“Think twice before going!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2009

We were very disappointed with this resort. The restaurant staff was so rude, words cannot describe, very unfriendly, unhelpful. On the first night we arrived, we asked for some milk for our 18 months old daughter as we had forgotten to pick it at the local supermarket (7km away) on the way in and were told we would have to pay €12.00 for 1L....(if you think at the airport they didn't even want me to pay for it). Every day for lunch we would ask for our pasta to be served at the same time as the “antipasto” so we could feed our little one straightaway but it never happened, so she ended up eating a basket of bread before her pasta finally arrived. The waiters were always complaining about guests in front of other guests and in one occasion the Maitre said to us that “the German guests were braking his balls”... They took cocktails to a room and told them to bring glasses back to the bar. In many occasions we would try to make eye contact to draw their attention and they clearly ignored you. The highchair we asked on the first night at dinner, arrived the next day for lunch, although we could see it by the wall, not far from our table; in the end we didn’t use it as it was dirty. The chambermaid asked me to fill out a good report for her...even thought the room was not serviced properly; toiletries never replaced, the outside patio not cleaned once...
The food at the evening buffet was always cold and mainly studied for foreign guests, so you don’t get to experience the true Italian food.
The best feature is the pool, but the rest of the public areas like the gardens or the beach really let you down. There’s so much potential is this resort; it just needs proper management. As far as the sea I would not recommend the area as it’s dirty and flat, and the beach has stones instead of sand with plenty of rubbish... The playground is impossible to be used as based in an area which is too warm and the equipment (which by the way is dirty and out of date) are so hot, you cannot put your child on.
We had spent our first week in a small Resort called Villaggio Albergo Grotticelli in the “Riserva dello Zingaro” near Scoppello (Trapani) which was delightful with a great restaurant and were nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The area was amazing, we went to a different beach every day and found the row Sicily we were hoping.
As per Acacia, we will definitely not go back; the people make the place, more than the food and facilities and they definitely lack on this point.

“Never Again!!!!”

What a disappointment! We booked this hotel for the second week of our honeymoon and quite honestly it was depressing. Perhaps it's unfair for us to review this place because it compared so unfavourably to the first week of our honeymoon but here goes. Upon arrival we were impressed by the actual buildings and grounds. It really is a beautiful hotel with a fantastic pool area and nice enough bedrooms. The first indication that this hotel was not going to be great came when the porter put our cases in the room (he didn't carry them all) and then stood there with his hand out waiting for his tip - subtle! We always tip but we have never before come across someone so obviously expecting one - very rude! Sadly, he wasn't the only staff member that was rude - the majority of the waiting staff were incredibly rude. Unbelievably so in fact. This wouldn't have been a problem had the food made up for the service but I have to say that the food was vile!!! Absolutely horrific!! Never before have I sampled the delights of cold, congealed pasta dishes, bone!?(where was the actual meat?) stew and copious amounts of corned beef at a 4 star hotel. I can only guess that the people who officially rated the hotel didn't eat anything there. On the first day we made the mistake of buying lunch in the hotel. We payed an extortionate amount of money (double the prices of nice restaurants in Cefalu town) for the foulest lunch we have ever eaten. Unbelievably bad! Luckily we'd hired a car so we could drive into Cefalu (which is a 20 minute drive from the hotel and is the nearest town!) and eat there but I think it's shocking that people pay a lot of money for half board at a four star hotel and the food is so bad that they have no choice but to pay out again to eat somewhere else. (I should point out that we are not fussy eaters and will eat any old rubbish but paying four star prices for this level of rubbish really is too much)
Basically the main problem with this hotel is that it relies too much on it's appearance as a selling point. As a result, other important elements of a good hotel have been completely overlooked eg. food quality, staff friendliness and helpfulness, location etc. The pool area is only useful if the weather is good enough to use it! We had pretty bad weather and as a result of not being able to use the pool much the hotel's many inadequecies really showed. Perhaps if this hotel could be booked for a self catering holiday and it was much nearer to a town it would be worth holidaying here but as it is I would never return here. Other guests that we spoke to were equally amazed by how bad the hotel was. I'm surprised to read some good reviews of the place to be honest - perhaps we chose a spectacularly bad week!
To sum up if you're happy to pay four star prices to stay in a superficial hotel where you'll be treated badly whilst eating shockingly awful food and watching embarrasing 'entertainment' this is the place for you! It made our honeymoon memorable for all the wrong reasons! I'm sure that eventually we'll be able to look back and laugh - hopefully!

“Loved this hotel”

This hotel is only two years old and we can really recommend it and had an excellent stay there during the first two weeks of July. We have stayed in a number of hotels in Italy but, The Acacia Resort was certainly the best we have ever experienced. The staff are all excellent and very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them and they all speak some English.

The hotel is well laid out and the grounds are attractive and contain well established shrubs. There is a huge pool which was exceptionally clean and always had a lifeguard. There was plenty of entertainment at the pool and everyone was welcome to join in the aqua areobics and dance lessons.

The beach which was also very clean, and was just a few minutes walk through the grounds of the hotel and again with a lifeguard in attendance

Our room and bathroom were lovely and fitted out to a very high standard. Everthing was immaculate. The House keeping staff were very friendly and were always helpful.

We stayed on the half board basis which was excellent value. At breakfast and dinner there was always plenty of choice and something to suit everyone. Everything was buffet style and very fresh. It was mainly Italian dishes with a mixture of hot and cold food.

We met the owner of the hotel who was absolutely charming and very much a "hands on boss"

We would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel and the word "excellent" doesn't really do it justice

“Relax in Sicily!”

I Have only spent one week end in Acacia, but that was enough to refill my energies! The hotel, which is very nice and elegant on his own, is surrounded by gardens and vegetation designed very tastefully. On the back of the hotel there are those beautifull sicilian mountains and on the front the blue sea. Just to look around it gives you a great peace of mind.
Rooms are elegant, confortable and fresh, you can see that all the details have been taken care of.
During the day i was travelling around, and the strategic position of the hotel allowed me to reach places that on the map seemed too far! just as an example in less than 2 hours i made it Taormina and to the Etna....
At night I enjoyed the cuisine, in particular the sicilian night with local specialities. In general the buffet was not very varied but definately of good quality.
Even if the main customers of the hotel are family with kids, my girfriend and I were not disturbed by noises: I have noted that most of the other clients of the hotel were polite, discreet and not noisy.
Next time I come back to Sicily I already know where to go!

“Best suited to families”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2007

If you are a family with young children, have no problem with wall-to-ceiling noise for most of the day and have no interest in good food, this is the place for you. If not, our best advice is consider an alternative. We went to the Acacia for a week at the beginning of July hoping for rest, relaxation, good food and sight seeing. We came home two days early having achieved none of these.

The hotel is about 1.5 hours drive by car from Palermo airport, and probably 3 hours from Catania. The nearest town, Cefalu, is 10 miles away.

On the plus side, the hotel itself is lovely. It’s well-designed and low-rise with lots of greenery, ponds and plants. It’s only about a year old, spotlessly clean, with pleasant, well-furnished (though quite small) rooms with excellent, very efficient air conditioning that the guest can control. The rooms had balconies, a big and easy to use safe and a flat screen TV. The shower was quite good (although it was difficult to keep the water temperature constant) and there is a hair dryer. Rooms facing the sea would have a lovely view - we had a room facing the back and overlooking an adjoining building site, however this didn’t bother us too much as we don’t spend much time in the room on holiday. There was some noise from the nearby train line. The hotel pool is huge, shelving from ankle to chest deep, ideal for children. and absolutely gorgeous. There are plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. The hotel supplies beach towels – ask at reception. Most of the staff were pleasant, especially the helpful reception staff. There were hardly any Brits – the vast majority of guests were Italian, with some French and Eastern Europeans. The staff speak very little English, apart from the reception staff, who are all fluent, but this is no problem – just learn to say buon giorno, per favore and grazie!

The downside for us was that the hotel was absolutely full of families with children and really most activities and facilities were designed to cater particularly for them. These are all run with safety very much in mind. We knew it was a family hotel (which is why we went in early July but overlooked that schools break for holidays earlier in Italy), and obviously we expected there to be children playing in the pool etc and that there would be activities aimed at them. But it was impossible to have a quiet dinner or even a quiet drink in the bar as that was full of children until 11 pm when it closed. The bar carries international premium brands, but prices are expensive, €5 for a small bottle of beer, a minimum €14 for a bottle of local wine, and €6 for a small cocktail.

Music is played around the pool at high volume for most of the day from 10 am to 6 pm in competition with similar noise from the adjoining hotel. There was a break at lunchtimes where the music was toned down but it was still there all the time. This is either your cup of tea or it isn’t. There seemed to be only about three CDs, so it was the same stuff again and again. We tried escaping to the “private beach” but this is another disappointment. The beach is a small strip of sand and pebbles about 20 feet wide. A bulldozer is used (sometimes during the day) to move the pebbles to each end from time to time to give a higher proportion of sand, but any rough waves soon move these back across the beach. Hence the “private” nature of the beach is created by the piles of stones at each end. Sunbeds and umbrellas are regimentally placed nose to tail over the beach area. Again, there was some construction noise from the adjoining site.

The food was atrocious and unacceptable for a hotel of this quality - like bad school dinners except without the variety, with the exception of the puddings which were OK . The main course was a choice of pork or fish on 4 days out of 5. Green beans and saute potatoes were the only option on 3 out of the 5 days. It was always a buffet - we ate late because it was a bit quieter but this meant the food was cold and dried up, especially the pasta. Generally speaking the quality was awful – examples are:
 Tinned pineapples and peaches at breakfast (the only fresh fruit we saw at any meal were apples and pears)
 Coco pops in the muesli (this wasn’t the odd coco pop that had got in by accident – it was full of them - anyone who wanted these could easily have added them from the bowl full)
 Dry and tasteless “pizzas” which were microwaved in the poolside snack bar
 Ice creams from the poolside snack bar that looked as if someone had sat on them and then refrozen them.
In the end, we went to a supermarket to get some edible food…we weren’t the only ones.

The activities were OK for the kids but not really for adults, for example the aerobics session was more like line dancing. The young staff are enthusiastic, work very hard and give a show in the evenings – again, more of an attraction for kids than adults (they were mainly mimed dance routines to taped music from West End hits like Cats and Grease).

The next bit is not the hotel’s fault but it’s worth knowing if you want to use this hotel as a base for any sight seeing. We had a car but the distances in Sicily are huge and the roads, apart from the motorways, are so mountainous that we found it impossible to go anywhere other than to Cefalu in a reasonable day-trip. We started off one day to go
to Taormina but had to give up. I'm not quite sure how far we actually went, but we drove for 6 hours and used less than half a tank of petrol! We did see Etna from the north, which was interesting, but didn't feel inclined to do a 7 hour round trip on another day to actually get to the Etna cable car on the south side which was the trip recommended by the hotel staff.

There’s not really anywhere to go around the hotel as it’s an area that’s currently being developed as a tourist resort, with lots of building work going on around (hence the view of the building site). Cefalu is quite pleasant for a day trip, although the beach there is absolutely packed.

If you want a holiday which will have plenty for your children to do, and the chance for them to interract with those from other countries in a safe environment, then this hotel might work for you. As for us, after five days we gave up, bought our own Ryanair tickets (thanks to the reception staff for letting us use the hotel’s internet) and came home 2 days early, arriving back at Stansted with a feeling of disappointment and relief.
