We were in town for a wedding and stayed 3 nights. Our trip started by being picked up from hotel staff in a cargo van in which we had to load our own luggage and the inside was very dirty. Once we arrived to the hotel there was only 1 working elevator which was also filthy (dirt, dents, and severely damaged wood framing). We were told the block of rooms being reserved for the wedding block had been renovated, but I cannot imagine this was done prior to the turn of the century. The bathrooms were tiny and the shower head was about neck high (and I am only 5’5”). Housekeeping seemed disinterested, and both days simply asked if we needed new towels. We would of course have to gather the used towels in exchange. There was no removal of trash or other assumed housekeeping tasks that are completed unless you request them. As you walk the building you will notice pieces of the ceiling falling off on the way to the ramp where you park. There is a pool, but it is in a room that appears was under renovation at one point, but then abandoned for years.
At the time we checked in we had requested a ride to be arranged to take us back to the airport. It was promised that either hotel staff would take us in the shuttle or a cab would be called. The night before we checked out I confirmed this and was told that the hotel would cover the cost of the cab since the shuttle service was unavailable at that early hour. The following morning for check out we asked about our ride and the man at the desk had no knowledge of the cab arrangement. We had to prompt him to then call the cab company, since this did not appear to be an obvious next step to him. We discovered that as we had come to expect, the ball was dropped and no ride had been arranged as promised. We were told they could have one there in 10 minutes. 30 minutes later one arrived and we barely made it to our flight on time. The man at the desk was extremely unprofessional and he never once apologized.
Once we arrived home I spoke with the manager “Ted” to discuss the cab arrangement, because at this point all we wanted was our $20 reimbursed for our ride. The manager’s response was “all I can do is say I’m sorry I guess.” The manager refused to reimburse us $20 and said “you could tell me it cost you $400” even though I only asked for $20 to give us some consolation for what we went through. Yes, these rooms are $59/night, and are horrible. The hotel is in horrible shape, the rooms are old and unclean, and the entire staff was unprofessional in their appearance.
I have never felt as though I had to write a formal complaint, but this experience really left me no choice. I BEG you to strongly consider other hotel options in the Sioux Falls area, many of which are really just as close to the Downtown area.
