My friend and I (both 34yo females) paid in advance for 3 nights at the Homestyle Hotel. We arrived at 4pm and found the front security gate locked so pressed the buzzer. No response. We waited a minute, then pressed again (a bit harder and longer this time). We waited a few more minutes and discussed that it was fortunate to arrive during the day because, although within walking distance of everything, Homestyle hotel's backstreet location is not a place where we would be comfortable to spend time after dark while unable to get inside.
Above the entry buzzer was a phone number to call if no one responded to the buzzer. My friend called it and the person who answered was surprised that we had had no response and said we would be let in shortly. We were then let in by a disheveled young man who grunted for us to come in and then walked off down the hall. We followed him to the reception area and he looked at us and said "why did you have to call my boss?" He seemed quite cranky that we had woken him up and was rude and unprofessional and half grunted instructions at us in between yawns. He asked for a RM30 key deposit and then walked away up some stairs. We took that to mean that he was showing us to our room so we collected up all our luggage and followed him.
The room was clean but small but we expected that in this price range. We did not expect the bathroom!!! The "bathroom" was down the hall past a common TV/living area and appeared to be a toilet cubicle that someone had just installed a shower head in. If you were to shower here, the toilet and toilet paper would get saturated because they are under the shower head. We thought that one of us would have to wait outside the cubicle with a towel for the other, then pass it in when they had showered so they could at least be wearing a towel when they ran past the common area to our room. I could not work out how you could possibly get dressed in there after you showered so as to avoid being semi-naked in the common area.
We did not feel comfortable staying at Homestyle so arranged alternative accommodation and then went downstairs to return our key and get our key deposit back (and maybe a portion of what we had paid in advance for 3 nights). There was no one at reception. We called out "HELLO!!" about 15 times and no one answered. Our calls got louder and louder as we began to laugh at our situation. We did not see anyone else in the hotel to talk to (staff or customers) so we put the room key on the reception desk, kissed our key deposit and any refund goodbye and left.
As we walked off down the street loaded up like pack horses, I heard my name and turned around. Across the street was the guy we had woken up 20 minutes earlier, eating in a restaurant. He called out "Bye" and waved to us as we shook our heads, laughing, and walked down the road to some better accommodation.
