We booked to stay at Gurnard Pines through The Sun's £9.50 holidays offer. We are a family of 4, myself, my husband and our two daughters aged 22 months and 2.5 months.
We decided to upgrade to a larger cabin and were glad we did, as we really needed the space with having two little ones. On entering the site, it looks reasonable - not the 'council estate' we were expecting having read some of the reviews on here. Granted, some of the lodges are privately owned meaning some have been personalised to the owners' taste and some could do with a bit of a clean up on the outside, but if you're not too much of a snob, these shouldn't offend!
We were told on booking that check-in was from 4pm, but as we had arrived in Southampton early and had managed to get onto an earlier ferry crossing than we booked, we arrived at the park at around 1pm. My husband went to reception to see if our lodge was ready, and we were told it had been cleaned and they understood we had an infant with us, but were waiting for the keys to be returned, but we could use the facilities on site until the keys became available. We took our eldest daughter to play in the the kid's soft play area (which was great, except it's open to the public and we did have a couple of issues with Mums taking their kids there and sitting back and watching whilst their much older children ran riot, were quite boisterous and rough considering there was little ones playing as well). We got the keys at around 2pm, and went to explore our accommodation.
Our 'rustic lodge' was really lovely with a gorgeous view. The kitchen area was quite small, but this wasn't too much of an issue considering we were only staying for 4 nights, and ate out most lunchtimes and a couple of evenings. The bedrooms were spacious and we were provided with a cot for the baby, even though we hadn't paid the extra quoted on booking, which worked out very well as we ended up having to use the travel cot for our eldest daughter as the temptation of being in a 'big bed' was too much and she kept getting up in the night!
My only complaint was that the TV channels were very limited, and upon reading the park's brochure left in our lodge, it would appear the smaller, more basic lodges had the luxury of Freeview, but the lodges that we upgraded to did not! Considering we had 2 babies in bed by 8pm every night, it would have been nice to have more choice on the TV, although we understand that this isn't a priority to all holidaymakers. Oh, and the double bed in the master bedroom was so squeaky, everytime one of us turned over in the night, it would wake the other up, and sometimes even our baby daughter who was sleeping in the room with us!
The staff onsite were friendly and more than helpful at all times. We ate in the on-site restaurant one lunchtime, and the food was all freshly prepared and tasty, if a little expensive.
Please, please don't listen to all of the bad reviews of Gurnard Pines. We had a really lovely time and were more than impressed. We would definitely consider staying there again.
Upgrade to a 3 bedroom lodge if you need the extra room!
