Koonyum Retreat's best asset is it 's view over the Byron Hinteralnd. Sitting in the spa or balcony with that view would be hard to beat! There are great drives around the beautiful countryside to be had and the owners of the retreat are interesting and affable people.
However, the price a bit "up there" compared to the other places we stayed on our driving holiday. Breakfast hamper of just croissants, jam youghurt, muesli and eggs ( no bacon or tomato or toast ) was minimal and you had to ask for replenishing of supplies. The "in house" dining option way too expensive for basically a hot pot with rice. Kitchen in The Edge vIlla has no bench space to work with, and the bedroom is upstairs, while the bathroom is down..so not an ensuite. The Villa is about 15 years old and the pine kitchen shows it. None of this is bad, but if you are paying $360+..well??
My bottom line is always "would I go there again?" . If I could afford the whole house?? YEP!! but there are better value places in Byron............however.....hm... that VIEW!!

Room tip: Check out the other villas, as they are newer than the Edge.

Hi Estella,

Thank you for your review – we are glad that you enjoyed our environment and view as this is what makes Koonyum so unique and special. We appreciate your feedback and we implement changes and improvements in all areas of our service as a result of comments such as yours. We are sorry that the Edge did not suit your requirements as well as you would have liked – we would recommend the Lotus (on one level) or the Koonyum villa (with a full kitchen) for your next visit, although as you mention perhaps we will be welcoming you and your family, or a group of friends to the house in the future!

Warm Regards,
Piari Leibo

We immediately felt connected to the Retreat (we stayed in the Koonyum Villa), Piari welcomed us and made us feel at home immediately. The villa is stunning, beautiful old massive wooden posts, very comfortable beds with exquisite linen. Everywhere you stand, from the kitchen with the world's best water purifier and mod cons, to the loungeroom and bathrooms with stunning views of the valley and ranges. You can see the sea. Normally we love full beach access, but this is another experience altogether. Sitting in the hot tub on the verandah with our organic beers, with eagles, kookaburras and a magnificent view, doesn't get any better. The never ending supply of croissants and jam, yoghurt, coffee machine, teas, fresh milk and fresh mint tea were divine as we watched the sun rise each morning. I have never felt so welcome and yet it felt so private. We chose the bedroom surrounded by glass and lovely windows which made us feel that we were floating over the valley. We felt so safe and secure and yet so open to our surroundings. We will be returning as soon as we can, it is now our preferred holiday destination! Thanks Piari & Miki

Room tip: Only stayed in Koonyum Villa so not sure of the other separate suites. You feel isolated and private wherever you are though. The Koonyum Villa was great, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, but only 2 of us for 3 nights but we really enjoyed the space (most of it in the spa). We drove around the area on one of the days and saw the most amazing landscape.

We stayed in the Koonyum Villa which was a two bedroom house with a fanastic kitchen and two bathrooms. The views were just stunning both during the day and at night. The hot tub on the deck was great. A breakfast hamper was provided with lots of freah, organic goodies. Koonyum is a little out of the way, located on a dirt road but this gives it a peaceful and relaxing bush setting. Our hosts were attentive but privacy was their main concern.

I organised this trip as a surprise for my husband with the wonderful help of Piari and Kirstie. It was one of most relaxing weekends away we have had. The views were spectacular , the cabin perfect and the spa amazing. Recommend the food and the massages.

Thank Piari for making this a trip to remember, sometimes I think we just get so caught up in the hussle and bussle of everyday life you forgot to just stop and appreciate all that is around you and all that you have - this is the perfect place to remember.
