“Could be better. Good value.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

This is a good value hotel. No doubt about it.
I stayed at both the Shangri La and this Hyatt.
What you get at the SL is the resort convenience: walk to the beach, a nice pool ( but by far not an above average one, just good enough ), the grounds of a resort for walks, etc.
At the Hyatt, you are in the middle of town. Kota is a charming city, about 500k people so not a village.
The pluses is that you can escape the high pricing at this hotel: plenty of restaurants, convenient stores, laundry places, etc
The room is of high quality, seemingly recently renovated with all the amenities and comfort you would find at other Hyatt locations.
The gym is below average. No view. Small and crowded with machines. No fruits. No Juices. Just a water dispenser with paper cones to help yourself. The machines are fine, still in good shape. I have seen worse. You will spend an hour on the treadmill facing an ugly street. Getting to the gym is quite a labyrinth.
Did not try the on site restaurants. Way too many choices outside to overpay. This is the Ramadan month so there were specials for breaking the fast.
Laundry was a 2-minute walk and by the kilo. Awesome. Cheap.
Cabs right outside. You have to negotiate every single ride at Kota. Cab drivers tend to be loan sharks. Do not expect them to be honest. They simply refuse to use the meter. Hotel rates are usually twice the rate you can negotiate. Rip off.

Some remarks very specific to this location:

1. As the highest Hyatt frequent visitor, I felt absolutely no preferential treatment. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not a letter of welcome. Not a bottle of water. I got free internet access. This is a service otherwise free at many hotels but not at the Hyatt. They charge 54 RM per night, a major rip off. It is not a 50 MB line either. No upgrade of any kind. I got a view on a parking lot, away from the ocean view. So if you are an elite Hyatt member, do not expect ANY sort of a bonus at this location. They could not care less whether you stayed with Hyatt 100 nights a year or once a decade.

2. This is a not one-week long location. Try a resort for beach activities. You can of course do it all going out and fetching different sea activity services. Not convenient but $ worth it given how cheaper this place is vs. resorts.

3. No turn down service. They just knocked ( I am still in the hotel ) at 9:10 PM to ask if we needed towels, etc. Odd to do it this late. The Do not disturb has not been on for hours.

“Great hotel! Amazing rooms! Fantastic service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2010

I have to admit I saw some recent reviews and wondered whether to change my booking before I went but we had an amazing stay here and would recommend! We had an interconnecting room, quality of room and furnishings great! Pool was lovely. Breakfast buffet extensive and lovely, equally the evening buffet was lavish too! Pizzeria went down well with us all too! Staff polite and helpful. Couldn't really come up with anything to criticise about this hotel! Location great- try get to the street market on a Sunday just a few streets away- interesting experience!

“Quality Hotel in a wonderful city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2010

Stayed at the Hyatt for 4 nights at the end of July and would definitely stay there again.

I booked two seaview rooms, with balconies, via their website a couple of months before our trip to Borneo. Upon our arrival we were shown to our newly renovated rooms on the 11th floor, which were absolutely beautiful, but no balcony. Being an outdoor person who lives in a rural area, the idea of staying in a room with no fresh for 5 days really wasn't the preferred option. After discussions with the porter and reception we we advised there was one room available immediately and the second would be available within a few hours, they were on the 3rd floor.. We were invited to view the room before making a final decision. The rooms had not been renovated, but the room was perfectly presentable, clean, there was no mould on the walls or dirty marks on the carpets and the balcony was great! The staff at reception handle our problem with true professionalism.

On the first night there was quite a bit of noise, I suspect there was a function downstairs, but it didn't keep me awake for long. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in at a hotel, just devine.

We didn't eat at the hotel as breakfast was not included, and the cost per person was ridiculous. We ate a various places, across the road (sorry can't remember the name), and down on the waterfront (10 minute leisurely walk) where there are several restaurants. Lots of variety, good food and reasonable prices.

I liked the location of the Hyatt, great shopping next door in Merdeka Plaza, mini mart around the corner, just down from the laundry,a selection of bar/restaurants across the road, 10 minute walk to the waterfront bars/restaurants, if you don't stop at one of the several shopping centre's on the way, Jesselton wharf is also a 10 minute leisurely walk.

The beautiful pool at the Hyatt is also something that sets in apart from other hotels in the vicinity.

I would love to visit KK again and the Hyatt would be my first choice for accommodation

“Perfect service, beautiful interior decoration, good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

During our honeymoon in Sabah, my wife and I had two nights in this marvelous hotel between two nature/adventure tours. All staff members were extremely friendly and willing to assist.
The front desk team offered us a room upgrade, so we ended up in a beautifully furnished Club room with a terrific view on Pulau Gaya. Breakfast and the meals in general were delicious and room and other services worked in a perfect manner and the staff members did their job with a friendly smile on their face.
For any future stay in Kota Kinabalu, I would definitely book this hotel!

“Renovation Completed To Several Floor.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2010

Good hotel to stay in Kota Kinabalu. Renovation was completed to several floor when i came.
Local night market is just walking distance to hang out.
To get the freshest seafood is not a problem and you will not get lost. But believe me it's wasn't cheap.
The Olympus if i get the right name is famous to its PLU.
Pub and bar just across the street.
