When our son chose to attend a college in mid-coast Maine, we were excited about the opportunity to explore a new region. Our first visit, in the spring of 2008, brought us to the lovely little town of Belfast and the White House Inn. In the intervening years we've stayed at the White House several more times, and just last week took over the Inn with our extended family to celebrate Will's graduation. All I can say is that not only is the Inn itself gorgeous, but the hospitality we have enjoyed is unmatched. Diana and Sandy Rich are consummate hosts; breakfasts are unbelievable, and when we needed a home away from home, we were treated like family.
Details: the rooms are beautifully decorated, with luxurious linens and towels; each room has a flat-screen TV, and the inn's selection of DVDs kept grandchildren occupied on a rainy evening. It's located within walking distance of town, which is great, and the Riches are very helpful with information on local dining, etc. Breakfast is at your convenience, and you can either sit at the large dining room table or at a smaller table in one of the parlors. The overall experience is really more that of a lovely little boutique hotel than a B&B.
We will miss Belfast, the White House, and the Riches. But since our son has so far not made any indication that he's leaving Maine, future visits may in fact be in store.
