I booked this motel, a Choice Hotel (National, well-known chain) at the last minute. We were traveling through Virginia after hiking and needed to stop for the night. We had been camping, so we thought, "How bad could it be?" The answer: unreal! Our first clue should have been the smell, like a mixture of kennel and smoke. Then, there was the broken bed frame leaning up against the stairwell wall as we schlepped our things up the stairs. Fine. Maybe the place was a little old. Then we opened the door. It looked like a brawl had just occurred in that room. The furniture was smashed to pieces, the bed was in pieces, torn from the wall from which it had been bolted. There were holes, I think from bullets, in the ceiling and walls. I seriously wonder who "cleaned" that room and decided it looked "good enough." Then, the icing on the cake came when my young son called out, "Mom, what's on the toilet??" I yelled for him to back away and not touch anything before turning the corner. I expected filth, but what I discovered was a steady steam of wet, black debris flowing from below the third floor toilet onto our second floor toilet. There was a huge hole where the above toilet was falling through the ceiling. We asked for a refund, but were originally told no. I called the main Choice Hotels number, and they did negotiate with the front desk. I did have to tell them that they could return my money or I would call the Board of Health and they would have to return EVERYBODY'S money once they shut the place down. Now, please keep in mind, we had just been camping for a week, so we weren't looking for anything but a roof, a toilet that wouldn't fall on our heads, and some semblance of safety. This last point was our final straw. During our dealings with the front desk, people began coming out of the woodwork. I suspect they might live there and I'm sure there were serious drugs involved. I can't swear to it, since I have no experience in this area, but I'm fairly certain it's a crack house. So we dragged our gear back down the stairs, tossed everything in the bed of the pickup, lifted my son inside and peeled away. When running our credit card through the machine to refund our money, the front clerk said the place needs a woman's touch. I told him it needs a wrecking ball! Disgusting and totally unsafe, you couldn't pay me to stay here and I never could have slept, especially with a child in the room, for fear of being killed. I said I'd rather sleep in our pickup at a rest stop on the side of the road, and that's exactly what we did. I wish I could explain how absolutely horrible this place was. There are simply no words to describe it. It needs to be shut down, but until it is, don't stay here!
PS those pictures from "the management" shown above are NOT this motel. I'm sure it's the brand, but trust me, this particular motel looks nothing like those pictures.
