“My Daughter's Wedding”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2009

My daughter's fiance proposed February 2008. April 2008, they decided to have their wedding in Hawaii. Their first choice was the Mauna Kea resort on the Big Island, because her uncle lives on the Big Island, however, "the Madam," had other plans and nearly destroyed the resort before the eruption of Pu'u O'o. So, June 2008, she changed plans and contacted the Fairmont in Wailea, Maui. My family and I were able to pay for her wedding, but could not afford the $700 a day room rates, so I contacted a friend who travels to Hawaii annually, and he gave me the URL for the Maui Sunset. Upon contacting the Maui Sunset resort, I discovered the rental of a two bedroom apartment was ten times cheaper then the Fairmont. From the brochures sent me, the amenities and extras offered convinced me to sign a reservation to hold my family a room.
We arrived May 18, 2009, following nearly 11 hours of flying and two babies who could not handle the flight from Texas to Maui, so we weren't in a very festive mood, and we got a phone call that my daughter's fiance who flew over with her, did not have a place to stay because his family was coming over on the 19th. So, following all this, we were glad to have the kitchen and washer/drier because, we ate at the apartment instead of the resteraunts, my daughter and her fiance, my son and his wife and children, all went down to relax in the hot tub after dinner.
On the 19th, my daughter and her fiance went to meet his family and go to the Fairmont to start the wedding set-up. On returning for their luggage, my new son-in law commented, after seeing where his brothers and their families were staying, and where his parent's were staying (at the Four Seasons Resort next to the Fairmont). The Maui Sunset was by far the better deal, and the "luxuries" and grounds were far more beautiful and luxurious then the brochure displayed. If his family had known what we had, they would not have used the travel websites to get their "bargains," but contacted the Maui Sunset from the website on the brochures he had given to each member of his family. The one thing Jon's family had which Maui Sunset didn't have is, daily maid service and room service. And as anyone who has travelled to Hawaii knows, resteraunts are expensive compared going to the local Safeway or Star supermarket and cooking your own meals, especially for a family with 2 and 3 year old babies. Even more expensive is going to the local "travelocity of FODOR recommended" dining, disco, lunch, or tour/sight seeing offers. Maui Sunset has a kiosk at the pool which can arrange, with a discount, these same tours, dive trips, and dining experiences.
My experience at the Maui Sunset was very good, my grandchildren, if they do remember what they did at age 2 and 3, will remember the beach and swimming pool and walking the grounds in their bare feet without getting their feet hurt by rocks, branches, or thorns. My one tip to newcomers (malahines) to the Maui Sunset, ask a lot of questions to get exactly what you want. My one regret besides too short a stay, I should have asked for a ground floor apartment so I would not be worrying about my grandchildren falling over the railing surrounding the lanais on the upper floors. We had a fifth floor apartment.

“Loved it! Thank you! We WILL be back!”

We stayed in A502 (Elmer and Denise Nelson, owners) and LOVED it. It's true, there is a difference in certain condos (some are really nice like this one, others need to be remodeled badly), so be sure to check for the one that you are staying at.

Our condo had everything we needed and was immaculate. They even had boogie boards and beach gear for us to use. Our kids loved playing on the beaches, and Elmer and Denise gave us all the inside scoop on which beaches were the best for families. We used the grills in the beautiful lawn area almost every night. The pool and hot tub were awesome. We even did some putting around the lawn with our littlest one (golf putters and holes provided!). Ours also had wireless internet, which we used all the time with our laptop.

We would definitely stay here again and will be back. We've always stayed in hotels before, but would never go back now that we have done this with a condo. Being able to wash your clothes and make meals at the condo are a must for a beach going family! Thanks, Elmer and Denise! We will be renting your beautiful condo again!

“Do you homework....and you'll have a great experience at the Maui Sunset!”

I have been reading all the reviews some glowing and some not. I have stayed here multiple times and after getting a less than desirable unit several years ago through an rental agency started doing my homework!
While renting that first time, I went in several other untis and realized that some owners keep theirs very up to date and some had not updated theirs for years. I think the out of date ones do such a disservice to the complex.,
I found out a lot of the owners rent theirs on Vacaion Rental by Owners. Check out that site. Most people have multiple pictures. (The place we just stayed in had 16 pictures) I always rent an ocean front two bedroom. It's far away from the road and has the largest lanais! The units I have rented have all been beautiful. When I have people coming with kids, I rent a ground floor unit, but normally I stay on the upper floors. The unit I have stayed in the last couple of years is b-421, It is tiled through out. Has remodeled kitchen and bathrooms. The view can't be beat! The owners have been east to deal with!
We like being in Kihei as there are some very affordable good eating options, (see my other reviews). We also like the close proximity to Long's drug store, and Star Market, both withing walking distance. The Safeway, which is a few minutes drive, is the best grocery store I have seen on Maui!
Some complain about the beach. I walk the beach daily...I use beach shoes as I like to go down and out on the rocky ancient Hawaiin fishing ponds which are just to the south of the Maui Sunset. I then go another mile or so past there.
The beach isn't the best swimming or snorkeling beach, but my husband is a windsurfer and it's great for that! We had a couple staying with us last month and he was a kitesailer. He loved the kitesailing here and said it was less crowded than where he usually goes over by the airport! It is great fun to sit on the lanai and watch the kitesailers jumping and the windsurfers zipping back and forth on the water.
WHen we have been here earlier in the spring we have enjoyed sitting on the lania and watching the whales who frequent this harbor....sometimes they are so close to shore!
When we want to go to the beach to snorkel or ride the waves we go to beaches in Wailea and Makena, which are the two towns south of Kihei. If we were to stay at condo's at those beaches it would cost us at double or more than what we pay at the Maui Sunset! (and the view are not nearly as pretty) We'd rather have the extra $$ to eat out etc!
I read some people commented on the ants.... for the first time in 10 years of staying here did encounter a couple of micro ants. You almost can't see them. I know they spay quarterly at this complex (I've been staying there when they come through) , but it didn't bother us enough to even complain.
Hope this is helpful!

Forgot to mention....our owners have high speed internet separate from the one the complex has and it has never been a problem. Apparently the complex one was down while we were there in May...I believe they were looking for a new provider as they were not satisfied with the old ones.

“Great Place, Great Price, Been Twice...”

My wife and I have been to Hawaii three times. Two of which we stayed at Maui Sunset. The condos are nothing spectacular. However, they are priced fairly, have a great view, are meticulously landscaped, in a great location near Kihei, and have a lot of activities on site. The beach is not the best for sunbathing, public beaches down the road are better.

“Help!!! This place is a rip-off.............”

i am staying here right now. between the ants that have invaded my room, the cockroach i have had to kick out, the non-existent staff during the weekend.... this place is miserable. there is nothing close, the beach is terrible (no walking) and the rooms are dated and musty smelling. i called and asked for a mop to clean my tile floors and was told to use bath mat or an old towel to wipe them down. air conditioning is marginal at best.
spend a little more and stay in a reputable place. there is no wifi to speak of; the modem service is a joke!!!!! the curtains are stained and old, the bedrooms and bathrooms are tiny.
go somewhere, anywhere else!!!!!!!!!

Aloha, We try to contact Jim's family as soon as we heard they were dissapointed with the condos, which was 4 nights into the stay. We did speak with his father in-law when they arrived and after we addressed his intial questions they seemed happy with the location and gratefull to have all three condos in the same building. Our calls to Jim's cell and the condo went unanswered.
We take housekeeping and maintenace very seriously and pride ourselves on having the best maintained condos in South Maui. Pests are a part of the tropics, they also enjoy the warm air, I assure you cockroaches and the like do not live in the condo, but instead fly in through open lanai doors. We have a top rate eco-friendly pest control system.
As a condominium resort we do not have the resources of a hotel, however there is no better way to have a 1200 sq foot oceanfront accomidations with a full kitchen for the same price.
We wish you the best in your future travels.
