We visited the Cliff House Hotel for a two-day break that included one dinner in the restaurant. Despite the stormy weather that kept us inside for all but a short walk, we enjoyed the break for a number of reasons.
First, the staff is extremely friendly and works together as a team. This was evident in the restaurant during breakfast and dinner when all worked to deliver great service. It was obvious that the members of staff enjoy each other’s company and the work that they do and this came across in everything they did.
Second, the food is great. Breakfasts were as good as I can remember in any hotel that we have stayed in worldwide. The full “Irish fry” is cooked from scratch rather than being kept warm in greasy containers as is so often the case. The breads were good, and it was nice to be served with some fruit and organic yoghurt to start. Dinner in the bar was tasteful. Both of us had the fish pie – a nice dish on a cold and wet evening. The only complaint that one could make is that EUR35 seems expensive for a three course meal in a bar.
Dinner in the restaurant was really good. My scallops were excellent and my steak was well cooked, if a tad lukewarm when served. However, all that went before was just a lead-in to the main act of dessert where the hazelnut soufflé was just tremendous. My wife had pheasant, which was again well cooked and very pleasant – she joined me in selecting the soufflé for dessert and enjoyed it as much as I did. The wine list was what you’d expect in a restaurant of this class but some real value lurked in the list. We enjoyed a very nice Minervois red.
Our room was well equipped. A nice balcony looked out over Ardmore Bay – it was just a pity that the howling winds kept us indoors! The bathroom was excellent – well laid out, equipped with a fine big bath and a great shower and with fluffy towels, dressing gowns, and slippers. The bed was good and it was nice that the room came equipped with a selection of books and magazines, including some books that are suitable for kids. The books aren’t tatty old volumes that have been added to check a box; they are interesting and up to date. Attention to detail is something that this hotel does well. Two other points illustrate this – free valet parking is available for residents and free newspapers are provided daily.
All in all, the Cliff House is an extremely nice boutique hotel that is managed and staffed by a great team that delivers extremely good service at a competitive price. It’s just a pity that Ireland hasn’t more hotels that deliver this combination. Recommended!
