I spent 2 nights at the resort (July 15-17, 2011) with my husband as a "weekend away". Neither of us golf, but had heard so many marvelous things about "Madden's" over the years that we figured we'd head up North and enjoy the quiet time, catch some sun, have a few cocktails, and enjoy some nice dinners together.
I booked us a Wilson Bay room summer special via Madden's website. Thinking that it was the find of the century, I was sadly mistaken when we arrived. First of all, when we arrived, our room was still dirty and the Lodge had to send someone back to clean it. They weren't sure how it happened, and questioned if someone had, "possibly broken in" ... um what?
I felt a bit "taken", as the pictures on the website didn't seem as outdated as my room certainly felt. There were others who warned of the datedness on tripadvisor, but I guess I just thought maybe they were being picky. We also had a fridge that didn't work. That really bummed me out considering we'd brought a cooler with things to put in the fridge and there wasn't a spare to swap with it. We made the best of it and iced our cooler as best we could.
It made it difficult to rest with the springy screened doors that constantly slammed every time any neighbors went in and out of their rooms (think like the old camp days). We also had neighbors with large dogs that constantly barked. We talked to the Lodge about it and they said they would address with the owners, but nothing ever changed during our visit.
We tried to make it to the Lodge for brunch, but were misinformed of the hours, so we missed that. Dinner at the Madden Inn was exceptional. Ice cream at the parlor was fun. The grounds are very neatly groomed and staff is always friendly and attentive. There should be more chairs at the pool - I believe there were 5 there when we were there, making it difficult to relax unless you enjoy laying on concrete. We would have just gone to the beach, but there was an private event just next to it (wedding) and we felt intrusive.
If you're a golfer most likely a great place to visit. Small wedding destination probably as well. Very ... Dirty Dancing old resortish. Would like to see them revamp the rooms we stayed in for sure! I was sad to go home feeling like we never got the romantic weekend we went there for. :(
