YOU MUST READ THIS IF THINKING OF COMING TO GOLDEN BUDDHA
We stayed at Golden Buddha for 4 nights over New year 2012/2013 and its about time I wrote this review!
This review has to be put in the context of a family of two adults and three children aged 14, 12 and 8!
Purely by coincidence we had arranged to stay at ‘Our Jungle House’ in Khao Sok and ‘Golden Buddha’. We found out when we mentioned at ‘Jungle House’ that we were staying at ‘Golden Buddha’ next that they were founded by the same person (who still owns ‘Jungle House’). We never thought that any place could match ‘Jungle House’ after our experience there – until we got to ‘Golden Buddha’!
We arrived at the Golden Buddha resort on New Years Eve after a longtail boat crossing from a remote pier involving dropping the children off the end of the pier into the first longtail then switching mid ocean into a different longtail to finish the 1 ½ hour journey. When we got to Ko Phra Tong we rolled our trousers up and waded ashore carrying luggage above our heads to be met on the beach by an old pickup truck and all jumped in. We were taken down a sandy track through the trees to our house – Baan Dee.
We were speechless, the house was stunning, I actually thought we had been given the wrong accommodation – a large traditional open plan Thai house made from beautiful hardwood, surrounded by a covered veranda and decorated to the highest standard. We were shown round the house by Mina who invited us to the New Years party at the clubhouse – we, of course, accepted.
We arrived at the clubhouse at 7pm to be met with garlands of flowers and the evening just got better from there. Wonderful food, great impromptu entertainment from staff and guests who got up to ‘do a turn’ then we all went down to the beach to bring in the New Year with a bonfire, fireworks, Chinese lanterns and the biggest champagne fountain I’ve ever seen.
The next four days were spent chilling out, doing yoga (I never thought in a million years my 14 year old rugby mad son would be seen dead in a yoga sala – he loved it) – Elizabeth the yoga instructor was great, diving with ‘Blue Guru Dive School’ who were superb, eating great food, speaking to lovely people, playing on the beach, visiting the fantastic Surin islands, enjoying each others company and more chilling out!
I cannot fault this place, the manager, Miles couldn’t do enough and all the staff could not have been more helpful, they were also particularly good with the kids. Special mention must go to Pena who was fantastic. Oh and did I mention that the island is idyllic- miles of almost deserted pristine beaches!
Our time at ‘Our Jungle House’ and ‘Golden Buddha’ as a family was unforgettable! It was a real adventure and the most romantic (which is difficult as a family), chilled and relaxed family holiday we have ever had - we did not want to leave. It was the family trip of a lifetime!
We will definitely be back for another family adventure.
The only thing I would change for the next time is that I would bring my kilt and bagpipes so I could ‘do a turn’ to help bring in the bells!
Thank you from the McCall family
