getaway, not a long vacation. I am positive I would have been bored to tears if I had stayed for a full 6 nights.

“Overpriced and unoriginal”

Our room was quite beautiful and up to the standards that I would expect of a Ritz property. The grounds at the property are beautifully maintained which added to the overall positive feeling about the hotel.

However, in general, the food at the dining rooms on property was too expensive for the quality/quantity of the food. If you look at breakfast buffets at some other Ritz properties, for example, there would be stations providing omelets and a much wider food selection for a similar price. The quality of the pastries/baked goods was sub-par at best. The French toast, pancakes, and waffles were of poor quality. I'm sure that the Ritz should be able to find better cooking/baking staff.

Jasmine's was probably the worst value of the dining rooms. . Besides the limited quantity of each course, we were disappointed by how limited the menu was. There were very few Jamaican food selections--especially since the resort has been set up too keep guests at it (very isolated from anywhere else)

The beachfront was too small for the size of the property and the water was very dirty from the high levels of silt and very rough waters. The beach is not sheltered at all, so whenever there is a wind (which is most of the time) the water gets really churned up. There was also more guests than guest chairs, so every morning we had to get up early (by 8 a.m.) to secure a place to sit during the day. Moreover, it is not very relaxing to sit four deep on an extremely small beach.

The hotel’s charge of $25 for a one-way to Montego Bay ($50 round trip) is too expensive for a 15-minute ride. In addition, the hotel’s $17.50 per person rate for airport transfers is too expensive—especially since the ride is closer than going to Montego Bay.
