After arriving in Hanoi for the first time and being completely scammed by the cab driver at the airport (never get the blue and white taxis from the airport, they will rip you off and drive like nutters. We paid $30 and it should only be around $15. Ask them if the fare includes the toll booth payment too), we were warmly welcomed by the young hotel manager at Astoria. He was proactive to make sure we had a nice time there and that we had all we need. He gave credible advice about where to eat and can arrange transport or tours. We got help organising our trip to Halong bay. This was $72 per person for two days and one night on a lovely boat. This is a decent rate for what we were provided, yet perhaps ensure to get him to write down the details in full (including the name of the tour group you travel there and back with). We say this because we found it was quite badly organised once we arrived at and returned to the port with regards to who we were travelling with. We even suspect we may have been accidentally put on the more luxurious boat than the sum we paid! The tour operator said we should have paid around $95 instead of our $75. Of course we didn’t complain here.
Anyway the Astoria hotel double room was decent enough with free wifi, although the bathroom was a bit grubby (maybe bring your own towel). However it was liveable and reasonable for $20 a night. The breakfast was simple and included in the $20 a night price (baguette bread with butter and jam, eggs and a tea or coffee). So in summary the Astoria should be a safe bet for a couple of nights in Hanoi.
