With all the new hotels built (and now empty/gone bust), it's great to see a hotel which is clearly well-established and manages to strike a balance between local custom and tourists. We were there as part of a hen party (there was at least one other hen party, two stag partys and a group of German bikers). And all of this while their 'local' business continued, including a scouting group, a talent academy and a musical evening. The staff couldn't have been nicer to us and were infinitely patient as we repeatedly mislaid our room key cards. Breakfast was very good - lovely scones as well as very promptly delivered cooked breakfasts cooked from scratch (no food lying around under heater lamps) and nice fruit too.
Ok, the rooms were grand - our first (larger) room had a problem in that it didn't lock so we were moved to a smaller room. The lighting wasn't good -no central light and some of the lamps couldn't be plugged in but again, the friendliness of the staff and the very low cost of the room meant you would overlook these kind of things.
Dinner was a little disappointing - the hotel was dealing with alot of large groups but if you are going to accept bookings then you need to have enough staff on the night. While there was butter on the table, we weren't given bread till we asked and even then, we were given bread for six persons (there were 19 at the table!). It also took quite a while to get wine. Food was grand - again, fine for the price charged.
All in all, this was perfect for what we wanted. Given the noise that filters out from the pub to certain rooms and from the footpath outside the hotel once the nightclub ends, it's definitely not a place for a romantic and quiet weekend but if you're looking for a central location, free parking, and friendly staff for your time in Navan, then this is for you.
