“GREAT HOTEL FOR COST AND SERVICE”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2010

This hotel is what i call the top of the hotels but you get a clean room pleasant staff lovely food services and you could fault the hotel. I did find my bed a bit hard but thats normal i tend to like a posture bed than harder. The staff will go out off there way to make your stay the best its just down the street from bugis street so fab shopping. The big shopping centres in orchard room are in walking distance so i found this to be a lovely hotel for the costs.

“Good value, good location”

This hotel is now called the Grand Pacific Hotel.

I booked this hotel as part of a 1 night Singapore Airlines stopover deal. I originally paid $AUD232 for a triple room. Singapore Airlines then had a $1 / night stopover deal, so I was able to cancel my original booking and re-book (all online) for $AUD3 including hotel and all the stopover vouchers.

The hotel is very well located. It only took us about 30 minutes to walk slowly down through the City Hall area to Raffles Landing Place on the river. There are many conveniences near the hotel, including a 7-11 right next door open 24 hours for all your essentials (making for a cheap snack or breakfast option too).

Even though we arrived at the hotel after 2:00pm, our room wasn't ready and the reception staff were not very useful in letting us know how long it would be for the room to be ready - they just told us to take a seat. After 30 minutes of now news, we left out bags to start exploring the city as we only had 24 hours in Singapore. Other than this small disappointment, our room was OK - not flash, bit dated, tight squeeze for a triple but remember this was only a stopover, even at the normal price I understand this is good value for Singapore and the location was good.

We were leaving at 5pm the following day. The hotel kindly held our bags and allowed us to shower and change in the pool shower (with use of the pool towels). No need for late checkout especially given we were out for most of the day.

I think this hotel still represents pretty good value and a good choice for a stopover.

“Busy Location”

A very practical and economical hotel in expensive Singapore. Located right at the city centre it’s easily accessible by taxi, train and bus services. Staff are friendly. Food is above average. Rooms are very decent and clean.

It’s the perfect hotel if you want to visit Singapore for business or site seeing as a group.

“A miserable, yet clean hotel.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2010

Stayed at Allson -through Singapore Airlines Stopover deal, on return leg of Europe flight in November. Originally I had booked the room as a single traveller. We ended up being charged and extra S$70 for my husband to stay! This was handled very badly by rude, disinterested and cranky front of house staff.
The room was large and clean but decorated by someone in the 1970s and not updated since. The bathroom was spacious and very clean - but the shower recess was severely damaged and a botch job had been done to cover it up. Strange padlocked cupboard in the bathroom too. Hard to get taxi from this hotel.
We will not bother again. They were miserable.

“Excellent value in Singapore!”

Purchased a great accommodation deal thru SIA Holidays and chose the Allson Hotel as it was the cheapest 3-star option and the TA reviews generally gave it a decent score. The deal included airport transfers and a half-day city tour and one nights free accommodation. When I arrived at the hotel, the concierge on the 1st floor (Ground floor for Oz travellers) offered to hold my luggage whilst I checked-in at reception which was up the escalator on the 2nd floor (1st floor). The receptionist was quite indifferent, unforunately. She hardly looked at me and I had difficulty understanding her English (probably my fault there). So I refrained from asking her too many questions. However, the process was quick and efficient.

I discovered that I was upgraded to a Premier room as there weren`t any smoking rooms available for my 5 day stay. As mentioned in previous reviews, the smoking floor hallway had a strong residual aroma of smoke, but surprisingly not in the room. The room was on the 8th floor and had a view to the south where I could see a quarter of the Flyer thru the vista of skyscrapers. It was well appointed, functional and very clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. The room-controlled air-con provided a wonderful refuge from the oppressive heat that Singapore can provide. The hotel pool was also a welcome relief. Accessed from the 5th floor corridor, you take the outside stairs down to level 4. It`s mostly exposed to the sun but there are areas of shade and blue pool towels are available for guests.

Daytours from Allson may mean a pickup from outside the adjoining hotel at the rear - Hotel Royal @ Queens. It backs on to the Allson and is on Queen St. Access is thru the sliding doors on the reception level past the tour desk. This also makes it convenient if you`re going to visit places north of Victoria St. There is an evening bar on this level as well.

As a guest, I was able to enjoy the breakfast buffet at half-price (SGD18) in the hotel`s Café Fontainebleau which also operates buffets for lunch and dinner - plus set menus. The staff there are very welcoming and attentive. The food was varied and plentiful. Western and Asian palates are catered for, but the quality I`d say was only average. There is another, more formal and upmarket, restaurant attached to the hotel as well.

My accommodation deal afforded me the slightly later checkout time of midday. It also provided the option of an even later checkout (up to 4pm) subject to Allson`s availablilty. As I was not departing for the airport until 6pm, I requested this option the day before and reception graciously allowed me a 3pm checkout. The TV even counted down before switching off 25 mins before checkout time. It certainly gave me a hurry on. They have a luggage holding system and they also advised that there were shower facilities available for checked-out guests before their departure from the hotel.

As I was fortunate to receive an upgrade from my booked Deluxe room, a lot of my expectations were often surpassed in that capacity. But the general service, facilities and features of the hotel were excellent. Its location is practically perfect. So when you look at all the Allson has to offer, it is extremely good value. I`d certainly stay there again and would definitely recommend it to others… even without a special deal.
