Heard nothing but raves about Skillet, and when I went, the lineup was 20 people deep and the wait was a good half hour on a weekend brunch. The hostess took down names thankfully so you could wait outside, gawk at others' plates or read the menu which is on their placemat.
Finally was sat and having made up our minds in line about food, was ready to order. Our waiter quickly came over and suggested "Bloody Marys?". I said No, I will have water, my friend as well. That was it, door was closed, he did not like that we weren't drinking. I looked around, not too many others were either. Needless to say, there was not a rush to get the water to us.
Our order was taken: fried chicken on a waffle (you can sub chicken for the pork belly) and one of "the burgers" with fries. It comes with blue cheese and their famous bacon jam. The food arrived and we dug in... I enjoyed my chicken with fennel deep fried crust, and he enjoyed his burger, but felt there was too much bacon jam. It was slathered on both sides of the bun so the pork overpowered the taste of the beef.
Anyhow, the server never came back to quality check the food and as we watched him, he barely broke a smile. He frowned the whole time, and seemed to lack energy. The only time he did smile is when he had to back pedal on a table he was rude to. One customer had asked him if items were fried in butter and his rude response was: " Everything here involves butter and grease, that's the way we do things here." He walked off and 3 of the patrons at the table rolled their eyes and wondered if their waiter had had enough sleep the night before, or not enough coffee that morning. He then came back and touched the customer on the shoulder to explain his comment, that's when his cheshire grin smile came out... but it did not charm the table. It was like witnessing a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde moment.
The waiter also referred to me as boy, baby and sir during my dining experience- perhaps the waiter's modus operandi of trying to fish for a tip, but slick n clever does not add up to good attentive and personable service. At one point, he grabbed the hot sauce off my table without even asking if I was done with it. All in all, the service is what sunk this experience. The food was tasty, the service would have been better if the server didn't look like he was up all night and then having to go serve tables. Get rid of that black cloud, he's clearly not a morning person!
