“This hotel was awful.”

This hotel was awful. First, road construction makes access very difficult. I called the hotel directly to book and was not told about this. When I checked in I mentioned this and the clerk said "sorry" in a very discourteous voice. The room was clean, but had a window unit for A/C which was completely inadequate for a hot St. Louis day. Walls were thin so the conversation taking place in the next room was completely audible at midnight. I had asked for a room away from the elevator. At check-in I asked if the room was away from the elevator and was told yes, but the room was across from the elevator. When I asked for a different room I was told none were available. Luckily, we were only staying one night. This is really a glorified motel - old and creepy. Even the bar was strange and unappealing. Reviews and ratings on tripadvisor were my reason for choosing this, but we were very disappointed. The only positive feature of this hotel is it's location - near the Plaza Frontenac mall, which was lovely. But the hotel was dreadful.

  • Liked — The Plaza Frontenac mall across the street
  • Disliked — Everything about the hotel - the room and general environment.

“A Wedding to Remember”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2008

Went to a wedding at the Frontenac Hilton, its actually in the midst of a renovation from what I could tell. Its a nice hotel, the rooms are big which is nice. The staff was friendly for the most part, except the waitress at the restaurant at brunch, she was pretty crabby! Its right across the street from a grocery store and Saks and Nieman are also across the street, so is a bar called Stonehurst, I think thats what it was called, but its a very nice area.

“Nice Hotel with little downside”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2007

What a neat hotel. I've stayed at this hotel many times when I work in St. Louis. I found this hotel purely by accident. Back in the big ice storm of 2006-2007, it was the only hotel in the area that had vacancy and electricity. Now I actively seek out this hotel if I can get the rate my clients are happy with.

PROS:
The hotel is beautifully decorated. You can tell that it's an older hotel, but rather than try to mask its heritage, they actually have accentuated it.

The rooms are good size. I've stayed in 2 types of rooms: King Deluxe and Jr Suite. Both rooms were of good size. I usually travel alone, but if my wife and child were with me we could stay in that room comfortably.

The beds were nice.

There is lots of upscale shopping right across the street (Neimans for example).

They have a good gym. They also have an agreement with the gym across the street that you can use their facility for free with a guest pass. However, beware - you must pay to go to classes such as spinning or aerobics. I found this out the hard way.

The hotel room service was really good.

They have free parking. Not only do they offer outside parking, but they also offer free indoor parking in a small garage. This is essential if you're in St. Louis during the snowy season.

They have an onsite barber. He gives great cuts too.

CONS
The hotel is right off the highway. I mean literally right off the highway exit. Noise wasn't an issue for me, but getting in and out of the hotel was a challenge, especially during rush hour when the exit ramp became very crowded. It wasn't so bad in the morning when people were fresh and friendly, but in the evenings people weren't as friendly about letting you in/out of the hotel.

The Jr. Suites are in a separate building. So you have to walk outside from the main building to get to your room.....not so bad when it's nice outside, but during the harsh winter or rain storms it can be a hassle.

I'm Diamond VIP with Hilton, so I have access to the executive lounge. It's located on the 3rd floor of the main building. If I got a Jr. Suite, I had to walk quite a ways (outside too) in order to get to the lounge. A minor inconvenience.

CONCLUSION
I'd recommend this hotel. I'm a frequent traveler and have spent more nights in hotels that I usually do at home (nothing to really brag about actually). Like I said earlier, i actively seek out this hotel. In my opinion, the PROS far outweigh the CONS. It's a very comfortable and regal feeling hotel.

  • Liked — I liked the large rooms and the exquisite feel of the hotel.
  • Disliked — Having to walk outside if I had a room in the other building.

“It reminds me of an old apartment complex”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2007

The pros: Very kind staff who are extremly helpful, comfortable beds, great bath items.

The cons: It reminds me of an old apartment complex. One small window that lets in zero light. Seriously, it's like a college dorm room - only more comfy. Initially had a room by an outside entrance door. It was so loud with people coming and going.

Ask for a quiet side of the building away from any doors where people can enter/exit the building. They are heavy doors and slam loudly. We had to change rooms. Again, the staff are so wonderful. I give the front desk folks 5 stars for their help and understanding. Hotel is just so-so.

  • Liked — staff and bed
  • Disliked — just the overall feeling of the hotel. It felt old...not charming, but old. it lacked character to me.

“Business Trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2007

While in town for a Business Trip, the hotel did an excellent job managing the check in, meeting our group needs and providing all the accomodations necessary for facilitating our event. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The grounds were impeccable and the surrounding neighborhood beautiful.
