What a neat hotel. I've stayed at this hotel many times when I work in St. Louis. I found this hotel purely by accident. Back in the big ice storm of 2006-2007, it was the only hotel in the area that had vacancy and electricity. Now I actively seek out this hotel if I can get the rate my clients are happy with.
PROS:
The hotel is beautifully decorated. You can tell that it's an older hotel, but rather than try to mask its heritage, they actually have accentuated it.
The rooms are good size. I've stayed in 2 types of rooms: King Deluxe and Jr Suite. Both rooms were of good size. I usually travel alone, but if my wife and child were with me we could stay in that room comfortably.
The beds were nice.
There is lots of upscale shopping right across the street (Neimans for example).
They have a good gym. They also have an agreement with the gym across the street that you can use their facility for free with a guest pass. However, beware - you must pay to go to classes such as spinning or aerobics. I found this out the hard way.
The hotel room service was really good.
They have free parking. Not only do they offer outside parking, but they also offer free indoor parking in a small garage. This is essential if you're in St. Louis during the snowy season.
They have an onsite barber. He gives great cuts too.
CONS
The hotel is right off the highway. I mean literally right off the highway exit. Noise wasn't an issue for me, but getting in and out of the hotel was a challenge, especially during rush hour when the exit ramp became very crowded. It wasn't so bad in the morning when people were fresh and friendly, but in the evenings people weren't as friendly about letting you in/out of the hotel.
The Jr. Suites are in a separate building. So you have to walk outside from the main building to get to your room.....not so bad when it's nice outside, but during the harsh winter or rain storms it can be a hassle.
I'm Diamond VIP with Hilton, so I have access to the executive lounge. It's located on the 3rd floor of the main building. If I got a Jr. Suite, I had to walk quite a ways (outside too) in order to get to the lounge. A minor inconvenience.
CONCLUSION
I'd recommend this hotel. I'm a frequent traveler and have spent more nights in hotels that I usually do at home (nothing to really brag about actually). Like I said earlier, i actively seek out this hotel. In my opinion, the PROS far outweigh the CONS. It's a very comfortable and regal feeling hotel.
