“Great Location, Great Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2010

If you're looking for another cookie-cutter type of hotel in Birmingham, this hotel isn't for you. If you're looking for a unique hotel that is grand, has class, has a good location south of Downtown, then you found it in the Wynfrey hotel.

This is a big hotel with lots of glass, brass, and marble. It is grand in every sense of the word. It can seem a little dated when comparing to newer hotels, but I didn't mind that. I was interested in the location for the business I had nearby. It has easy access to I-459 and I-65, as well as US31 Montgomery Highway, so for me it was easy to find.

Inside, the sleeping rooms are large and they have, in my opinion, the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept in. And I mean better than the big brand hotels too. Other comforts included the concierge club on the top 2 floors. I paid a little extra for the upgrade, but it included breakfast and evening hors doeveres. The Concierge who works there in the morning is super friendly and attentive. There is also a Shula's steakhouse in the hotel, which is second to none for service and food. Room service was also good, and I think some of the same items on the Shulas menu was available from room service. Every employee I walked past was friendly and said hello or something, which was impressive. That's not always the case in some hotels.

I did have to pay for parking and internet access.

If you like to shop or just walk around malls, this hotel is connected to the Riverchase Galleria mall.

The best part of this hotel was the lobby. Upon arrival bed linens were found to be "not changed" because someones "personal" effects were left on the bed sheets. We requested the bed linens to be changed. We left the room to go to the mall and shop, but being a nurse I was leary enough to "mark" the sheets in a discreet place to assure that the sheets had actually been changed since we were leaving the room. The air was not working in this room either. When we returned the room was nicely "cleaned" with fresh bed linens we assumed. To my surprise when I checked the sheets for my markings they were still there making it obvious that only the "problem" had been removed and the beds straightened not changed. This was reported to the front desk and we were given another room with a minimal rate discount for this very unacceptable customer service. Once in the new room I received a call from the lady in houskeeping and was told very rudely that "She could guarantee that these sheets were changed". Obviously she had been reprimanded and also was unaware that I had the marked sheets and did know that they had not been changed. The sheets in turn were taken to the front desk and the situation was discussed with no resolution, apology or room rate adjustment. 2nd night was ok, but 1st night tarnished their image with me. Beds were small, charged for parking, charged for internet usage (who does that anymore), no continental breakfast, decor outdated. For the price of a night here I could have, and will from now on, stay at the Hampton for two nights with free parking, free internet, free continental breakfast and great customer service. The mall is really their only boasting feature and I would rather drive a little way to the mall than pay an outrageous rate for substandard experience here.

“First rate experience at The Wynfrey.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2009

My recent three night stay at The Wynfrey was absolutely first rate. I had not visited this hotel in a few years, and found the service and amenities to be better than ever. I was met at the airport by a member of the concierge team, who was my go-to person for the length of my stay. Every staff member I encountered was beautifully mannered and knowledgeable. My room was on the club level; it was spacious and clean, and I enjoyed the complimentary breakfast each morning. The convenience of having the Riverchase Galleria adjacent to the hotel made Christmas shopping so easy, and when I did need to leave the neighborhood, the staff was happy to provide a ride. The Wynfrey Hotel is very aptly described as "where Southern Hospitality meets European Elegance."

“Overrated and tried”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2009

This property has had its day - and its day is over. The rooms are quite worn, the bathroom grout is badly stained and mildewed in the shower/bath. The tub was very slick and when I called for a rubber safety mat, it never came and I was told on a follow up call that the hotel did not have any. The hotel lives off its meeting business and those who live far away who come to shop at the attached shopping center.

“Continuing to decline”

I reviewed this hotel back in Dec 2006 and most of what I said then still applies. My main reason for staying here this time was to attend a conference being held in the hotel. When I arrived in my room I found the toilet seat completely broken in half. It was obvious from the doorway. That should have been caught by housekeeping and fixed before another guest got there. Maintenance was quick to respond and replace it. They still do not have wireless in the building but this time I did get my travel router to work. However they also still charge $10/day for their internet service. Very few hotels are still charging for internet services these days. There used to be a regular restaurant here where you could get breakfast and other meals for a more reasonable price. That's now closed. Your option for breakfast now is Shula's and it is overpriced. Not sure if anything in the mall is open early for the breakfast crowd (eating prior to 8 am). They nickel and dime you to death (parking, etc). There is plenty of free parking around the mall, but I wouldn't want to park my car overnight here in an area without security. Wallpaper in my room is peeling as well. Beds are great! If I weren't planning to do some serious shopping while I was here, I'd probably would have stayed somewhere else.
