The Camp Site at Westermill is second to none. We stayed in the 3rd field by the river and it could not be bettered. Camping amongst the farm animals was really good. However, our welcome to the site was frankly unfriendly. We did not encounter any people associated with the farm, after the steely-cool reception office, for all the time we stayed excepted for the man in the campsite shop who we also found very stand-off-ish which was a real shame. It's like going to a pub with a landlord who can't be bothered with the people having a drink in his pub. They were missing a real opportunity with the shop. There is no shops for 2 miles or so and the shop did not cash in on this although the freezer full of farm meat was good and the sausages were excellent but the very limited opening hours and the extremely limited array of goods meant that we drove into Exford for provisions.
The washing up/washing facilities were excellent for a very quiet off-season stay. The block serving fields 3 and 4 has one shower for the gents and two for ladies. This is not enough for any summer weekend or August. Even when we were staying in quiet June, we had times when we queued up for showers. The week we stayed, there was no soap in the dispenser which meant that a bar of soap had to be taken up with us on every visit to the toilet which did become a family joke but it was slightly annoying.
The main facilities area near the entrance had more showers and toilets, laundry and also a freezer for ice blocks which was really handy.
Moans out the way, the red farm walk (instructions leaflet from the shop) was highly entertaining! We mucked up the start and the middle but managed to follow the last part to the letter. Beautiful countryside and a good way to take a walk around the farmland.
Exford is a sleepy Exmoor village and we loved it that way. The White Horse was brilliant. We had a few meals here which were very tasty and the beer was great. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. The Stores on the Green were also very accommodating and we got our camping supplies here on several occasions.
We recommend this site on the understanding that when it's busy, the facilities will also be busy but the landscape is so great to be in while you're queuing up.
