“Best Camping Option in the Smokies or on the Parkway!”

We have stayed at Mile High Campground several times over the years and absolutely love it. I can't say enough about the place, it is the only place we ever consider staying when we go camping near that area of NC. The facilities are a bit limited but the showers are warm and the toilets flush and what more do you need when camping. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. The camp is kept spotlessly clean at all times. The campsites are spead out enough that you aren't right on top of your neighbors in fact in most cases the spots are shielded from each other by several tress so you cant even see your neighbors. The views from the camp sites are wonderful!!!!! (imagine waking up and stepping out of your tent to see the Blue Ridge mountains spreading out before you). And at 5,400 feet above sea level Mile High Campground enjoys cool days even in the middle of the summer.
They do close from late October to some time in April due to snow and ice.

This camp ground is a real gem of a location, far far better than anything else in the Smoky Mountain National Park or anything on the Parkway within 100 miles. Visit is once and you will be hooked!

“Unbelievable views”

This campground had the most beautiful views of any that I have stayed in. The campsites had parking at the site, and a fire ring and picnic table. The view from the fire ring at the campsite was absolutely incredible. Most of the campsites have incredible views because it is on a mountain ridge. This means that as you drive through looking at sites, the ones on the left and the ones on the right each have a different mountain view overlooking valleys. This is not a KOA type of campground, but more primitive in nature. If you are looking for a parking lot with loads of amenities, this isn't it. However, there were flush toilets and hot shower. They weren't spectacular, but they were clean and worked. However, a hot shower with these kinds of views given that the National Park campgrounds have no showers at all, makes up for it.

The gentleman that was running the park was very nice, and when we checked it out initially, it was nearing sunset. He encouraged us to stick around and join him to watch the sunset. It was spectacular and one I will never forget. I have one of the pictures that I took in my cell phone as my wallpaper, and I am really looking forward to going back.

One thing to keep in mind is that this campground is very high up. Early in the season can be pretty cold at night, so come prepared to dress warm--some light thermal underwear and heavy sweatshirts. I can imagine that it is still pretty cool in July as well, so this may be a good spot for late season campers who want to get away from the heat.

It wasn't crowded when we were there, but the caretaker said that it can fill up on the weekends. Everyone was very nice, and I asked why I wasn't able to find the campground listed anywhere when we looked initially. They said that it is a reservation campground, and they do not advertise for a reason. They want to have it available, but not overused.

This campground is, in my opinion, one of the best kept secrets in the smokies.

“Outstanding and Rare”

A tent camper for over 20 years, I've camped in most SM campgrounds and many others in mountain areas of the Southeast. This was without a doubt one of my top two favorites. I came across it by accident, as I'd planned to stay at Balsam Mountain, which I'd never visited before. I did not like Balsam Mountain campground, but by the time I got there it was almost dark. I was in a quandary. But I remembered reading about Mile High and had seen the sign on the way to BM.... So, back I went, and I am so glad I did. The people running it that weekend were in the owners' family, and they were super, the best ever. The sites were totally clean, private, quiet, and gorgeous -- almost every single one overlooked the entire Blue Ridge. Incredible. Plus, the price to camp was lower than most of the park campgrounds, and this one also has showers!

I told the manager that I wasn't going to tell anyone that I don't like about the campground. Up until now, I haven't. I don't like campers who are trashy and leave a dirty sight, who are noisy and don't respect others' desire for tranquility, who destroy the campground's natural beauty by tromping all over the place and picking plantlife and cutting trees for wood, etc. I hope everyone who reads this is a person I will like if I ever run into him/her at Mile High Campground.

A bit a ways from Cherokee (30 min) but has wonderful views. Our tent site was $14. We were at 19B and had an awesome view of mountains. Not many bathrooms, but does have a shower house.
