I have been to Italy about six times. This was my first visit to the Palazzo Brandano. My brother stayed at the Palazzo Brandano previoulsy and gave it a great recommendation. Our stay far exceeded our high expectations. The food was fantastic, the town of Petrorio (which is tiny) was picturesque. However, the detailed and personal service we received at the hotel was exceptional.
You can only reach the Palazzo Brandano by car (maybe bus?) but it gave us the opportunity to drive through the beautiful and untouristed Tuscan countryside. Upon arrival we were shown our rooms which were fantastic (even by American standards).
Our first evening there we had dinner at the Palazzo Brandano. Given the small size of the village and that the Palazzo Brandano is more of a B & B, I expected the meal to be marginal. However, it was one of our favorite meals in Italy.
After a glass of wine or two, we requested that Joergen (the manager) assist us in planning the following day in Tuscany. Although he was more than willing to do so, he told us to finish our meal, not to rush, and that we would discuss it after dinner over wine in the sitting room area. After finishing our meal (and dessert), Joergen suggested we wait until the following day to make our plans so that we could sleep in and relax, or if we were up early we could add to our trip. That is the kind of attention to detail this place provides!
The following day Osmund (the manager) provided us with wonderful suggestions of Tuscan hill towns to visit, and made dinner reservations for us in Multipulciano (what was my favorite restaurant experience in Italy). While dining, Osmund called the restaurant and asked to speak with me, wanting to know how our day went, and wanting to make sure we were happy with the restaurant. Again, attention to detail!
After returning to the Palazzo Brandano after dinner, we drank Lemoncello (homemade by a woman in the village of Petrorio) with Osmund and chatted about life and travel in Italy for quite some time.
I have traveled all over Europe and can say that this was by far the best hotel experience I have had. The accommodations, food, and hospitality are unmatched. Only comment (unrelated to the Palazzo Brandano itself) is that if you are staying here, Petrorio did not appear on my driving map and I was not taking the autostrada so I could not follow the directions on the Palazzo Brandano web site. I found it without difficulty (even when taking side roads not referenced on the web site) but it may be more difficult for those that are not experienced in driving in Italy. Regardless, I would try to reach Petrorio by side roads since it is a spectacular drive.
I can't wait to go back, and will recommend Palazzo Brandano to anyone who is traveling to Tuscany.
