“Foreign tourist? Ireland at its best - also - great break for parents of small kids!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2009

I'm a lazy/silent user of this site and would never normally bother to write a review... if I like a hotel.. my feedback is that I just keep going back. Cliffhouse is now most certainly in this category. My blunt feedback...

With all due respect, I look at some dissatisfied Cliffhouse reviewers and suspect they are probably the types that will find fault with anything and everything anyway! I've stayed 3 times now so I feel qualified to say that!!. Because it is relatively expensive in recession-hit Ireland (and the word is spreading that the hotel is great) it is attracting some fussy Irish clientele. Certainly heard a few of them at nearby tables in the restaurant!

I holiday at home in ireland a lot because airports are synonomous with work for me (2 toddlers also not ideal!) If you are a foreign tourist, I think this is probably the best Irish hotel around at the moment. Ardmore may be off the well-worn tourist track but it is worth the price and extra distance to travel... the village is like Ireland of the 80s - quiet and unspoilt.. one or two shops/pubs... a caravan park (!).. nice beach/great scenery.

I sense this hotel will set a new standard in smaller irish hotels. Charging €150-200 a night for a trendy room, nice pool but crap service/food is becoming a thing of the past.

The (mostly local) hotel staff bend over backwards to the point that if you are a smoker and go out to the bar terrace.. the barman runs out with a blanket for guests!

Food is geat.. breakfast in particular. Pool and Spa area is small but very relaxing with terrific views.

If you have kids and want to get away for a weekend of chillout then this is a real treat. The fact that the hotel is full most weekends in this economy tells you something. if you are a struggling Hotel owner.. send your senior managers here for a night!!

“Heaven on Earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2009

We arrived on Friday evening and were immediately struck by the friendliness of the staff, the girl who checked us in and the porter were both lovely - we were taken to our room and given a quick tour of the hotel - we just stayed in their standard room which was more than adequate and very spacious with a beautiful ensuite bathroom and separate shower stall. Everything was pristine, beautiful egyptian cotton bed linen and quality towels. We headed down to the spa more or less immediately in the robes provided. the spa is compact but beautiful, pleasant pool, sauna, steam room with outdoor jacuzzi which we availed of even in November. The food was first class, breakfast was really gorgeous with excellent choices.
Evening times we spent in the bar, the bar man there was top class, very very friendly without being in any way intrusive, a sign of a real professional - I have to say over all the staff made the weekend, they were first class with alot of locals employed which is nice to see.
A nice touch from the bar man was giving me a blanket to wrap around myself when we went out for a cigarette.
The location itself is stunning - we also went on the cliff walk - over all we were extremely inmpressed and will definitely recommend the place to others and hopefully return ourselves!

“great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2009

I stayed at the Cliff House for one night only with my partner as a short getaway break. From the moment we arrived we were given a very friendly welcome. The hotel is beautifully designed and everything from pillows to decor is of the highest of quality. I particularly liked the beautiful quality bathrobes and the great selection of books made available in the rooms. We eat in the bar that evening and had a really beautiful meal. We were both surprised at the high standard and tastiness of the meals(we had chicken and lamb) which were relatively inexpensive. The bar setting was beautiful, with a table overlooking the sea. I actually thought the bar was nicer to eat in than the restaurant.
The spa and pool area were really peaceful and beautiful. Breakfast was top notch, great quality food/freshly squeezed orange juice, good coffee.
One thing we both commented on was the staff and how friendly they were. both receptionists we spoke to were really lovely, waiting staff were very efficient and friendly, as was the smiley porter who went out of his way to show us were the spa was. different staff would have made a huge difference to this hotel.
I would love to come back here in the summer when i bet it must be beautiful with all the balconeys/views.
I am trying to think of something negative about the hotel but if i have to try to think of something then i think that about sums it up.

“Beautiful location, just something missing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2009

Visited the hotel for one night for partner's birthday. Truly beautiful location located (as the name suggests) on the cliffs overlooking the sea. Ardmore, Co. Waterford is a pretty sea-side village, quiet in the autumn but still excellent for a relaxing, laid-back night away. The hotel is lovely and rooms and views from rooms were fantastic. The seaview from the bedroom and the design of the bathroom are particualrly noteworthy - funky innovative design accompanied by equally matched funky colourful toiletries. Only reason for not giving this hotel a 5* was the staff in the restaurant /food serve - told by one member of staff when asked if we would have to wait much longer to receive our lunch (after already waiting over 30 mins) that she 'only had two hands'! Only reason that we were in a rush was because we had spa treatments booked in the Cliff and were asked not to be late. The '| only have two hands' comment was mortifying not least because I'm totally respectful of the demands of hospitality staff in this industry and would never make overly-demanding requests. Furthermore, the comment was made in full earshot of the surrounding guests who in turn looked around to see who the waitress was referring to. While perhaps of itself a throwaway comment by the waitress, it did serve to make me feel uncomfortable for the remainder of the overnight stay. As a result, we chose to travel by taxi to Dungarvan and dine at Paul Flynn's Tannery restaurant rather than risk the food service staff at the Cliff. Breakfast next morning was attended by friendly, efficient staff who served great food - only complaint was the extra charge (supplement €5.00) for having scrambled egg and smoked salmon rather than the traditional Irish breakfast. if you must, please add the five euro to the room charge rather than drawing adverse attention to it by charging supplements to guests for their breakfast. No problem to pay the supplement if it was a great cut of steak but for an egg and a few strips of bog standard smoked salmon....it's just silly. I would recommend this hotel overall as it is situated in a fab location, is beautifully designed and the spa treatments for self and partner were lovely - main aspects to be improved are the ability of staff to cope with the pressure of serving a busy bar and not resorting to cutting and underpinning comments and providing a normal breakfast in a high rated hotel without adding extra for 'breakfast supplement'. In a five star hotel like the Cliff, breakfast 'supplements' are akin to charging folks for the froth on beer, the butter on the bread or the vinegar of the chips! Just add it on in the first place if you must!

Dear anna44

Thank you for your review. I am delighted that for the most prt you enjoyed your Cliff House experience.

I noticed that the date of your stay was a year ago in September 2008. The policy of charging extra for breakfast no longer exists as we stopped doing that very soon after. There are no extra breakfast charges any more.

Having had a full year of operations and training under our belt since your last visit I can assure you that staff comments such as the one you experienced should no longer happen as we are much more in control these days.

If you come back hopefully you'll experience it for yourself.

Kind regards
