“Manyatta: Food lets the place down otherwise it would be heavenly!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 April 2010

This review is for Manyatta as there is no separate entry (it is managed by Voi Wildlife).

Very luxurious tents with a gorgeous patio to relax in with your own swimming pool. There are around 26 tents (either mountain view or river view). The animals (mainly elephants, waterbuck and apparently a lion) walk right up to your patio whilst you are swimming in the pool. Out of this world feeling! Meals are served in a very light and airy open restaurant, but unfortunately, for this level of luxury one would expect much better food. From what I gather, the food comes in from Voi Wildlife Lodge and really it is substandard. If I were eating in a 2 star hotel, I would not be surprised. They were constantly out of coffee, milk and hot water. Management should take note and improve the food quality if they want to turn this place into a destination lodge; unfortunately due to the lack of any decent lodges in Tsavo East, I think that the management has become complacent. I would only return here as the location is amazing. However, don't expect great food. Additionally, this was the only place where we had huge problems with bugs and lizards in the tent. Staff were helpful in trying to rid our tent of these creatures.

“Poor service let's then down.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2010

Manyatta camp is a new addition to Voi Safari Lodge. It is located just outside the Voi Gate of Tsavo East and therefore serves as a good starting point for a safari into the park. The Camp is built on the very edge of the park overlooking the Voi river. The camp itself has appealing buildings and each tent has its own swimming pool (along with a communal one).

What really lets this camp down is the poor service from the reception and managerial staff. The waiters and barmen are friendly, but the other staff are indifferent and make zero effort to resolve problems. Fortunately we only stayed one evening as our shower wasn't working. We reported the problem 3 times, but no-one made an effort to get to the bottom of the problem.

The food was very average, with buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Overall this is an average camp, at an average price, but the lack of service makes it a place to avoid in favour of the many other lodges in and around Voi with similar prices.

“Great first night.”

We stayed at the lodge for our first night of a 3 night safari (staying in one of the rooms, not a tent). The rooms were clean and the food was good. The only downside was the drinks were a bit overpriced compared with the other lodges we stayed at (250 ksh here for a glass of lemonade).

The pool is clean and very welcome after the dust of Tsavo East.

There is a great veiwing platform for the watering hole, however at night there were so many insects the floor became a bit crunchy!!! :-)

Any questions please ask

“Good value,basic but clean”

We stayed for one night on safari to Tsavo East and were impressed with the rooms, large with two kingsize beds in each room. It was very hot overnight but think this is the case in all lodges, especially when we were used to the airconditioning at the Voyager. The bathroom was clean and serviceable. The public areas were comfortable. The food was average at best as was the service but that is not what you go there for. There was a lovely swimming pool and nice area in the shade for snoozing for an hour or so. We did some fantastic game drives from the lodge and it is close to the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage which we visited in the evening...something we will never forget.

“Voi wildlife lodge - spirits extortionate prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2010

I stayed overnight at the Voi whilst on a Tsavo East 2 day safari. There were 5 of us and after a long day we decided to have a drink at the bar. We ordered 5 large drinks; a mixture Bacardi, Vodka and Gin plus a mixture. The cost was £45 for the round..! e.g. £9 per drink.

Comparing it to the UK it was probably double the cost and 4 times the cost of the same drinks at our normal hotel.

I discussed the prices with the hotel manager who was unable to help.

I recommend to all spirit drinkers that you DO NOT buy and spirit drinks from this place unless you are wiling to pay the extortionate prices.

Having said that, apart from the prices, it was a great place.
