Beautiful grounds and comfortable rooms are nothing compared to the level of service of the staff. Every single person knew our names, food preferences and what our plans for our stay were. From organising picnic baskets to transfers to the airport, nothing was too much trouble for them.

Food onsite is fantastic, absolute quality and the location and scenery speaks for itself. A real highlight was waking up to the sight of cows grazing outside our window.

Our family of 4 stayed here for three days in December 2012. We loved the location with amazing views from all the hotel and guest rooms via large floor to ceiling windows.

Great service and we always felt well looked after. Food was always very good I would say and the packed lunch provided for our glacier tour was fine. Apart from the Perito Moreno tour including mini trek on the glacier itself (highlight of our trip) we also enjoyed zip lining and my wife and daughter went horse riding. These additions aren't cheap I suppose (zip line for 4 was USD 320 for just over 2 hours) but on the other hand we had a great time and all were well organised.

Only negative about the hotel is that it can be a bit noisy as the rooms are off a central corridor so I would choose a top floor room if we ever came back here.

We stayed here for 4 days on our honeymoon and it was fantastic. The views are spectacular, the area is pristine, and there are even cows that wander around the hotel grounds. The hotel is truly 5 star and the food is excellent. We took one day to see the glacier, but were fully content to spend the rest of our time enjoying all that the hotel had to offer. Alejandro at Breaking Trails did a wonderful job in recommending it!

When you stay in Relais & Chateau hotel you expect (as their website states) - a standard of excellence encompassing all of the things you'd expect from a luxury hotel. At EOLO, the only one you get is the price. I have stayed in at least 70 of the Relais & Chateau hotels across the world and this is by far the worst. At half the price and non-R&C - it would have got, perhaps, an "average" rating. At this price and as a member of R&C; no way!

EOLO is set in open countryside - about 6km from the road, surrounded on 3 sides by mountains (some in the far distance) and on the 4th side by a distant lake. The setting is peaceful and calm if not the best scenery in the area. All the rooms have a view of at least one of the outlooks.
The rooms are very large and comfortable; well heated and with a smallish opening window (no aircon) and a large viewing picture window. (But beware, people can walk past your window!!) Bathrooms are OK with over-bath shower(difficult to adjust) and with the normal range of R&C L'Occitane goodies. Pillows are not very comfortable. Our room was called the Fox and was decorated with a couple of sepia fox photos but little more. I suspect that the room named "Skunk" had skunk pictures! The rooms and the entire hotel lack design, warmth or charming touches. No flowers, interesting bits, colour or "feminine" influences. All very stark and brown and masculine. The dining room is over-formal; unfriendly and austere. - Definitely not the place for a fun night! The bar is similar - But with a nice view from the ceiling to floor windows.
There is little to do on the site apart from swim in the very small pool or walk in the countryside. Everything else is to be paid for and is not cheap. To pick up an excursion you have to be taken to the main road - a round trip is charged at USD25 - which works out at USD3.20 per mile. (NYC cabs charge considerably less). Excursions were excellent - am not sure whether the hotel charged a commission but would not be surprised if they did! Other charges were high - eg Laundry - a shirt at USD9 is, again, outrageous especially in a town of 20,000 in the middle of nowhere in Patagonia! Wine pricing seemed predatory with mark ups on local prices of what seemed to be 4-7 times and even 4 on prices in NYC. Beware that when you book things, prices are never mentioned! You need to ask...

Service was adequate but slow and rather amateurish. Breakfast was a problem if more than 2 tables appeared at a time (a regular occurrence as tours leave at set times). The team of (mainly young ladies) all spoke excellent English and were helpful and friendly but lacked professionalism and, I suspect, training/experience.

Food ranged from awful to adequate. The first night (out of three) everything seemed to have been prepared hours in advance and was reheated... overcooked, tasteless, inedible... I have had better food in roadside eateries. Dinner on night two was a no-choice BBQ (asador) of lamb which was OK if you liked lamb for starter and main meal. Night three was the best with some quite nice food and choices. (Was the chef having a couple of days off?). Picnics provided for the day trips were awful - prepared the night before and refrigerated with hard rolls; limp salads, soggy, pasty empanadas - they are a disgrace. (I noted that people form other, much cheaper hotels had far superior packed lunches). Breakfast was OK but often the fruit was as hard as nails and unripe (don't chefs taste stuff anymore?). Overall awful.

I can't see the point of staying here. El Calafate - 16km away - offers loads of cheaper hotels - and, since most of the people who go to this region go on 2 or 3 all days trips, the only use for the hotel is sleeping and breakfast. There are plenty of alternative eateries in town which are too far away from EOLO.

So, OK hotel. Nice location. Charmless interior. Amateur service. Awful food. Predatory pricing.

Give it a miss.

If the manager of EOLO would like to contact me, I will give him more details of the food debacle!

Room tip: They all have decent views. Avoid the most expensive unless you want to spend all day in the room!

Located outside El calafate and a convenient drive from the airport, Eolo is sited halfway up a hill with just incredible views from every picture windows from the rooms and from the public area. While we did some trekking to see the glaciers - Perito Moreno and Upsala, the lodge itself is an unforgettable experience. The staff welcomes you by name, and every need is met with genuine interest and a smile. There are no bills to sign for in every transaction because they know who you are and everything is accurate by check-out. Just bring along your camera everywhere you go in the lodge because the play of light left no scenery the same from moment to moment. Words defy the marvelous play of light on sunrise and sunset. The cattle and horses roam free and they seem happier than their brethren we saw elsewhere in Patagonia. Yes, this place is very expensive but should get high on your bucket list to visit before long!

Room tip: Every room we understand has magnificent views
