I stayed in Hotel Excellency for 2 nights from 22nd January 2012, being recommended by Lonely Planet. It is a two star hotel with modern bathroom facilities at a very reasonable budget. I had to pay 1300 Rs. for a nice clean big and bright AC room, though AC was not needed at that time. The non AC rooms are around 936 Rs. for a single person and 1000 Rs. for two people. Buffet breakfast is available at 90 Rs. and you get several options include bread, parathaa, idli, sambar, dosa, upma, grape juice, tea, coffee etc.
Conveniently located in the main town Ernakulam, near Jos junction on MG road where all the shopping malls are. The hotel is very close to the railway station, south junction that is, and 3 kilometer from north town station (around 50 Rs. by auto). I highly recommend this hotel if you are on a business trip.
If you are a tourist and planning to stay in Kochin for some time, I would recommend to stay somewhere in Fort Cochin. Most of the tourists prefer to stay in Fort Cochin as it is quiet and nice. Ernakulam town and Fort Cochin is well connected with each other by ferries in every 20 minutes. The ferry costs 3 Rs. only and takes 15 minutes. If you are staying in Fort Cochin and want to come to Ernakulam, you can take a ferry from the jetty, get off at Ernakulam main boat jetty, from there you can either walk of about 20 minutes to reach MG road, or you can take an auto for 20 Rs. The ferry operates till 9:50 pm on weekdays; I am not sure about the time of weekends. Alternatively, if you have many luggages with you and don’t want to take the ferry, you can hire an auto from fort Cochin to Ernakulum (where the train stations and airport are) which will cost you 150 to 220 Rs. depending on the time and the day.
Rooms on the 1st floor facing main road could be bit noisy during the day.
