There is much to praise in this hotel. First and foremost, the staff are very friendly and helpful and all speak excellent English. The hotel is located in the centre of St Johann, which is largely a positive, although we did find it rather noisy in our room on certain nights during and after concerts in the town square - we didn't mind the noise during the concerts and these finished by 10.30, but we did object to the clearing up afterwards which went on until 2am... Our room was a very good size and we liked the fact that the toilet was separate from the bathroom. We made extensive use of the free facilities: bike hire, the local swimming pool and the sauna and infra-red cabin. The food was generally good (see below) and we welcomed the free packed lunches, afternoon tea and coffee and drinks with our evening meal. The Italian buffet evening was particularly good. The barbecue was also enjoyable.
A few negatives: 1. our room was very hot and had no air conditioning; 2. the bed was comfortable but the pillows were very soft - even though I asked for a second pillow (which, incidentally, was brought to our room almost immediately, unlike other hotels that we have stayed at in the past) my head still seemed to be at the same level as the rest of my body once it had easily sunk through these pillows! 3. the quality of the food was a little bit mixed in our opinion. The main courses at dinner were always good. The salad bar was a little unimaginative and disappointing (although perhaps I am unfairly comparing it with a large hotel that we recently stayed at). The starters were mixed: the Hungarian cabbage strudel, pumpkin and minestrone soups were excellent, but the clear soup and the Swiss sausage salad were not to our tastes. The desserts were also mixed: some nights the staff had obviously gone to great lengths to prepare a really nice dessert, other nights it was just an ice cream type dessert. The packed lunches were always excellent. At breakfast there was a good choice of food and the juice, tea and coffee were much better than one usually gets at bigger hotels. It's a shame that we couldn't have had fresh fruit salad every day as this was far nicer than the tinned version available on some days.
Most of our gripes are minor and could easily be sorted.
